Just a couple of questions:

1. Where can one go to concerts, etc, locally?

2. What good stores are around for music?

Thanks!

Record Collector at Broomhill used to have quite a lot of second hand CD's, must admit though last couple of times I've been in there I haven't even glanced to the right to see if that is what the shelves still hold.

To be honest, there really is no choice other than HMV and Virgin for classical recordings in Sheffield. To be fair, both those places have a reasonable selection, and there is always plenty on offer. Buying online at places like Amazon is really your best bet in terms of choice and price.

Look at www.classicfm.com there's chances of winning concert tickets & all sorts of things. you can buy music from the website AND they will help you if you've heard something & don't know what it's called.
There's a daily free cd competition too - I'm onto my 3rd free cd already in 6 months of intermittant entering. :D

A classical music shop has recently opened on the Abbeydale road (can't remember the name off-hand).

You can get some good deals on classical CDs on Ebay

I've been getting in to a bit more classical of late, particularly Henryk Gorecki - Symphony No.3: Sorrowful Songs which is an awesomely beautiful piece of musical that I think everyone should listen to at least once.

That piece of music inspired Louise Rhodes of Lamb to write their song 'Gorecki' which is also unbelievably fantastic, one of my favourite songs ever.

Hi,
That wouldn't be in that group of shops across from the bottom of CarterKnowle Road would it? If it is they're not advertising their wares very well.

It seems not a week goes by without an advert or trailer or TV show using that work these days, so I think most people will have heard it many times without even knowing it. :)

Respect to you my friend. This is indeed one composer that you can ill afford to overlook.

I've presently got Classic FM's Do Not Disturb on in my car and I tell you, no amount of traffic can stress you out if you're listening to this!!

Give me Mahler's 5th or Beethoven's Emporer (the adagio) and I'm in dreamland....,

I like the idea of specialist shops, including classical music shops, and wish Calow Classics every success.

I wonder though how such shops can compete against the big retailers, such as HMV and Virgin, who can buy in bulk. Specialist classical music shops work in London, around the opera houses and concert halls, but Sheffield is different. Also these days you can get specialist music, including rare imports, via internet retailers such as Amazon or through Ebay.

As I said though I do hope they are successful - it makes browsing along the Abbeydale road that much for interesting

Is the music shop in the side of the City Hall closed now then due to the refurb?

The chap who used to run this shop called it a day, unfortunately. So, unless someone else wants to open a new shop there, I'm afraid that's it!

The University music department run concerts on Tuesday evenings, plus free shows on Thursday lunchtimes. There are a couple of guys playing Ravel and Stravinsky (pianos) next Tuesday :)
