I have both speakers and a headphone set connected to my PC.

Currently I do it through a 3.5mm '2 into 1' adaptor (http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=1214&TabID=1&source=15&WorldID=&doy=20m2) (from Maplin) which plugs into my audio out socket.

The adaptor, frankly, is not much good and I suppose this could be expected at £1.49. The sockets are too wide and result in poor connectivity; susceptible to the slightest knock.

I have looked elsewhere, but to no avail.

Does anyone know where I can find a better adaptor than this?

You could try Dixons or Currys or somewhere like that. Wouldn't expect it to be cheap. And take the existing one with you so you don't have to explain to the poor oxygen-deprived sales assistant what it is you are looking for.
Alternatively, a few of the stalls down the market on the Moor do them as part of a sort of connectivity pack. It's still not going to be hi-fi buff standard, but may be better than the Maplin's one you've got.
Also, if your speakers have a powered amplifier, can they not be plugged into the line-out socket on your PC? That may solve the problem another way.

personally I connect my PC to my stereo via a 3.5mm audio to dual phono into my stereo's AUX input, then I can just plug my headphones into my stereo if I need :)

I cant see why your doing it the way you are if it's a stereo speakers... because most PC speakers have a headphone socket :?

I use a pair of USB headphones.

The PC's speakers are connected to the sound card as normal. Then, whenever I need the headphones they become 'active' as soon as they're plugged in and disconnect the speakers automatically.
