Upgrading my speakers for the first time in 15 years so I’m a bit out of touch. Busy reading the mags, and some online forums, but would welcome any suggestions you’ve got.

A few details to help…

Budget is £400 (or £530 if I buy from Seven Oaks right now!).
Got to be floor standers (don’t ask…just a dream I’ve got!)

Thanks in advance.

Nick

P.S. If there’s any hifi forums you know about, would love to know about them to help with more research!

Best bet is find a shop that will let you put a deposit down and try a few at home. After all it's your ears and your setup they need to be tested with :) Places like Moorgate Acoustics might do this, Sevenoaks might as well. I've been out of it for a while as well so no idea what makes are good for floorstanders at the moment.

Both are great audio forums. Have you got a big room? Loads of people get floorstanders and don't really have enough space for them, I have done it in the past! As mentioned, what are you powering them with? I guess you have looked through What Hi-Fi.
I would say keep an eye out for second hand Celestion A2's, I have a pair and they are great, big though and you can get some much thinner floor standing speakers depending on how much space you have. Don't buy anything from Richer Sounds!

There's nothing wrong with Richer Sounds!

There's nothing wrong with Richer Sounds!

Apart from they seem to just sell graded and retruned crap that does not work or Plasma TV's! They have changed their target market over the years so if you want hi-fi, go somewhere else!

Go to moorgate acoustics, try out a few...personally i used to like buying stuff that had a small scratch on the back and getting £400 off for it!! haha.

I'm in love with monitor audio speakers but they usually have some nice ones to choose from in there.

And i would NEVER buy any speakers for over £100 at richer sounds...its a great shop..but it has a level and that level is good stuff at under £100 (i got some speakers for £80 from richer sounds that lasted me well in my 2nd set up in my bedroom)...if you want to be serious about your hi-fi then moorgate should be first stop.

Might be worth checking out second hand too... I got some mission 752f's from Big Deal for £150 and they're awesome. (Granted not quite the 753's I've been drooling over since my teens, but I live in a small terrace so more bass is not necessarily a good thing...)

Thanks everyone for the advice. Been to Seven Oaks, Audio Images and Moorgate this morning to have a browse, got demos booked for tomorrow and next week at all.

Going to listen to Rega R3 (new) and JM Labs 714v (new)

Hadn't thought about second hand until someone mentioned it this morning. Going to listen to JM LABs 805 Electra (s-hand) and some Linn Ninkk S1n (think that's right!) (again s-hand - and just over budget!).

Like the idea of bringing them home, thanks for that.

I've brought various pieces of equipment from Richer sounds in the past (a few years back), everything is still in good working order.
If you are going to buy anthing though, to be safe always insist on a factory sealed box, and make sure you examine the tape on the box carefully to make sure it has been factory sealed and not just sneekily taped back up by Richer Sounds.
