Yep that comes a close second in my book & I never get to tire of listening to London Calling espcially that opening bass line hook

I like most of them, but for dancing to..It has to be 'Rock the casbah'.Mind you , this was a little bit mainstream for my usual tastes!

So many to choose from... such a hard choice...

I can't decide between "Stay Free", "White Man in Hammersmith Palais", "Complete Control" and "Capital Radio" - with "Radio Clash" and "Know your Rights" right behind

PS Add "Gates of the West" and "Pressure Drop"

I can never answer these!

I'll go with the following.

"Gates of the West", "Whiteman in Hammersmith Palais", "Armagideon Time", "Something about England"

Sorry I can't choose one!

"Spanish Bombs", "Working for the Clampdown", "White Man In Hammersmith Palais", "Jimmy Jazz", "The Right Profile","Rudy Can't Fail"..........and umpteen more.................

Mind you I think "Lovers Rock" and "Four Horsemen" on the "London Calling" album are some of the most embarrasing waste of vinyl since prog rock "concept albums".

Has to be, and still is one of my all time fav's 'Rock the Casbah'. I remember buying it from a second hand record shop in town and it had come from a jukebox so the vinyl record had no middle in it! :hihi: It also takes me back to the Limit days on a Saturday night, Great!

Oddly enough probably Junco Pardner from the Sandinista album. I always felt a bit dubious about the Clash though. I loved the Pistols, Buzzcocks, Damned etc. The Clash always seemed like "the cool kids dressed up in punk fashions" to me.

Very cliche but 'Should I stay or should I go?' and 'Rock the Casbah' , just because they are both great songs to dance to.

I asked my mate this one about 18 months ago & straight away he said White Man (In Hammersmith Palais) which is mine also. Fantastic track & it barely made the Top 40. Then again most of The Clash singles had little effect on the upper reaches of the British charts. I was only thinkin' the other day that I love a few of it's lyrics but it's the beat/rhythm that does it for me.

I cant understand why the "London calling" album is often quoted as a great album;I find it quite mediocre.

the best thing about that song is the way strummer's voice gets more aggressive as the song goes on... a calm start, but by the time he gets to 'and if adolf hitler' then 'and the white man' after that, it's full of anger and violence

they didn't record a song for a levi's ad

their record company sold the song to levi's, then re-issued it as a single ten years after it was written and six years after the band had split-up

********, Basil

They had no choice about that - it's an excellent example of what Joe is so angry about in "White Man in Hammersmith Palais" - "turning rebellion into money". The band had no hand in it.

The Clash never, EVER sold out - and that is one of the many reasons why so many of their fans still love them to this day. They were different. And they 'meant it man'.

It is my understanding that an artist has the right to refuse to allow a recording to be used for an ad. The Beatles went to court over the use of "Revolution" in an ad, even though their record company and publishers had given permission - and they won.

Not a fan of the Clash but I have to admit I liked Bank Robber (1980).

Then again, it reminds me of being in Miami, lovely hot weather and in a hotel overlooking the sea, aged 11.

Come now. If Long Haired Lover From Liverpool had been on the ghetto during my hols in Florida I'd probably feel quite fond of that too.

Come on Ousetunes, I was expecting a chapter and verse recounting of the Beatles' court case re Revolution, including name of the judge and key barristers, dates, what the jury had for lunch etc! :D

I think it was Yoko who brought the case to court, Beatles Versus Nike.

Sadly, this is only the beginning as the surviving Beatles and the estates of the deceased Beatles have given permission for Beatles songs to be used in adverts with almost immediate effect.

Rumour has it that a certain nappy manufacturer in the US will lead the way, selling their products to the sounds of All You Need Is Love.

It's an apt precedent to set as the whole idea is, frankly, a load of ****.

I lost a bit of respect for Joe Strummer a few years back at Glastonbury with the Mescalinero's.

He vented his frustrations on the camera man, called him a c*** and tried to smack him. The poor bloke had done nothing wrong, just wrong place, wrong time.

Ah, but the fact is there is an issue of permission to give. Can't be done without their permssion. So I would suggest the Clash gave their permission for Levi's to use their song. Not that I have a problem with that, personally.

Code13 - In the Beatles case it was Sony/ATV who own the rights to Northern Songs.

I've inserted a link into my post above.

A skint Michael Jackson also might have something to do with the mass sell-out/cash-in/blasphemy.

Code13
24-01-2008, 13:36
Hmmm, I wonder why it keeps saying "lyric" rather than song? Wonder if the ad will only quote the lyrics but not use the record?

JoeP
26-01-2008, 07:13
Code13 - actually, AFAIK permissions tend to be given by the people who own the IPR of the songs - not necessarily the song writers.

This is why you occasionally hear of song writers really trashing a cover of one of their songs - they didn't give permission.
