hi all,

My alife has increasingly become more vocal. Last night he kept me awake my meiowing all the time (the type of meiow cats do when they are trapped somewhere) he wasnt of course and i checkd on him a few times but he continued to carry on...

Do others cats do this? is it a phase?

He also brought me a plastic bag in last night?! and then the meiowing started.....?

It could possibly be attention seeking behaviour, one if my cats sometimes does this when we go to bed, she can get upstairs but she sits at the bottom and gives out a pitiful noise like she is in pain. When I shout her up, she stops and jumps on the bed purring like mad.

My cat does this if she brings wildlife in, or if she encounters live wildlife she brought in last time. Why the heck she catches mice, brings them in, and then lets them loose to chase them all over again at night is a mystery... But I think the noise is her way of saying "Hey, are you there, look what I found", and the fact that it's 2am doesn't even occur to her. I just set the cat flap to out-only overnight now.

My elderly cat does this he's 18 at first I thought he was in pain,
but he stops if I shout his name so I think he just likes to know some one is there
He does it at all times but mostly at night if he wakes up.

it could just be something as simple as the syndrome that pretty much every cat I have ever known has suffered from.

it's called "No-Matter-Which-Side-Of-the-Door-Your-Cat-Is-On-It's-Always-The-WRONG-Side!"

lol lol

On a more serious note, it could be that the cats got a scent of a female that's in season, and wants to get to her... could be he just wants attention... a cuddle... he might even have decided that he simply wants feeding... NOW!?!

Are you absolutely certain your cat is a he? Female cats do become more vocal and 'call' when in season. Sorry if it seems a silly question but my sister had a cat she thought was a she but turned out to be a he and she didn't find out until the cat was about 13 months old.

If your cat is a he, then the big question is whether he's been neutered, because my opinion is that he's probably playing or fetching you presents to get some attention, but possibly, just possibly, he's heard or smelled one of the females above who is in season. Toms can smell a queen in season for a mile or more and become very vocal in calling to them, as vocal as the queens are in calling to them.

I think Medusa has probably hit the nail on the head, either that or he is simply feeling lonely and calling for you, every now and then my cats do that too a really sharp loud miow that is repeated over and over, almost sounds like they are crying awww :)

Some cats are also naturally very vocal beasties and this tends to get very much louder when they hit puberty and become adults.

With most cats like this there's nothing at all wrong, but they just don't shut up. I was convinced for a while that my lad Arthur was in pain, because his miaows sound so much like distress calls. It's his normal talking voice though, and he needs conversations with his humans (and the dog). Some of my friends have a cat who is similar- her name's Chaos, but she's known as Gob, because the only time she shuts up is when she's asleep. Chirrups, meeps, briaows- she can even mutter under her breath whilst eating.

Deaf cats are also incredibly loud vocally sometimes, partly because they can't tell how loud they're being so they just shout until someone pays them attention. Elderly cats often have failing hearing and so they can't help being loud.

My cat has a glove she loves... when she finds it later on at night she meiows and meiows. We call her and give her attention, we play fetch with the glove then she proceeds to chew stuff, usually my teddies. Sounds similar to the plastic bag! Try throwing it, maybe he'll play fetch like princess! :hihi:

If he's got food and water, a clean litter tray and isn't desperately cold, wet or ill, and he's not calling to queens, then it's probably a bit of 'damnit! nobody's playing with me!'.

If he's going through a phase of playing in the bedroom at night then you either need to shut him somewhere else or get some decent sleeping pills ;)

I, like alot of you im sure have made a rod for my own back.

I cant shut the bedroom door anymore as they try to burrow underneath and bring the carpet up outside the door!:roll:
That and running from the bathroom and headbutting it in the hope that it will open! :suspect::hihi::hihi:

So there's not much i can do....he hasn't done it since, i'll just put it down to him being a pain in the bum!! :)

Yeah- the solution to that is shutting them into another room rather than out of the bedroom.

Either that or getting so used to them jumping up and down on you that you sleep through whatever they do.
