View Full Version : First Bus seats
Shakespeare 17-01-2008, 19:02 Why doesn't this bus company provide seats with some padding in them! You sit down on them at present and after 10 minutes your bum aches. They are worse than cinema seats. It gets me mad they charge too much and you sit on concrete:rant:
I'm glad when they put old buses on they were at least well padded!
puddinburner 17-01-2008, 20:16 Plus you slide off em, when the bus goes round a sharp corner, not a good look, who designs these seats? certainly no-one human.
HandsworthX 17-01-2008, 20:21 The the 52 bus route, had the first new buses under FIRST. We have complained about the seats since DAY 1. What have FIRST done about it. NOWT. Just brought more second hand buses in with the same crap seats
So now I use STAGECOACH (which was Yorkshire Terrier), Better buses, better seats, and they run on time. Just a pity the don't run nights and Sundays.
If you have the option, boycott First and then they may listen to there customers!

stagecoach more comfy than first u havin a laugh i have to sit in the middle of the seat due to there not being enough leg room

They do provide good padding on the seats its just that Sheffield had a huge batch of Transbus built mark 1 double deckers and Wright built mark 1 single deckers.
The seat padding is good on the Transbus mark 2 batches of double deckers of which First South Yorkshire do have but not a huge amount.
The Wright built mark 3 single deckers have good padded seats and it appears First have standardised on these (the ones on the new X78 vechiles) but only West Yorkshire has these singles because we do not need any just yet. No doubt any new singles will have these seats.
volvoB10M 18-01-2008, 10:48 The whole country is going into meltdown and we worry about how much padding is in bus seats, amazing
Funky_Gibbon 18-01-2008, 12:02 Plus you slide off em, when the bus goes round a sharp corner,
Not if you're 6foot plus. Your knees are too firmly wedged against the pointlessly moulded plastic of the seat in front of you for any kind of movement and you don't care about how you look because you're too busy trying to stop yourself from screaming in agony.
It is a genuine pleasure when First send along one of their clapped-out 30 year old buses on your bus route because they've got decent legroom whereas the newer buses seem to have been designed to accomidate pygmies.
Funky_Gibbon 18-01-2008, 12:03 The whole country is going into meltdown and we worry about how much padding is in bus seats, amazing
It's the last straw!
ScareyBabe 18-01-2008, 12:08 What really gets my blood boiling is the ignorant so & so's that put their feet on the seat opposite them, wiping who knows what all over the seat, where some poor sole in decent clothing will sit and get i daren't think what on their clothes.
Do they do it at home? Doubt it.
The padding just gets ripped out by yoofs.
slimsid2000 18-01-2008, 14:41 The seats are about half the size they need to be for any comfort. It is impossible for any normally sized adult to sit on them. Also I agree they can often be very hard.
sallonoroff 18-01-2008, 14:56 Imagine how much the fares would rise if they actually cleaned the bus "upholstery"... :D
Dirty, cramped and uncomfortable... welcome to Public Transport of the 21st century!

I think this a Bus thread (rant) to far!
I for one love abit of ABH on here (Anti Bus Behavior)
But moaning about the seats seem alittle bit picky, its not as if your going on a long half flight is it! i spend 20mins on the bus in the morning, and 20 at night. My bum is fine, and there is not much meat on mine.
My guess to why there is no/mininal padding is:
1) Chavs rip them off
2) The average journey for a customer is probably no longer than 10 mintues.
3) Grannies forgot to wear their tenner ladies and wee on them.
When the council controlled the buses, you use to get seats made out of hard plastic on the top decks, which you never see nowadays. First's Deckers are alot better than they were in the good old days!
Also agree with the lack of leg room on Stagecoachs buses,I have to sit in the middle of the seats to get my legs in.

Veolia busses (A1) are the worst service there is at the min

I'd hate to Imagine what they would find amongst the bus upholstery if they actually cleaned it :gag:
Shakespeare 18-01-2008, 18:55 Bus drivers are good hard working people pity you have to drive ones with crap seats!
Never moan at bus drivers myself. Moans are directed to the high paid boss of your company who doesn't give a monkeys about passengers now the company has got all the money it needs from this stupid gov who have not done a thing about public transport since they landed in 1997.

