Anyone know where I could get manure delivered to my allotment (Archer Lane)? Preferably in bags rather than a big heap!

Amyvictoria

i would also be very interested in this. I don't need much as i only have two beds in my garden but would like some in bags delivering.

Somebody must have some suggestions! I'd be interested in having a few bags delivered.

Have we found an unmet need?

I think Heeley city farm may sell bags of manure. I'm not sure that they would deliver it though.

For manure for my allotment I get it delivered from a local chap who keeps a few horses. I would suggest looking round your local area to find something similar such as a riding school etc. I pay £15 for a massive trailer load

Hi,

Does anyone know where I can get some good quality manure from? I thought about B&Q, but I'm not certain of the quality.

Ta,

Theres always a sign at the stables for "free manure" at the whiston roundabout.

Where do you live? Might be worth checking out local stables as bunnykins suggests.

also picked up this notice at our allotment shop.

Tractor load of manure delivered:
£25 weekday
£30 weekends

no idea what quality it is though or what animal come to that

craigpugh
25-01-2008, 18:32
or which end of sheffield your allotments are?*

Someone must know more about manure than they're letting on. There's a huge demand for it, and a huge supply of it, why's it a big secret. I've SEEN piles of it where its been delivered to our allotments (grimesthorpe). But NO-ONE knows where to get any.

Come on spill the, ahem, beans.

Edit * posibly meersbrook judging from your signature thingyon the lefthandside!

craigpugh
27-01-2008, 21:52
come on folks, we need details- names numbvers, locations. All this mysterious 'try a few stables' and 'see if you can find a man who owns a few horses' is very well and good but we need a trailer load of hoarrrrse sheeeeee-ite so tell us what you know folks.

I;m in burngreave we are short on farms stables and such forth up here. Help.

RobD1
28-01-2008, 08:12
I think it depends on where you are in the city. Round our allotments (Hagg House), people use the stables up the road and the local farms down in Rivelin Valley. The allotments in Hangingwater Lane (I think) get their's from the Apalca Farm at Ringinglow. Meersbrook sometimes get theirs from Graves Park, etc.

If you've seen piles of the stuff being delivered to your site just ask who ever is delivering it for a delivery yourself or ask the poeple who have just had it delivered where they got it from.

jeremyjh1
28-01-2008, 13:22
Thanks all. For the record, I don't have an allotment, just a good sized garden where I have been fortunate enough to cordon off an area for veg growing (away from the havoc my kids cause to the lawn, er, patchy, muddy area!!).

Also, I'm in the S35 area - Oughtibridge to be precise.

Don't know why, but I feel sort of uncomfortable going up to a stables and asking 'Can I have a bag of your sh*t, please'

RobD1
28-01-2008, 16:42
I'm sure they wouldn't mind, they have to pay to dispose of the stuff these days. If it you don't want to do that, you can buy 4 bags of rotted manure for the garden centre for £10 (well you can at the one on Manchester Road - Valleyside). Doesn't go that far though and is a lot more expensive than either getting it yourself or having it delivered, but you can use it straight away without having to wait for it to rot down.

craigpugh
28-01-2008, 23:43
Thankls robd1, no if i saw them i'd have tried that strategy! What i've seen is trails of sh*te, the remains of where it's been dumped at the bottom end, then scattered bits where its been wheelbarrowed away- but the trail peters out before it gets to a plot- or i'd be camping out, leaving notes, etc.

Now, when i ask, everyone denies all knowledge.

I need a trailer load delivering- Other Half wont allow us to load up the car, and a few bags wont go far enough. Any clues? Numbers, names, etc.

Just look at the cover page to this forum- this topic has had 5 times more 'viewings' than any other topic. Everyone wants to know how to get the Sh*te but no-one is telling.

craigpugh
28-01-2008, 23:46
Just an observation that seeing as the two threads on manure here have between them over 500 viewings, it is obvious that getting holds of vast tracts of horse plop is the most eagerly anticipated topic on here, so it is no wonder the Manure Mafia are desperately protecting their supplies. Come on, share it round.

As I said we got our from Rivelin Valley, specifically Coppice House Farm, but there are other farms down there. Give some of them a ring.

29-01-2008, 17:06
Hey Craig, why don't you do some research for yourself. It isn't difficult to ring round a few farms/stables etc and it is probably the best way to get a good deal.

Also why don't you call it manure, we are all adults here...

Thank you for your valuable contribution. It's helped a lot.

I have rung round and asked round and not had any joy, which is why i was trying to get word of mouth info via this forum- if you dont have any information, fair enough.

Thank you Robd for the farm name, i'll try them. The problem i had before was finding places which will deliver to north sheffield.

