View Full Version : Cheap internet, any ideas?
lyndsayx 25-01-2008, 15:53 I'm moving house shortly and don't want to renew my Virgin subscription when it expires (for many reasons!), and will possibly just get a freeview box for the TV.
Does anyone have any cheap recomendations for a decent broadband connection? I don't really use the home phone very much, so that's not a factor either.
All help gratefully received :)

£20 per month which includes line-rental & unlimited calls
normally with broadband, you'd have to pay bt line-rental on top
JohnGraham 25-01-2008, 16:26 ive heard VERY bad things about talk-talk from more then one person, although the people do not live in sheffield but scarborough who told me.
johnbradley 25-01-2008, 16:27 utility warehouse - which magazine rate them, and they do a £20 deal that includes line rental.

DLPLASTERING 25-01-2008, 17:10 if you have a o2 contract mobile phone in the household you can get o2 broadband £7.50 a month 6mb download rate. excellent. no problems so far with it
scottishdude 25-01-2008, 18:32 Why don't you go for AOL and get a free laptop?
Lyndsay - How about going local and having a look at the Plusnet website? I have been with Force 9 (now Plusnet) for 4 years and can recommend them. The company is in Tenter Street, Sheffield and the support is 100% UK (24/7).
There is no fixed contract to sign up to. Have a look at the Plusnet forum and you will get an idea of what people think about their broadband service.

Beware of comparsion sites when you are looking for a provider, what do they actually know about broadband. Fine if you are choosing on cost alone.
And most of these sites will only list the larger ones that will pay them a commission.

If you want advice choosing a provider then look at an independant site, such as thinkbroadband.com

Savannah2 25-01-2008, 20:09 I can 100% recommend NewNet (http://www.newnet.co.uk/broadband/home.php)
In the two years I have been with NewNet I have only experienced 10minutes downtime.
NewNet does not operate a policy of managing traffic and traffic types on their broadband network.
Speeds are consistent both during the day and at evenings too.
I pay £12:95 a month for 3GB and if I need more bandwidth I can purchase extra for £1:40 per GB.
Support is by knowledgeable staff and based in this country.
Your only commitment is for one month, so if it isn't for you then you are not stuck into a lengthy contract.
Have a look at the comparrisons here (http://www.thinkbroadband.com/isp/compare.html?isp_3=1&isp_26=1&isp_77=1&isp_22=1&isp_23=1&commit=Compare)

oooh, my OH has a contract with O2. we'd still need a landline too wouldn't we, is it expensive? i've only ever had the package deals.
Thanks for all the help, much appreciated!
lyndsayx 26-01-2008, 10:08 Why don't you go for AOL and get a free laptop?
well, i was considering that... but not massively keen on AOL.. and they sign you in for a 2 year contract. hmmm
sallonoroff 27-01-2008, 12:32 I'm on PlusNet and have never had any major problems.
Just a word about the O2 broadband... you need to check it is offered on the exchange you'll be using. It isn't available everywhere yet.
.
stringlife 27-01-2008, 23:46 u got to have a o2 contract first in order to have cheap o2 broadband

im choosing Utility Warehouse because (a) a well known magazine rate them highly, (b) customer support is strong, (c) the price is good, (d) the service down the line will be the same as BT yet a tenner cheaper... oh, and (e) as the shop i work in are agents for them, i get £20 back off em when i sign up.
No fixed term contract, just a £50 buy out policy if you terminate within first year, no need to get MAC code if you are on an LLU enabled line.
Sounds like an ok deal to me:)
Jack a wifi connection lol.
lyndsayx 29-01-2008, 13:35 haha, couldn't do it even if i wanted to!