Nice cosey armchairs and sofas, and a couple of shackletons for the OAPs,yep that should do the trick.
Innocence 19-01-2008, 13:12 lol i usually end up in a right lotta pain on first bus seats coz my bus journey in the morning is 50 minutes non stop!

though their feet are probably cleaner than the bus seats!
partypixie 19-01-2008, 23:31 I would never sit on a bus seat ever again after what my dad told me about them. and he works in the bus depot so he should know!
the seats at the front of the bus where the old 'uns sit usually have **** all over them, the ones at the back can have anmything from pee to vomit to spilt beer, to actual excrement from the drunks and believe it or not from some of the dirty drivers!
and they don't get cleaned properly at night either cos the gaffers don't give the workers enough time to give a bus a proper clean at night.
Vrsaljko 20-01-2008, 11:31 People just like to moan for the sake of it.
I'm sure you've all sat on worse seats, at sporting events or in hospital waiting rooms etc. Most people are only on the bus for 15 minutes at the most anyway. It's just a seat, get over it.
[QUOTE=partypixie;3046751]
the seats at the front of the bus where the old 'uns sit usually have **** all over them,
This is getting very annoying.
WHY do you assume that because I have reached a certain age I have NO bladder control.
I assure you I have never wee'd on a bus seat.
Back to the subject. My bus ride is 50mins there and 50mins back
5 days a week.If you sit on the front seat you spend your time trying not to slide off because for some reason they seem to slant down.
Or is this another way of getting rid of oldies from the bus.

I expect then if the bus company puts up notices inside the bus that they are the most comfotable in blah... We won't pay them millions of pounds then. So they can't stuff the seats with our money! Or they can't cut fares and put more buses on to kill car usage. Which would you do given the choice? Pay them for comfort or get stuck in traffic?

Do you feel really proud of admitting you put your feet up on the seats. You must have a really fulfilled life. My dad is over 6ft and worked as a bus driver for years and when he was travelling as a passenger on buses he never felt the urge to put his feet all over seats and I never have had the urge to either. Probably because he brought me up to respect my surroundings and think of other people around me.
Funky_Gibbon 20-01-2008, 20:31 A bus driver that can read! Aren't you over qualified?
Don't you love this friendly banter :hihi:
Moan Moan
One thing that HAS improved since the "good old days" is bus seats if my memories of getting on the bus in shorts and blazer to go to school on a hot summers day, bare legs sticking like superglue to the vinyl brown leatherette seat coverings with 1/16" of padding between the covering and the hardboard base.
Perhaps modern ones are made uncomfortable to make people stand up - from my observation travelling on a bus, discomfort would seem the only way that an able-bodied person is ever going to bother getting up to give up their seat when an elderly person or mother with small child board the full-to-capacity bus.
No, most people would rather just sit there on their backside and grumble about how rude the bus DRIVER is than worry themselves over basic good maners and civility
If you have the option, boycott First and then they may listen to there customers!
This is what I have done.... I now drive to Hillsborough and jump on the tram... always turns up, cheaper and quicker. If stagecoach ran more busses the city would run a lot smoother.
Regarding seats... you do slide off round corners, especially on the higher seats near the back, plus there isn't enough leg room

Pity the poor 'pygmies' amongst us who may have to stand on the bus and are too small to reach the dangling ring things - you know what I mean !
slimsid2000 22-01-2008, 15:27 Slightly off topic but has anyone else noticed how cold First buses are this time of year but it is always mysteriously warmer at the front of the bus where the driver sits. Anyone would think that drivers only want to keep them selves warm and the rest of us can freeze. Surly this cannot be true.

Bus Passengers moaning.
I think deep down you happy with the service
I agree looking at the amount of passengers jammed on the buses in Sheffield they must be well happy with their lot.
As for the seats I am well content with my driving seat in the Gemini's that I drive armchair driving I call it.LOL

I think that there are some driver's that like to have the heaters on in summer but off in winter I don't know could well be just a wicked rumour though.

mr_busdriver 22-01-2008, 16:21 We did conduct a survey a few weeks back, we asked all car drivers who support a congestion charge ( to fund public transport) to drive around with their headlamps on.
Initially the response was slow, however at around 4pm that evening, the support in favour was huge.

mr_busdriver 22-01-2008, 20:58 Moaning bus passengers, heres an example.

