View Full Version : Wedding Dresses - Cheap designer copies from China

EDIT Oct 08: I would NOT recommend getting a cheap fake wedding dress copy!
look here to see why: http://www.scribd.com/doc/6330030/Photo-Report3

Has anyone ever bought one of these for their wedding?

For example, the ones you can buy on Ebay that are made-to-measure, or on websites like this one (http://www.landybridal.com/Product/sort4-3.html) - all the dresses on here are about £100, which sounds too good to be true :suspect:

Does anyone know what the quality is like? Has anyone tried on an original at a shop then bought a cheap copy - if so, how similar was the quality?

The Maggie Sottero dress I like is being sold on this website, and I was wondering whether to take the risk?

From personal experience if it looks to good to be true it usually is.

Debenhams and BHS used to do some good quality ones that were not much more its worth getting something that will stand the test of time and not fall apart on the day. Good luck though whoever he is is a lucky man. :D:D

 Thanks CV!
I've actually got a particular dress I like (although I haven't tried it on yet cos they don't have it in Sheffield)
Its this one: front (http://s24.photobucket.com/albums/c12/KATIEB_23/?action=view&current=A3115-nadine.jpg) back (http://s24.photobucket.com/albums/c12/KATIEB_23/?action=view&current=A3115.jpg) but shh! Don't tell anyone its a secret!! :hihi:
I'm not sure how much the genuine article costs, prob £600+, and it's on this website for about £100 so saving £500 on the same dress would be a bonus (if it does indeed look the same...)

Hmm yes thats what I was thinking! ;)
I could be completely honest on Ebay & even if I only got a portion of the money back it would still not be that much money wasted in comparison to the overall costs of a wedding... hmmm... very tempted!

I've heard some horror stories about people buying their dresses from ebay, didn't turn up, fit etc. You may find your wasting £100 rather than saving £500.
If your going to buy from ebay i'd go for a private seller i think rather than the big chinese ones, they have no customer service and know one to speak to if it never turns up.

I bought my dress off Ebay. It was from a UK seller and arrived within a week. I chose a site that did returns just in case, but I neednt have worried as the dress was so much better than I was expecting. It was great quality, the sizing was spot on, but the best bit was it only cost £135.

i brought my wedding dress off ebay. from a lady in china as well. before i did i looked at her feedback and the dresses which others had brought and i emailed them to see what they thought of their dresses. there were no complaints. the dress i wanted was £1500 in the shops and she made it me for £80!!! there is absolutly nothing wrong with it. in fact im thinking of starting a business even if i sell them for £300 im making a very good profit. yes there probably are some naff coppies but email people that have used them and research first.

Katie, would recommend you to have a look at bestbridalprices. The site has amazing variety of wedding dresses and styles. I ordered my Bonny dress from there and received it yesterday. Was a bit nervous to make such an important purchase online, but the price difference (even with the shipping costs) and the much nicer styles offered prevailed. Got a stunning Bonny dress for £230 (including the £44 customs cost). Most dresses have 11-13 weeks delivery time. Mine was shipped at the time advised in my order confirmation and was delivered by UPS. The dress looks even better than the photo and fits like a glove. There is a sizing guide for each designer showing both the US & UK sizes. All in all very pleased with the service and so happy about my dress :))

KATIE_23 - Did you buy your dress from those Dudes/dudettes on Ebay? :hihi:Not yet - I want to try the *genuine* version of the dress on first so that I know that style suits me first.
I haven't done that yet because I'll have to pay £35 for them to get the dress in for me to try on as its from the winter 2007 collection (sooo last season, dahling - as I was told when ringing around to see if any shops stocked it instore!) and I want to lose a bit of weight first ;)

PS. I did notice at the shop that all the *genuine* Maggie Sottero dresses say "Made in China" on the label anyway... :suspect:

When do you want your dress for though? It looks like it may be a while before I can try on any more wedding dresses - I've just had an operation and can't leave the house for a few weeks :(
When I'm better I'll get back on the case though, and will let you know as soon as I've ordered anything.

UPDATE

A while ago I was contacted by somebody from Preloved saying they had the genuine dress I wanted in my size, brand new, to sell to me for £400 (full price was £950).
She assured me it was the genuine article and I was very excited and thought it was fate!

