"But because supermarkets now control 80% of the nation's food basket, if there is a problem it spreads like head lice through a nursery."

that's a really good idea to say that *looks out for evil taliban people poisoning our ready-made foods*

What is Sudan I?
Sudan I is a red dye that is used for colouring solvents, oils, waxes, petrol, and shoe and floor polishes. It is not allowed to be added to food in the UK and the rest of the EU. However, inadvertent contamination of some food products has been uncovered.

bigflesh
18-02-2005, 21:25
What is being done to tackle the problem?
The Agency is working with the food industry and local authorities to make sure that all the affected products are removed from the shelves and is tracing any foods that may be contaminated.

What is the health risk of Sudan I?
Sudan I could contribute to an increased risk of cancer and it is not possible to identify a safe level or to quantify the risk. However, at the levels present in these food products the risk is likely to be very small

If I have eaten an affected product, has my health been damaged?
There is no risk of immediate illness. If you have eaten these products the risk is likely to be very small, and not eating them any more is a sensible thing to do.
Being exposed to a substance that could contribute to the development of cancer does not necessarily mean that you will develop cancer. There are many causes of cancer, including lifestyle and environment.

18-02-2005, 21:26
If the risk is very small why remove the foods?
Sudan I is thought to contribute to cancer, and consumers should not be exposed to it unnecessarily. Experts advise that exposure should be as low as practical. It is also illegal in foods.

Could I have some products at home that contain Sudan I?
A list of known affected products can be found at the link below. It will be regularly updated. If people have any at home they are advised not to eat them and to contact the store where they bought them for a refund.

Could restaurant meals or takeaways be affected?
Some restaurants and takeaways have been using products containing Sudan I. These products are being withdrawn.

What measures are in place to stop this happening again?
All dried and crushed or ground chilli coming into any EU Member State must be accompanied by a certificate showing they have been tested and found to be free of Sudan I. Any consignment that does not have a certificate is detained for sampling and analysis. Random sampling is also undertaken both at ports and by local authorities. All consignments found to contain Sudan I must be destroyed.

The risk is so infinatessimally minute it's not worth the worry.

How many smokers will be beating a hasty dash to the supermarket in their 4x4s tomorrow to take back that 2 year old tin of chilli beans?:loopy:

Bring it on!

Exactly. There is no immediate risk and if thousands of us develop cancer as a result,in years to come then how on earth will we prove it was or might be linked to this?

It is not an isolated risk if it has been added to these foods for any length of time, the cummulative effects could be fatal.

There's a full list in today's Times.

As has been pointed out, the cancer causing possibilities of the dye are not as bad as smoking.

The reason why they're pulling the goods is probably more to do with being good corporate citizens and keeping a weather eye open for law suits in 10 years time.

I had a scout through the cupboard today and no sign of anything bad. :)

Premier may also have broken the Stock Market rules in terms of not informing the market in a timely manner of news that could affect share prices.

Been through my freezer and looks like I've got a little windfall coming my way - but only if they'll refund stuff thats past its use by date.

If only I'd kept the packaging from all the food I'd eaten in the last fortnight too.

Is it just me or is this another pointless scare. This product was only made illigal in june 2003 and is still used in other countries. If it's going to do you any harm I think it would have done it sometime between 1970 and 2003. I am sure there are many other toxins still in use that will kill me before a stray almost undetectable amount of colouring in a pie.

List of contaminated products is now up to 575. I was sitting smug as I buy very little convenience foods but looking at the list now I'm sure we must all have consumed some of the carciogen Sudan 1 especially if eating out.

Who's to say that the increasing incidence of cancer is not related to exposure to this over the years. The thing is you wouldn't stand a snowball in hells chance of proving it. Similarly, the cluster of cancers occuring around ******** are talked down by the powers that be.
