im going to ask certain other websites to link back to mine to help with that side of it. do i just get them to add a link or is there any specific code i have to use?

You want to pick your linking sites carefully so hopefully they have something in common with your sites' content.

One-way links are valued higher than link swappping.

No special code required for the likes of google, just a link. Google will find the link and make a note of it.

They just need to link, although using your URL in a page that uses alot of your keywords in the context helps aloy - that was apparently added to Pagerank a couple of years ago to give less credit to link spammers

Don't hold your breath too much :)

Whilst yes links to your site do make a difference they need to be high value links. i.e. from sites that already have a high ranking. This is more important than having relevance.
The google algorithm also value content and how it is laid out in higher esteem.

If you want to get a high ranking on google then you need to make sure you content is
a) easily accessible AND digestible by the google spiders
b) The content has a high density of search words that are in real sentences and high up the page.
c) Search words in header text carry more weight than in body text.
d) loads of other criteria.....

Getting a high google ranking is no longer as easy as people think. Their algorithms have really improved of late to stop people trying to fake high rankings.

Took me quite a a few weeks of work redesigning my site to even get on the first page let alone in the top 5!

If you google on how to improve your search ranking there's loads of info and tips around on how to do it. it just takes a bit of time to implement if you've not written the site with getting a high ranking in the first place which many people (myself included) don't initially.

Article marketing can be very effective in getting both backlinks and traffic to your site(s).

Basically - write a few hundred words related to the subject matter of your site, include a resource box at the end with a link to your site, submit to it ezinearticles.com and away you go....

Then write another, and another, and another etc.