Well, the dress that arrived was an obvious fake - and completely put me off the idea of taking the risk of getting a fake off Ebay ever again!

I'll let the photos talk for themselves as there was too much wrong to even begin to describe (I had to compile a photo report to cover my own back and get a paypal refund when she started denying it was a fake)

Does anyone know how I can upload a pdf or word document rather than a jpg?

Have a good look at this and take it as a warning not to take a risk and get a cheap fake wedding dress!!

PS. You can't tell from the photos how unflattering the dress is because you don't know what I look like the rest of the time, but trust me it makes me look about a stone heavier around the waist & hips than I actually was! :o

I now have my perfect wedding dress - although that incident put me off that particular dress completely, even the real version! I decided I wanted something slinky and floaty, not corseted with lots of heavy layers etc.
I went to Avorio (under West One) and fell in love with a Jenny Packham dress - one that Liz Hurley wore for part of her wedding!

Thanks honeyB, looby & binty! :)

Binty - maybe don't let it put you off completely - just make sure you're very careful about who you order from and what their returns policy is. And if you don't get your hopes up completely, when it arrives and is lovely then you'll be extra pleased because you'll be suprised!! :D
As you can see, lots of other people have been pleased with their internet bargains.

And don't forget, I didn't actually get mine from Ebay - god knows where she got it from! I assume she had got it from Ebay & when it arrived she saw it was rubbish and flogged it on - but it was dead cheeky of her to pretend it was genuine. If she had been honest from the start then I wouldn't have got so excited then felt so let down.

Just for all those who are looking at ebay or a factory in China direct, all the pictures they use are from other websites, say for example a maggie Sottero dress. This means that you don't actually see what your dress will be.

I struggle to trust any designer that doesnt show you their own picture of the dress, rather someone else's, which is different material and different beading etc.

I agree that this can sometimes be a more affordable way of finding your wedding dress. But I dont think it is the best way, there are many dresses available at prices that are reasonably priced.

If a dress is £150 to you, how much do THEY make?, this means that the material is cheaper than the real thing, ok they haven't the overheads of a bridal shop so you can save then. BUT, you miss out on the experience and risk the danger that Katie had.

OK, I am biased, but these companies trick people into thinking you can get a particular dress on a picture, which is never the case. I am afraid you get a cheaper version. I admire all those who have got their dress this way and am pleased that most of you have not had a bad experience from it. I also apprecaite that for some this is the only way to get a wedding dress.

Probably opening myself up to alot of comments now, but just my views! x

I bought my wedding dress from ebay, made to measure, took 3 weeks but TOTALLY worth the wait it is amazing, sooo beautiful. Cost me £89 and have been told me a seamstress is quite easily a £2000 dress as the quality is amazing, it is lined with silk and the bodice has been hand stitched! I was a little hesitatant myself but I could not be happier with it! xxx :)

He is no longer registered on ebay as he works solely for himself though he has advised anyone who maybe interested can contact him via email yuanshang_cao@yahoo.com.cn , and he can send pictures of the dresses that he offers and arrange discounts and costs etc. He is a lovely guy and very helpful. Let me know how you get on.

Has anyone heard of a website called inweddingdress.com they have some beautiful pictures of dresses which they obviously copy. I have seen a dress and priced it up and with shipping it will cost me £180 it is exactly the same as one I have seen in a shop which is £1200 I am tempted to take the risk and order it as I could potentially be saving £1000 and figured if I didnt like the dress I could sell it on.

Good luck, I hope you have a better experience than I did.

I bought a dress from a Chinese set up, gave all my measurements and the dress arrived when promised. Unfortunately the measurements were way out and it didn't fit. It was also a very cheap material and felt horrible to the touch. Very scratchy. I contacted them to explain the problem and that it didnt match the sizes I gave, they said I should return it and they'd refund.

As the wedding wasn't far off, I explained I needed another dress quickly. They wanted paying again to despatch another dress. Fair enough. I paid again because the communication was good between us. This is where it all went wrong.

Communication ceased from this point onwards. No new dress arrived and no refund came from the returned dress.

