View Full Version : Can anybody recomend a good hip-hop album?
FlowerdUp89 22-01-2008, 12:11 Hi,
I'm a big hip-hop fan and have a big collection of albums, but I must admit I'm finding it dificult to find a new hip-hop artist/group that I like. Can anybody recomend me a good album?
Maybe you know an album that isnt well known - that would be great!
Just so you know the kind of albums I like - A Tribe Called Quest, Cypress Hill, Jedi Mind Tricks, Lords of the Underground, Wu-Tang Clan, NWA, Public Enemy..........................................
Thanks:)
If you want a bit more experimental hip hop try Dalek.
plekhanov 22-01-2008, 12:40 The DangerDoom (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQakz9-kvfI) album was great, Contacts + Contracts by D-Tension (http://www.undergroundhiphop.com/audio/albums/detail.asp?UPC=LSR9211CD) has some very good stuff on it, also anything by Mr. Lif (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OtR7pTsj3-c&feature=related)
Classic Rock 22-01-2008, 13:44 No I can't. Sorry.
melthebell 22-01-2008, 19:51 get into something abit more underground
try some wikkid uk hip hop
skinnyman - council estate of mind is one of my fave albums ever...had it on my mp3 player since i got it (it blends nicely with the inbetween tracks bits which are samples from the classic british film made in britain)
also
braintax - panarama is an excellent album
also stuff by foriegn beggars, blade, phi lyfe cyper, taskforce, kalashnekov, dilated peoples, fallacy,
os some leftfield hip hop by the anticon label (sole, restiform, sixtoo, jel, alias)
http://www.anticon.com
mr.blaze 22-01-2008, 20:00 Check out stuff by RJD2 : )
NEKRO138 22-01-2008, 20:47 Akala's new album is pretty good. If you want some good UK stuff try Roots Manuva or Rodney P too.
Pharoahe Monch is also very good. His last album Desire is fantastic. Very soulful and uplifting.
Canibus is an often overlooked rapper with great skill. Blackalicious are brilliant, and Gift of Gab's solo stuff is also very good.
I'll reiterate what others have said about MFDoom.
Common has a some good stuff out. Nas, Mos Def or Talib Kwali too.
And Erik B and Rakim.
And KRS One!

And his furious five of course. I wonder why they were so furious?

Do a search on here for this, as we have all put our most loved hiphop albums down many times on posts similar.
Get Slum Village and The Roots' albums, you'll never look back!!
NEKRO138 23-01-2008, 10:06 It's just a contradiction in terms if you ask me.
And why's that?
metalman 23-01-2008, 11:02 Probably just me, but hip-hop is one of those types of music like rap and opera that I just can't get on with. So I'm afraid as far as I'm concerned, if it's a hip-hop album, it ain't good.
NEKRO138 23-01-2008, 11:39 It's like most kinds of music, there probably is something for you, but just not the stuff you hear.
Sadly for most people who don't like hip hop, their experience of it comes mostly from MTV, Galaxy 105 and from the back of a Vauxall Nova.

We are all entitled to our opinions, but the word 'hiphop' covers many, many artists and styles, sounds and how the music is made which are all under this genre and is massively and worldwide varied, so to say 'if it's hiphop, it aint good', is very thinking in the box.... well this is my opinion, of course!

Couldn't agree more. Again the word to put all this in a genre is just one word, a lot of the hiphop people hear today should be under the word 'hiphop pop'.

Very true :) It's the same with metal....most of what people here is pretty pap.

Well you should definitely stay away from Hip-hOpera then - see track on rotation on Channel U for those interested - its worth a laugh

Was it R Kelly that did that series about a midget in his girl's cupboard?
Unreal.

that just shows the limitations of your appreciation, as opposed to the limitations of the form:)
ppl have mentioned most of the good uns already, but try:
Cunninlynguists - all three albums are pretty good, solid rhymes, nice arrangements, quite musical without being toss.
Jehst - uk rapper, always has good production, and lyrically one of the best yet.
Madlib / Quasimoto - bit messy and wierd, but well likeable, and anything involving Madlib is usually good.
Prince Paul - Prince of Thieves album - concept hiphop album for a made-up film - features loads of ppl, daddy kane, de la, everlast, etc.
Vadim - The isolationist - Anti-pop consortium, vadim, scratch perverts. Enough said!
Smut Peddlers - Porn again - great, sleazy hiphop record. Saturated production, loads of funk samples, rhymes about gizzing on christina aguilera, etc.
:confused:Was it R Kelly that did that series about a midget in his girl's cupboard?

eh? was that a TV series?

No it's an epic multi part 'hip-hopera' the commendable ambition of which sadly far exceeds R-Kelly's meagre talent. It really has to be seen to be believed, does Kelly really think that in real operas they use the same 30 second bit of backing music lopped endlessly and have all the parts sung in exactly the same voice?
Thanks to the wonders of the interweb you can watch it right now if you so wish (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FCXlCkY4Y5g&feature=related), iirc the dwarf doesn't make an appearance for quite a while so you might want to skip forward some.
boutiquechoc 23-01-2008, 12:48 Madlib / Quasimoto - bit messy and wierd, but well likeable, and anything involving Madlib is usually good.
I discovered quite a lot of tracks from Madlib and think he's great!!! I think he brings more out as Quasimoto though I believe.
I have some secret, well I kinda pinched them (It was in the name of music!!!) lol, some off the record, tracks from both his names.
Some tracks are so off the wall and as you say, messy, but the beats are great! Think his name means something like 'Mind Altering, Demented List of Beats' or something along those lines; which says a lot!
Anyway, if you like alternative stuff away from the norm this guy will do it for you!

