thanks ppl, I just needed a shortcut instead of wading through manuals.

Evildrneil sorted it just by telling me how to log on to MSQl console via ssh using another username (not root).

I mean, MySQL is fine if you're using phpMyAdmin (gotta love it), but this console stuff is strictly for perverts.

Once that was sorted everything else came very smoothly.
