Hi,

I am trying to build a website and would like to start submitting to search engines, I know there are free ones, buut there are also ones one would pay to be listed on, what are these like? Is it worth it? I certainly want to be featured on google. Which are the best free ones? And any other info would be gratefully recieved as I am a total novice!

Janey.

You might want to include the tag <meta name="description" content = "describe your site here">
<meta name="keywords" content="keyowrds about the website"> then the search engines that scan on META tags will pick this up.

oops! Sorry!

The website - is it written in Front Page or similar? If so then somewhere there will be the option ti view the HTML. Then simply cut and paste the above entering something useful within the quotes, and make sure it is between the bit that says "<HTML>" and "<BODY>"....let me know if you need nay more help?

BTW: IT will take a while for the search engines to pick it up...usually 24-48 hours....

Hi,

I found www.bravenet.com very helpful and informative when I was just starting out with websites :)

You might find this page most useful http://resources.bravenet.com/articles/promotion/

Thanks, I have had a look on bravenet and it seems the best option would be to pay to be listed. So now the question is - do i pay the likes of google itself, or pay a company who lists me on numerous engines? I do so want to be on google ;-)))) hehe

You'd be best submitting to DMoz (http://www.dmoz.org/add.html) which is where Google and others get their web directory/data from - though it can take a while to get listed (every submitted site is checked by a human before inclusion)!

You can also submit directly to Google (http://www.google.com/addurl.html).

As to paid listings......

I've never seen the point in paying to be included in any web directory.

A good way to get Google to take a look @ your site/domain is to get some non-reciprocal links from a regularly Google spidered website.

The Meta tags should be placed between the <head> and </head> tags in the html source.

As far as i know the owner of our website just registered with Google and msn. msn updates a lot more regular than Google does but we have msn and Google bots crawling all over the website now anyway :).

Is this a business website or a personal / hobby one?

Oh yeah. Forgot....

MSN (until this year) got their info from dmoz;). The new MSN bots got a little too active on one or two of our sites during initial testing and spidering, that I had to ban the IP addresses (using a variety of methods) of all microsoft bots for the entire intial setting up of their database.

Strange that all the info (from our sites) is available from them (MSN)? Which suggests (to me) that they are still getting data from "other sources" to supplement their database.

Best thing to do is simply submit to Google & Dmoz (both are free) the post links to your site on relevant forums, bloggs etc (NRLs = higher rating = higher position).

Also, keep it (the website/domain) current, ie. update it regularly (this will also increase it's page ranking - higher position).
