I know there are some gas lamps in Sheffield. The one by the sharrow view roundabout at the top of frog walk is one. Does anyone know what these lamps burn. I've heard that they burn methane gas from the sewers but I've never been sure.

I think the are kept alight by ordinary gas from the mains but methane from the sewers is piped up to them so this will have a constant source of ignition.

Could be wrong though......I often am

Yes, methane gas, this is generated naturally in the sewers, gas lamps were designed to burn this off safely and at the same time provide a usful light. This gas is highly explosive, if it was allowed to build up it could create potential dangers.
The lamp I remember most was outside the Catholic school at Sheffield Lane Top.
As most of these lamps have now disapeared, some other method of reducing methane gas build up must be used, if anyone knows what, I would love to know.

The methane lamps are thicker than the old gas lamps, which of course I cant remember. There use to be one on Twentywell Lane and another on London Road. Dont konow if they are still there.
