I had a chance to see the plans for the refurbishment of the City Hall a few months ago and rather than marvel at the spanking new interior of the place, my attention was drawn to the plans for the Ballrooms that abound below.

From what I could see of the plans this area is to become a shining expanse of glass and chrome, with bars and the like...a far cry from the grimy but colourful passages and halls that used to play host to The Drop on a Friday night and then host OAP's tea dances on Saturday morning.

This is another piece of the old Sheffield that will be gone forever, for better or worse. I'm not condeming the changes, just remembering the past. Does anyone else have any memories of this great old venue that they want to share? Or any thoughts for its future?

Sounds like they are restoring it back to it's glory days, I'm all for it.

Got a link to any pictures of the proposals ?

I found a few pictures on the city hall web site, but they don't show much.

Don't forget the restoration of Weston Park museum too

Can anyone remember the names of the musicians who played in Bernard Taylor's band at the City Hall in the sixties?

Here's a few:

Jackie bates - drums
Ossie Stewart - Tenor sax
Harold Coates - trombone
Benny Jowett - alto sax
Ray Johnson - tenor sax

In fact, who else was playing in the Sheffield dance halls in the sixties?

It looks like they are trying to keep the art devo style of the ballroom (YAY!) now all we need to do is set up a burlesque night in there ;)
