View Full Version : Network problem with vista & XP HELP!
Basiljohn 19-01-2008, 16:37 My PC and one daughters laptop are both XP and have been wirelessly networked successfully for ages with no probs. My younger daughter has just bought a laptop with Vista on and although it's connected to the router ok and can use internet you can't see the pc or my other daughters laptop and the pc can't see the new vista laptop. I've tried allsorts but just can't get them to see each other so the vista laptop won't use the main printer as this is connected to the pc which it can't see.
Can anyone help and tell me what I need to do?

I'm not sure about vista, but in XP all the computers had to be on the same workgroup.
You can find find out which workgroup both computers are on my clicking on control panel then System'. on vista its at the bottom of the screen that will come up and on XP it is under a tab called 'computer name'
I'd think the workgroup name will be either 'MSHOME' or 'WORKGROUP'

Thanks but have already done that, have troubleshooted and all it said was that I may need to download an update from windows onto my PC but did this and still not made any difference.

This is what is missing from the Vista one. On my PC and XP laptop there's a workgroup but on the Vista one it seems to have networked to the actual gateway not the computers so I can't see the workgroup.
This should help you out

Thanks to everyone for their help, I tried everything! The practically networked site was very good but nothing solved the problem until.... the trial norton antivirus ran out! The laptop came with a 12 wk trial of Norton and once this had run out I opted for the reliable nod 32, once norton was wiped off there were no problems at all!! Just shows it's always the one thing you never think of but in hindsight was so obvious!

I have got the same problem. I used a wired router to connect my new P.C. with Vista to my old P.C. with X.P. I cannot share anything between the P.C.s And the map shows that my computers are not linked but They are both on the net & the e-mail works O.K. I think it is Vista that is at fault because nothing I have seems to work with Vista(printers, scanner).I have downloaded drivers to both machines but cannot get anything to share.I have been at it for over a week now & am just about to uninstall & start all over again.GRRR

Check that all the computers on the network are using the same anti-virus. That was my problem, my main one and my laptop were using Nod 32 but the new one had a trial of Norton as soon as Norton was taken off it all worked beautifully!

You've added 2+2 and got 5. Norton is a piece of crap and may well have been responsible for the problems you were having.
Using the same anti-virus on every machine is not the solution, getting rid of Norton is.
cockneybird 05-04-2008, 01:51 hi i would like to say thank you,i also had the same problem trying to network vista and xp ,i did what you said and removed nortons free trial, and hey presto, every thing works fine, thanks again.:smile::smile:
Never had a problem with XP and Vista networking, sharing files to and from each other... never had a hiccup.. :)
theprofessor 17-11-2008, 12:12 I am still struggling with Vista networking. works sometimes, but always knocks out my router upon exit. Must reset/reboot router after networking access???
ISP provider blames computer manufacturer -:rant::rant: computer manufacturer blames ISP. Looks like I will have to figure it out on my own !!! :D
