View Full Version : Explaining The Concept Of "Me" And "You"
Jabberwocky 20-01-2008, 17:02 My 11 month old is just starting to talk now, and Im in the process of trying to explain ME and YOU to her.
I point to her and say YOU, so she points to herself and says YOU.
I say No, then point to to myself and say ME.
She points to me and says ME.
I spit out the chunks of carpet that Ive just attacked in frustration and calmly say NO again and hold her hand and point to myself with it and say Me, then to her and say YOU.
She holds my hand, points to herself with it and says YOU and then to me and says ME!
I cant remember how I did this with my other kids, but I DO remember being locked up in a lunatic asylum for a while each time, so could someone PLEASE help me with this?!
She'll pick it up fast enough if she listens to you and her mother talking to each other. Trying to explain it to her is only ever going to make things worse. :D

Ah, bless, dont rush her. This is very young to be talking. Dont confuse her. Be relaxed with her and she will soon grasp it.:)
Jabberwocky 20-01-2008, 17:16 . Be relaxed with her and she will soon grasp it.:)
Well that worked with mummy :D
pattricia 20-01-2008, 17:17 Well that worked with mummy :D

*Peaches* 20-01-2008, 18:16 Give it time, she'll soon get it ;)

But how far down the road of insanity will I be by the time she does?
Shes gone to bed now, thank god, but for a moment or two back there I could feel myself slipping into lunacy.
rubydazzler 20-01-2008, 18:19 Does she recognise herself in the glass yet? I have an idea that the Me, Myself and I concept normally follows that milestone, which happens around 10-12 months old?
How cute though ... you should record yourselves and put it on for us to coo over!

Give it a few days and try and explain it again.

11 months. I remember when you had her, well not you but I remember you posting on here. Blimey time does go quick on here.
You may well find that forgetting about 'you' and 'me' for the moment will work better- she's not really old enough to grasp the concepts yet.
How about using names instead? 'Who's that in the mirror/photo?' 'Daddy/Mummy/insert name here' works much easier until she's capable of grasping it.
Jabberwocky 20-01-2008, 18:24 How cute though ... you should record yourselves and put it on for us to coo over!
What? Me screaming and bubbling in frustration while she grins vilely at me?
Jabberwocky 20-01-2008, 18:25 11 months. I remember when you had her, well not you but I remember you posting on here. Blimey time does go quick on here.

I might leave it. I could feel the padded walls closing in, that baby has the most insane smile on Earth and that alone is enough to push me over the edge.
Jabberwocky 20-01-2008, 18:26 welll, erm - YES! :hihi:
Kinky.
Marry me! :D
*Peaches* 20-01-2008, 18:30 I might leave it. I could feel the padded walls closing in, that baby has the most insane smile on Earth and that alone is enough to push me over the edge.