Fortunately I'd paid by Paypal so started the process of trying to get my money back. I'd got proof of postage for the return which I scanned and sent, but even then they still dragged their heels stating they had no knowledge of the transaction or hadn't received the dress. It was a distressing nightmare. They also had problems communicating in English, it was very disjointed English.

Paypal were useless as usual and gave up saying they ruled in my favour but couldn't get the money back as they had insufficient funds in their account.

Eventually after lots of emails I got a refund for both dresses about two weeks before the wedding!!!

I ended up with a lovely dress from Monsoon instead.

Well fingers crossed I dont get married for another year but because I get married 28 December 2010 I wanted to get as much done and sorted I guess we will see when the dress arrives I have heard good and bad reports from people who have bought dresses I am just hoping that I am going to be one of the good reports but I am not holding my breath as my luck is not great but thought I would take a chance. Its worth the risk as the dress I want exactly the same is £1200 so potentially I could save a grand although I am aware I could also lose nearly a couple of hundred pounds.

I will report back as soon as the dress arrives which I reckon will be end of January fingers crossed.

jessica1978
30-12-2009, 14:58
Well my dress has arrived and other than me measuring wrong it is absolutely amazing I cannot believe or begin to explain how good the dress is and it cost me £180 including shipping.

I would HIGHLY recommend www.inweddingdress.com my only advice would be when measuring make sure you measure the hollow to hem when you have shoes on not like me who measured with flats on. If you are not sure what hollow to hem is its from the hole in the middle of your neck to the floor (or required length). It maybe an idea to add an inch on your measurements incase you can always get it altered.

I am going to try an underneath net but if I am not happy I will sell it and buy another the exact same.

I am so happy I took the risk even though I measured slightly incorrect it is well worth the money in fact I feel quite cheeky thinking that someone has taken so little for it.

If you visit the website my dress is code DE001 like I say I might sell it and buy the same dress but longer so if anyone is interested its a size 12/14 I am 5ft 8 so it will be longer on anyone below this height.

The dress has only taken 3 weeks from order which is amazing.

If anyone has any questions just post back.

The material is satin and very heavy the dress is all boned and looks perfect. Maek sure if you order one that you measure with shoes on which is what I didnt do which is why my dress with heels will be slightly too short although if I put a net skirt underneath it will be fine, although I am still in two minds whether to just buy another as for £180 you cant go wrong.

My dress is gorgeous and based on the dress I have bought I would highly recommend inweddingdress.com I obviously cant say what any other dress is like and would be interested to hear anyones elses experience buying from them.

Before I ordered the dress I talked it over with my Mum as I had seen a dress in a shop I liked, my Mum said for £180 if I didnt like it I could sell it on ebay and that I should go for it and I am so glad I did even if I do deceide to sell this one to get another one longer I will definitely be buying the same dress.

When do you get married ?

I get married end of December and I know I have ordered my dress early but I wanted to get as much done and out of the way with the wedding being at Christmas. Havent decided what to do yet about dress by all means if you want to take a look at it before you order one you are welcome to look at the quality of the one I have bought if your in any doubt.

I've seen the bridesmaid dresses that I want from this site, yes it is China and I know that the dresses are replicas but i'm just wanting to know if anyone has had any experiences with them, there's not many reviews when you google them.. I don't want to pay £160 per dress if I can get them a 1/3rd of that price.

Tbh iv dealt first hand with ppl who have purchased the copies of ebay from China, they normally come to me with nasty horror stories, iv seen a couple and the quality is terrible they look and fit nothing like the photo's.

I would steer clear big time.
If you like contact me i can give you a price n how much it would cost to have the dress made i have my own designers and seamstress. My most expensive gown is £749.00 and that is seriously stunning.

Clairabella,

I have contacted the man in China that you recommended for making wedding dresses. He is lovely. Is his name Ying Jin? I'm wondering if you could possibly email a photo of the wedding dress he made for you? Maybe one from your wedding day? I'm very scared about having my dress made overseas, but I cant justify $1000's of dollars on on dress for one day..... despite being a complete perfectionist.

My email is shezebelle@mail.com

I live in Melbourne, Australia.

Thank you so much!!!!!!!!! I hope to hear from you soon :)

Hello Clairabella,

Could you please email me a photo of your dress that Ying Jin - (yuanshang_cao@yahoo.com.cn) made for you?

