Hey,

My cars had a Service and the oil filter has dissolved in the oil pump and now the oil isn't getting around my engibe properly. I've been told i need a new oil pump and have been quoted around £400 for the part and installation as the guide installation time is 4 hours and 40 mins.

Just wondered if this is a fair price as it is a very large chunk of my salary this month and it kills me to pay this amount.

My car is 2001 Corsa.

Many Thanks,
Gary

I would baulk at that price and look into doing the job myself but that isn't for everybody since I guess it will involve dropping the sump and so on. So you may wish to get a garage to do the job but I would recommend shopping around - try The MOT Centre on Broadfield Road if you are looking for a trustworthy independant garage.

I also find this sort of thing abysmal for a modern car which SHOULD be better quality (though obviously high mileage may have something to do with it) and people wonder why I drive older, simpler-built cars.

You could probably get it done for half that price from many local garages, so shop around. Most would charge around £35/Hour

Currently it's at One Stop in town. I do trust em just wondered if it was a fair price.

This has resulted in 3 years of no service's at all so it's my fault. I will in future obviously spend that £90 a year rather than being hit with this big bill! :-(

I appreciate they may be professional but the hourly rate quoted is a bit on the steep side for a part replacement job.

Even for work that takes more than 4hr 30mins?

If someone said £400 for fitting an oil pump, I would say it's about the top end of OK. But going just on the time quoted to do it, I would say that is expensive (I would have thought it would take much longer) 5 hours x £35 = £175. Probably about £70 for the pump tops, makes £245 all in.

It's £175 for the pump itself. I was there when he rang the company that supplies them. I don't know the name though.

You could get a s/h pump for a 10th of that, does the car move though? is it worth the hassle of trying to move it? Ring the Red Lion garage on Broadfield road, tell them what needs doing and get a quote.. try the scrappers at Heely bridge or that 247 spares web site as a pump for one of those should be easy to get.

I'd be surprised if a scrappy would strip a perfectly good engine for an oil pump - its worth more as a complete unit.

And if they will, its no doubt 'cos the engine is knackered in which case the oil pump probably isnt much better than yours!

£175 sounds a lot for an oil pump.
Most private garages, eg Dore Garage, have arrangements with motor factors and scrapyards and should get one cheaper.
Get a second opinion as to whether it's actually needed.

You could try Ebay, either for the pump or type "CORSA BREAKING" to find someone breaking a Corsa for spares. In fact:

Hehe god knows! I don't think they'd rip me off. The guy called the part people while i was there and that's what he quoted. I've sorted the money and given him the go ahead to do the repairs. Thanks for your help guys anyway.

It all seems a little strange to me,why would they think that you need a new pump?If the filter has disolved at the pump then it stands to reason the pump will have pumped it round the engine and just fitting a new pump is unlikly to be the whole of the problem.
It wouldnt be difficult to wash out the old pump whilst its off.If its as i suspect and the filter has been pumped round the oilways then it is posible you will have problems after they have fitted the pump.fitting the pump seems to be an inadequate solution and i would definatly be making more calls to get some more opinions.a call to vauxhall would be top of my list.

Oil filters don't dissolve!

two points here,
1. As dick says, oil filters dont dissolve.
2. there is a mesh gauze on the end of the oil pick up pipe which would prevent any debris being picked up by the oil pump. it would be a simple job of cleaning out the gauze and refitting (it used to be a very common problem on ford CVH engines).

i would ask to see the 'old' part when you collect the car.