I heard and saw a bit about this on MTV I think. It was a few videos with silly crap from R Kelly aka the wierdo.

boutiquechoc 23-01-2008, 12:59 Braintax is great!!! Roots Manuva is too, the older stuff is good also. Jehst I like and Lewis Parker & Phi Life, too many to mention tbh. There are some really good UK artists out there, some crap too but hey, that's what it's all about.
jaythedon 23-01-2008, 12:59 Sheffields vey own Hoodz Underground.. They have had a couple of EP's out and now an album.. wicked stuff.
Phanerothyme 23-01-2008, 13:01 this one - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3_Feet_High_and_Rising
plekhanov 23-01-2008, 13:05 Anyone into much of the hip-hop mentioned above could do worse than to come down to either Quoi de Neuf (http://www.myspace.com/hiphopfrancais) my French & Underground hip-hop night or Walk Like a Duck (http://www.myspace.com/walklikeaduckshef) a new underground & old school hip-hop night I've organising.
shakermaker 23-01-2008, 13:06 mos def - black on both sides
talib kweli - the beautiful struggle
blackalicious - nia

Good to hear your doing that! I'll check that out, always on the hunt for more! I don't produce, I do dj every now and again, hiphop, dnb and a bit of house. Mastering the cdj's now too. I am a mad fan of music, would like to learn how to produce, I know the basics but not sat down and worked on anything!
I'll check your myspaz out and add you.

Have any of you heard Kool Keith? AKA Mr.Octogan?
love kool keith, forgot to mention him - dr octogan album is awesome, dr dooom also, he's done loads of other stuff which is patchy, but there are always one or two belters on each album, well worth checking Analog Brothers, Sex Style, The first Ultra Magnetic album Critical Beatdown, and that one called Big Time too.
Good shout outs mentioned!
Check:
Jneiro Jarel/Dr Who Dat...
The Strange Fruit Project
Kev Brown
Aloe Blacc
Guilty Simpson
Little Brother
Ohmega Watts
Tre Hardson (ex Pharcyde)
The key is to dig deeper... :)
Atmosphere - God Loves Ugly/Seven's Travels
Aesop Rock - Labour Days - honestly, if you get one album make it this one, it is absolutely amazing. Not one skippable track (in my humble opinion!)
Brother Ali - The Undisputed Truth
El-P - fantastic damage
Mr Lif - Mo Mega
Gang Starr
Murs - 3:16 the 9th edition
Edan - anything!
Pitman - It Takes a Nation of Tossers - hilarious lyrics, does some parodies of tunes by Roots Manuva and Cypress Hill, it's all very funny dry humour - really good if you fancy something a bit different :)
Cannibal Ox - The Cold Vein
DJ Babu (from Dilated Peoples) - Duck Season 1 & 2, good compilation
TTC - Ceci N'Est Pas Un Disque, obviously these guys are French but don't let that put you off if you're worried you won't understand the lyrics or anything, the tunes are awesome - same with Sian Supa Crew
Other stuff people have previously mentioned, Braintax, Jehst's 'Return of the Drifter', RJD2 - try and get 'RJD2 Is God', it's amazing.
If you wanna hear more varied music, best thing to do is get some sort of compilation, you're bound to like at least some of what you hear and take it from there :) I could recommend so much more but I think I've already gone too far! Enjoy!

seanyboy 29-01-2008, 11:06 Don't think anyones mentioned Panacea yet, try their "The Scenic Route" album.
Also "Pyramids in Moscow" by Restoring Poetry in Music (RPM),
Blu & Exile - "Below the Heavens",
and definately look for some of Elzhi's solo material as well as his work with Slum Village

TTC & Sian Supa Crew are both excellent choices, if you're open minded to look into foreign language stuff then anything by IAM (probably my favourite French hip-hop group) is well worth checking out, Anthologie would be a good place to start.
Den Perry 01-02-2008, 17:22 Y Society album produced by Damu the Fudgemunk (check his you tube stuff - amazing)
Shape of Broad Minds (Jneiro Jarel)
Pharoh Monch latest album
Plenty out there if you search.........

Foreign hip hop is so underrated! I think people are either scared to listen or forget hip hop exists outside the US and UK haha. Just seen your previous post btw, that Walk Like A Duck night looks good :)

They certainly do, also when it comes to much much European Hip-Hop I think they're put off by the (justifiably imho) poor reputation that Euro-pop has in the UK, and tar French hip-hop with the same brush.
Just seen your previous post btw, that Walk Like A Duck night looks good :)
Well hopefully it will be, I did a gypsy punk night in the same venue last Saturday and that went very well so I am pretty hopeful for Walk like a Duck prospects.
back to the OP, compilations can be an excellent way to sample lots of new artists, Ninja Tune does some excellent compilations if you're feeling a little more adventurous the Polish Kodex series has some really great stuff on them.