YOu turn the heating off in winter they complain. (try putting on a warmer coat mate)
WhiteHawk 22-01-2008, 21:12 So now I use STAGECOACH (which was Yorkshire Terrier) they run on time.
Do they? I've never caught one yet thats been on time!
SimpyTimpy 22-01-2008, 21:15 I pay £1 (Stagecoach) or £1.10 (First) every morning to get into town on the bus and personally, I think it's a bargain. I'm not particularly fussed about the 'comfort' of the seats because at the end of the day it's a bus, it's not my living room or a luxury car. Plus, if you can get a copy of the Metro in the morning, you get a newspaper and a ride into town for £1(.10).
I think one of the biggest problems everyone has at the moment is that they expect public services to be on par with private companies. Take the NHS for example, people want the hospitals to be as good as BUPA, but it's a standard public service and not there for luxury.
If you want luxury and comfort on the ride to work get a high end taxi or drive into work, but if you want to spend £1 to get into town in the morning rush hour, then suck it up and be grateful for what you've got.

I wouldn't mind if it was that price.... but for me it's £1.80 to town. ridiculous prices!!
Greybeard 22-01-2008, 21:33 I think one of the biggest problems everyone has at the moment is that they expect public services to be on par with private companies.
The bus operators are private companies and their service to the public doesn't compare with the service we had when Sheffield Transport was the operator.
Bladesman 23-01-2008, 10:20 I must admit I have had barely any problems on a bus.
I will only say that it does seem there is a lack of space on between the seats on stagecoach buses. I am not a tall person and even my knee's scrape the back of the seats abit. As for the seats themselves I have always found them rather comfy and as for the condition of the seats they seem to be fine. I get more annoyed at other passengers or the odd bus driver than the actual state of the bus.
WhiteHawk 23-01-2008, 13:03 I wouldn't mind if it was that price.... but for me it's £1.80 to town. ridiculous prices!!
£2.60 I think my mate paid the other week from mine to town.

No, they're terrible.
Very true, I hear they offer an excellent service if you wish to use one of their buses after 8pm
Not in my experience they don't. As per my earlier post, I'm yet to see the 57/58 turn up on time when I've caught it. Even the very first one of the night has been 10 minutes late every time I've got it.
Is it just me or does everyone on SF think that Stagecoach can do no wrong?
From my experience they haven't.
The little rural bus from Stannington always turns up on time.... and trams... cant fault them.
First on the other hand.... don't turn up, or are late most of the time.
Once I waited 30 minutes in town for number 11 home. It finally came, but they was no change over driver, so we had to wait for the next bus. Next one came, but no change over driver for that one. Finally another came... that one didn't need to change drivers, so we got on that one.... AN HOUR I had waited in town to get home.
Now I use tram and car... home in 30 minutes :)
Now do you see why I prefer Stagecoach :loopy:

What about the Stagecoach 52 from Hillsborough? That's almost never on time.
All I'm saying is that Stagecoach are no better than First - their buses still get caught up in traffic, they are only in it for the money as well etc etc.

Thought late buses had been banned a few years back... in order to provide a public service.
ie
Do you want a bus after 11.45?
yes ----> well you can't, bugger off
No ------> thats the correct answer
I have to travel for an hour everyday on the bus and I've had no trouble with my rear end at all. The problem with you lot is that your backsides are just not big enough. Take some advice from me more cakes=more padding.

The way you put it, it sounded as rude as doing a loud fart at Church. ;)
mr_busdriver 10-02-2008, 18:45 On a serious note. you all need to stop moaning about the seats on buses.
After all, what makes you think you have a right to pass comments, on a business you don't run?
I will tell you what gives us the right -
the large amount of public money given to transport operators.
Bus Service Operators Grant
Subsidised services
The provision of supporting infrastructure funded publicly
First in South Yorkshire is a business that was built up by public money. It was then sold as Mainline and then taken over by First. Some of the employees are still in the local Govt pension scheme.
What gives these businesses the right to complain that they cannot run to time because the council does not do enough to keep them out of traffic jams? Who sets the timetables, bus companies or the Highway Authority?
On a serious note. you all need to stop moaning about the seats on buses.
After all, what makes you think you have a right to pass comments, on a business you don't run?

Freedom of speech is a human right. Anyway, why would people complain about something that wasn't satisfactory (whoops - looks like I've started a whole new topic off!)?

Your attitude is typical in all my experience and I rather suspect that it is shared by your employers.
BUS SERVICE: Let's delete bus and we are left with service. An alien concept it would appear.
I do have much sympathy with First drivers on issues of pay, conditions, etc and can understand the driver frustration I witness regularly. To be frank the transport system in this city is a joke.
It is run for the benefit of shareholders not users so what do you expect?
We want our busses back. What happenede to them?
