Not possible I'm afraid.

These guys got pretty upset: http://www.gmail.de/_content.php

And took Google to court: http://www.vnunet.com/vnunet/news/2174047/google-loses-european-claim

So it's googlemail or nothing unless you already have a gmail account before the court case.

Unless you can get someone in another country to sign it up for you and get the password to you. I think you can also use a proxy in another country to access the gmail site and sign up that way, but either way you'll need to change the password as soon as it's done.

Hope that helps,

Not just another country - it would have to be outside of Europe because of the dispute with the German company. A US based proxy might be the way foward I guess.

i have a gmail address, ive just logged in and sent a mail to myself, but instead of putting gmail.com i put googlemail.com and it sent fine, also tested it on my partners account, she has a @googlemail.com account, just put her email then @gmail.com and it sent without a problem, so couldnt you just put your address as @gmail.com instaead, it sends to your address with either extension so no one would know its not a proper gmail one?

I signed up for Google Mail and can send/receive as either me@googlemail.com or me@gmail.com without any problems...

Yeah, there isn't any difference betweeen Gmail and GoogleMail apart from the domain name being used.

They just have to use GoogleMail in UK (europe?) for legal reasons.

You can setup Googlemail to send showing "@gmail.com" if you really want to.