I would be most grateful :)

I would like to see his quality of fabrics & dress making for my own wedding dress in October.

My email is shezebelle@mail.com

Thank you so much

Sheree

Just make sure when you measure the length you do it with your shoes on I made the mistake of not doing this the dresses I have are gorgeous one is too short but stunning all the same.

Good luck

My step-daughters wedding dress arrived from China this week and to be honest it was even better than expected!!! The seller on ebay was mlaixy. We asked for slight alterations which were done to our requirements. The dress cost less than £100 and has a 6' chapel train too. The embelishments are perfect, the stitching is too. In fact I would struggle to find a fault other than no "strap" on the underside of the dress for help in lifting/carrying the train so as not to damage it.

In all honesty I don't know how they do it for the money, but I'm glad they do.

I would definitely recommend that if you are still unsure, take the plunge. We must have ordered the most intricate dress there was (that I saw) and it was more than worth the gamble.

i brought my wedding dress off ebay. from a lady in china as well. before i did i looked at her feedback and the dresses which others had brought and i emailed them to see what they thought of their dresses. there were no complaints. the dress i wanted was £1500 in the shops and she made it me for £80!!! there is absolutly nothing wrong with it. in fact im thinking of starting a business even if i sell them for £300 im making a very good profit. yes there probably are some naff coppies but email people that have used them and research first.

I got mine off someone that sent it from china on ebay, I paid £120. Thats was shipping as well it fitted perfect and wass same as the one I wanted at around £1200.

The dress looks fantastic for the money, not quite the style i am wanting but the detail etc is great. Thank you for emailing me the pictures as well. Hope she had a lovely day. I really don't know what to do but for £100 its worth the risk, it may save me a grand or so. I will let you know how i get on x

You're bang on Lily1979, I don't expect the dress to be everyones taste but you can certainly see from the photo I posted here, and the other couple of pics I emailed you, that you don't get rubbish, and certainly get value for money.

Also, bare in mind that at one wedding dress shop, Lizzy was told that once she had chosen her dress, it would take 6 - 8 weeks to be delivered from China!! Gives you an idea on the mark up they're making ;)

As a dress maker I wouldnt reccomend buying dresses from china ,I have had to put quite a few right in the last few months, firsty one which was only tacked together at the bodice and skirt, needless to say one sharp pull and the dress would have fallen apart, number 2 dress the sides seams on the skirt was not in line with the bodice seams (at least 6inches away) which meant I had to unpick the dress and realign it,no 3 dress lots off lovely sparkly adornments all falling off ,had to stitch most of them back on and then there was one were the lining hadnt been sewn together I could carry on but hope you brides have got the message,Most brides have to have their dresses altered mainly because of the legnth wich is acceptable but buy from china at your own risk
Good luck Clare

Said it before, and will say it again. You will only hear the bad about the China dresses, never mind the hundreds that are perfect! Where do you think the shops get them from? My step-daughters was just shy of £100 and would have cost easily more that £1000 in a shop.

Even if something did need sorting, the cost of that wouldn't be anywhere near what the dress would have cost in a shop.

I am more than happy to share pics of the dress we got ..... absolutely stunning, made to measure and perfect in every way :D

Hi Girls,

I looked at a few from China but as my wedding was bit last minute I didn't have time to wait for the shipping.... the dress above on photobucket does look GORGEOUS!!! (pretty lady!!) .... I also think if you have time then it's worth a try (you could always try to re-sell if you're not happy).
Mine is for sale on ebay at the minute - there seem to be quite a few second hand ones on there- so girls if you are looking for a bargain I would recommend that- or there is a site called something like - sellmyweddindress.com which is good as you can search under designers names and also post a 'wanted' add. :-)

My soon to be sister in law got hers from china via ebay. The first was too small as her thighs are very big compared to her waist and hips, the second was the wrong colour (her fault)-she sold them on. She ordered the third slightly too big and got it altered here. In all she paid £100 (after selling the unwanted ones) and is very happy with the final product. You need to leave plenty of time and be prepared to get it altered here (probably best to order slightly too big) but it seems a good deal.
