I'm a returning student and used to think I was a bit of a basketballer...thats before I joined the Sheffield Uni mens team and found alot of them to be self centred, pre-supposing pillocks!

Was wondering if anyone knows a good mens team (preferably local) that likes to play for fun and not some ego-tystical, over technical pretence???

Basically I'm dying to put those trainers on again and shoot some hoops (corny American slang I know)

Me too. I've been here since finishing uni though.

I was at Hallam and we used to play yorkshire league and sheffield league matches. There must be some of those teams still around. There just doesn't seem to be any way to get contact details for them.

I'd be interested in a bit of training and then a maybe local league matches when I've got my fitness back!!! I also know a few other ex-players who might be interested.

Let me know if you find anything.

I found the address of the Sheffield Basketball League and I got this response from him.

Sorry I didn't get back to you earlier, been on holiday. I am the chairman of the Sheffield Basketball League. We are just about to start our season (11th Nov @ Institute of Sport @ Attercliffe. I have attached a pre Christmas fixture list, but unfortunately it would be too late to enter a team this season. If you let me know where you all live I can put you in touch with a training session or we train @ the Institute of Sport on Fridays, 6.00-8.00 (£2.50)

Regards,
Gary Candow

I've also got a fixtures list and they play on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. I might go along and train with them but we might try and organise our own session and enter a team next season.

I keep you posted but I just thought I'd let you know this for now.

That's be quality!! It's been far too long since I've played, and I would definitely need training before playing again properly!! Maybe we could meet for a knock about before xmas?

I'll try and sort something out. Friday isn't a good night for me really so I'll try to arrange another session somewhere else. If I find a court I'll let you know when and where.

there are a few courts off of West Street if u didn't know.

Thing is Sheffield's getting cold and dark and outdoor courts may sound a bit dicy.

Better than nowt though.

Of course I wasn't suggesting an outdoor court!!

I have a few other mates who have said before that they want to start playing again. If we could get a regular indoor court then I'm sure we could get 10 people together each week.

Things are a bit busy for me at the moment but if I find anything I'll let you. If you come up with anything let me know.

Will try the University sports centre S10.

Might be a bit pricey but I should be able to get discount of some sort.

Where abouts are you living and so which places are nearer for you and more convenient?

S10's good for me or YMCA down the road towards Ecclesall rd.

Will get on the case,

I spoke to some of the lads last night and they booked collegiate cresent (while I was away). The problem is trying to organise something when most people are available. I'll let you know if they organise it again.

I'm in walkley at the moment but I work on clarkehouse road and have a car so any of those should be fine.

Let me know what you find out.

Haven't played for a while but used to love it. Would be interesting to see if we could get a team together? I'm about a foot and half taller since then as well :D

Hello,

I've been looking for local Basketball teams aswell. Google led me here and so I was pleased to see that some other people were itching to play. I usually play outdoor in Hillsborough park but with the current climate want to start playing indoors on a regular basis. I obviously don't know you etc but I would be interested in playing if you got something organised. I could probably get someone else to play aswell if needed.

email me if you like.

Do you reckon we could just hire a court? There should be enough of us to have a proper game at this rate... Does Pond's forge have courts?

Yeah they do - we used to hire one to play 5-a-side footy on. Think it worked out a couple of quid each - can't remember it was a while ago...

Think there's an open session at the University Goodwin sports complex on Friday at 8-10pm.

You might have to join as a member but I've heard its a good standard.

Also Sunday 2-4 for University members, went to it yesterday and enjoyed it alot.

I know this thread's a bit old but I'm coming to Sheff in September and if you're short of a player let me know! I haven't played foe about 3 or 4 years, trained a bit with Derby Storm youth when I was younger. Dread to think how rusty I would be after so long though.

Dread to think how rusty I would be after so long, my range would be pretty dodgy I bet.

Check this out (http://www.fatladsbasketball.co.uk/)

I have trained with them, great bunch of people there:thumbsup:

EDIT: Don't check out the above link, it takes forever to load up.
Either goto www.Sheffieldsharks.com and check the link to fatlads or try www.fatladsbasketball.co.uk (a bit slow this one).