A friend of mine had a load from here last year and it was well rotted. I bought a trailer load shortly after and it was pretty fresh. Now a year on it is still not ideal so I would doubt that what they are offering now is going to be useable for quite a while.

we are just beginning to bag some up so if you can give us a week or so there should be fair few bags. the manure isnt rotted down there are some wood shavings in situe but they do help to create a good mulch. our animals are all fed high fibre diets and i wouldnt say it would take a year to rot down maybe 3-4 months. only thing we ask is if you could if poss maybe return bags they are in when/if you decide to collect some more!
pm me for further details, many thanks to u for taking interest as it is a major headache to get rid of it.

I would like a few bags and can pick up at any time of the year. I live in the North side of the Sheffield if thats your neck of the woods I can drop off some bags and pick them up later if thats convenient. Maybe able to drop off a load for any allotmenteers if at this end of Sheffield if it helps. I can borrow a 1 ton pick up from work.

It's that time of year again folks whereby I need to empty my muck heaps ready for the winter...

I have 4-5 tonnes of horse manure that has been rotting down since this time last year.

Half of it is straw based which is great for mulching and adding to drainage, the other half is muck only, both are great for giving a nutrient boost.

Please bring your own bags, I'll help fill them. Or bring a trailer if you want to! By providing your own bags it means that I can continue to offer it for free!

I'm in S66, just off junc 1 M18. Please pm me for my phone number to arrange collection. I am unable to deliver.

Some chicken muck also available.

All the well rotten has now gone for this year, more will be available after Christmas.

There's plenty of fresh available if your compost heap needs a boost or you're preparing a bed for next year. Please pm if interested in FRESH ONLY.

I would like a few bags and can pick up at any time of the year. I live in the North side of the Sheffield if thats your neck of the woods I can drop off some bags and pick them up later if thats convenient. Maybe able to drop off a load for any allotmenteers if at this end of Sheffield if it helps. I can borrow a 1 ton pick up from work.

hi mate , would you also be able to drop off at two other places .london rd and minna rd burngreave please..........

Is all the manure on here safe? On the garden forum I visit alot people are worried about contanimation from weed killers - http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/grapevine/allotment-advice/aminopyralid-contaminated-manure-information-removal-finding-safe-manure_39626.html , it was a very big issue country wide last year.

We have manure or manure that is now soil. We don't charge but you have to collect/ dig it yourself. At the moment it is full of weeds but if you want any come and collect. We ask for a donation that is then sent to the Clowne Community Farm. This farm helps people with learning disabilities to have hands on experience and training. It is hoped that these people will integrate in society and find jobs.
Thank you to all

Hi Craig,
The next step would be to set up some kind of virtual market place where we could put feedback / customer response to build up into a comprehensive resource.
The manure directory was actually compiled by Stephen Watts (Abundance etc)

Three questions,

1. Has anyone tried nightsoil? (nightsoil is human manure)

2. Has anyone tried green manure?

I'm thinking about a mixture of field bean, and forage rye
after going here: http://www.greenmanure.co.uk/sow_help.htm

also read in a gardening book that comfrey is a great plant to have for home made mulch / green manure / fertilizer

here is what it said
:it is incredibly hardy, so needs to be planted in an enclosed bed or it will spread like wildfire
:prune it as hard as you like, it always comes back
:thrives with any manure, even fresh chicken manure
:if you fill up a water butt with the leaves, and then add water and let it rot you get an amazing liquid fertilizer / tea.
:ground into a paste and mixed with a little fat, it is a herbal remedy as a bone mending ointment.

is this true? has anyone tried it?

3. Has anyone used mushroom farm manure?
How did it go? Any problems?

Well that has put me right off my mince pie.

By the way I never found out who dropped off a small load of manure inside my gate sometime earlier this year- thanks to whomsoever it was, my manure seeking tendencies must have become known. If i owe anything for my share, or if there is the prospect of any more delivered, any information gratefuly recieved.

1. Has anyone tried nightsoil? (nightsoil is human manure)
You want to make sure it is well composted first.
Probably worth a look here (http://humanurehandbook.com/contents.html).
also read in a gardening book that comfrey is a great plant to have for home made mulch / green manure / fertilizer[/QUOTE]

It is a great plant: seems to completely wipe out everything under it: I'm thinking of growing it over my whole allotment until it's killed off the bindweed...
I do believe it makes good plant food and healing ointments as well.
I'm not so sure about the tea though. I think I read it was slightly toxic.

I have 18 chickens and therefore a plentiful and very constant supply of manure! It is bagged and free to collect from S21 tel 074321 48828 to check I have some ready. Be aware that it will need rotting down on your own compost heap before use as chicken poo is very strong.
