View Full Version : The Greatest Film Scene.
Whether it be the sinking of the Titanic, The landings on the beaches in Saving Private Ryan or the clay moulding love scene in Ghost . . . .
Which scene sticks in your mind as the greatest ever?
When Michael Elphick (Boon) Destroys the church that the "Elephant man" had built out of matchsticks.
What a T***
missrabbit 17-02-2005, 12:20 I am a sucker for romantic films and my top films are
1. The Wedding Singer - The end on the plane with Billy Idol where Adam Sandler sings to Drew Barrymore and BI shoves her **** of a fiance in the loos.
2. Dodgeball - The final of the championship and Vince Vahgan puts on the blindfold
3. Fight Club - Where you sit and go "Oooohhhhh! so he IS Tyler Derdan
4. The Land Before Time - Where littlefoot helps Sarah but she doesn't want his help, then gets scared and cuddles up with Littlefoot and the gang.
5. Pretty In Pink - Duckie's Dance in the record shop
Usual Suspects ~ say no more
Lord of the Rings ~ Loads of scenes
I am Sam _ Film club
So many..........
Agent Gypo 17-02-2005, 12:43 Opening credits to Blade Runner; Los Angeles 2029...
Also from Blade Runner; origami unicorn scene which strongly hints at Deccard being a replicant, "It's too bad she wont live, but then again who does"
Blue Velvet; where Frank recites Roy Orbison to Geoffrey, "In dreams I walk with you... Look at my muscles, you like that..."
Waynes World- Bohemian Rhapsody ;)
Pulp Fiction- Trying to wake up Mia from her overdose at the dealers house when she snorts Vincent's Heroin (thinking it's cocaine). "Ok so I stab her with the needle like what, three times?"
Forest Gump- When he goes for a little run....

1) Lord of the rings- Most of the film
2) seeing yoda FINALLY fight- oh-my-god!!!
3) The initial scene when di caprio gets to the beach- breathtaking if only for the scenery!!
A_Partridge 17-02-2005, 14:00 The scene where mercutio is killed in romeo and juliet.
King Theoden's speech and charge in Return of the king.
Just about all of napoleon dynamite.
The helicopter attack while playing "Ride of the Valkyries" in Apocalypse Now.

Excellent! These are just from memory so forgive any mistakes...
Jodie: What's he looking for?
Vince: I dunno, some book.
Jodie: (shouting) What are you lookin for?
Lance: A little, black medical book. It's like a-a textbook they give the nurses.
Jodie: I haven't seen no book.
Lance: Well... trust me I have one.
Jodie: Well if it's so important why didn't you keep it with the shot?
Lance: I DUNNO! STOP BOTHERING ME!
And my favourite exchange:
Vince: A black magic marker. You got it?
Jodie: What?
Vince: A Black magic marker... A FELT PEN! A ****** BLACK MAGIC MARKER!!
Brilliant!
The scene in True Romance with Clifford Worley (Dennis Hopper) and Vincenzo Coccotti (Christopher Walken) is a fantastic scene.
Cifford: See you, you're part... eggplant
Vincenzo: And you're a cantelope!
Another great scene is with Alabama and Virgil in the hotel room. A great piece of cinema - especially the original, uncut version.
Virgil:Now I do it just to watch their ***** expressions change.
lol jack
Lance:"You're gonna give her the shot, the day that I bring some drugged up b*tch to your house I'll give her the shot!"
Lickable 17-02-2005, 15:09 Opening scene to A night at the Roxbury
jackthedog 17-02-2005, 15:27 Leon. The scene on the landing as Matilda arrives back with the groceries to find Stansfield and his men have paid her father a visit.
It's Leon's dilemma - if he opens the door his life will change forever. But he just can't leave her stood on the landing.
Great scene.
What about the opening scene in Mission Impossible 2 where Tom Cruise is hanging off that cliff edge . . . allegedly he really did that too?????

Totally agree with you on those scenes my man.
A fellow Tarantino fan
Very much depends upon the mood I'm in....
At the moment :
The scene at the end of Patton when he's basically been fired and he's walking his dog across some fields. There's a voice over, which ends up with the words 'all glory is fleeting.' Brilliant.
The piece in 'Field of Dreams' where the young version of the Burt Lancaster character steps out of the baseball diamond and becomes the old doctor again in order to save the little girl's life.
In Casablanca where the French and the Germans duel with patriotic songs in Rick's Bar.
The monologue at the beginning of 'Jerry Maguire', up to the point where Jerry tries to retrieve the document he's written from the in-boxes of his colleagues...and ails...:)
But so, so many great moment!
Joe
Bring out the gimp . . .
But the Gimp's sleepin'
Well, I guess you just go have to wake him up now!
You did What!!!
I just shot Marvin in the face man, you must've gone over a bump or sumthin'.
The bit that always gets me though is when John Travolta gets shot in Butch's apartment - I always want to shout 'NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!'
Hmm,
"Nobody puts Baby in a corner." Dirty Dancing - did you need to ask?!
Shrek - lots of scenes. In particular;
"Can we shave him?!" Cat to Shrek when Donkey passes out. (Or was it the other way round?)
The American style police chase when they are in pursuit of a white mustang...
Oh, and at the beginning of fight club when whatsherface tells Mr Pitt she wants to have his abortion. (Ooh, perhaps a bit risky; no offence anyone).
WallBuilder 17-02-2005, 18:35 The Day the Earth Stood Still... The bit when the saucer opens and Klaatu appears, amazing effectsfor it's time
The Italian Job... The mini's in the big sewer rolling all over the place
An American Werewolf in London... Not the bit when he turns into a wolf but the bit when he wakes up in London Zoo and has to find something to cover his embarassment.
Bambi... When Thumper introduces him to ice
For sheer electricity [albeit of a negative kind], Joe Pesci's scene in the restaurant with Ray Liotta in Goodfellas. Pesci's gangster psychopath takes Liotta's character "the wrong way". The sudden change of mood, and the terrifying way Pesci plays the part;"Why am I funny? Am I here just to entertain you? I want you to tell me why the f**k I am funny" etc, makes this a great scene. The viewer is not quite sure whether Pesci's character is about to blow his friend's brains out. Luckily, Liotta's character manages to defuse things by pretending that he knows Pesci's character is joking. We are left knowing how very, very close to death Liotta's character was, and how profoundly warped and dangerous Pesci's little psycho really is. Wonderful...
Lickable 18-02-2005, 07:57 Ring - Tartan Films edition
When the girl climbs out of the tv for the first time.
The bit in Alien when they are chasing it through the air conditioning pipes and closing each section behind him, you know it's going to get him but you're not sure when.
Infact, most of Alien, it still scares me now.

Funny? Funny how? Funny like a clown? Like I'm here to amuse you?!
Swan_Vesta 18-02-2005, 10:53 The final scene from Full metal jacket where the grunts are patrolling through the ransacked city singing the theme tune to the Mickey Mouse fanclub............ all together now M I C - K E Y M O U S E!
From Get Carter when Michael Caine gives the chap who was in Corrie a slap "You're a big man but you're out of shape, with me it's a full time job"
But the most emotive is when the chopper is pulling away from the firefight in Platoon and Chris sees Elias trying desperately to escape the enemy troops before falling to his knees waiting to be overrun by the advancing troops.
Dr Zhivago, my favourite film...the final tramcar scene, so sad and yet such a perfect ending to the film.
Then there's every line in The Princess Bride:
Inigo: I have a confession; I am not left-handed.
The Man in Black: Neither am I!
Any scene from Goodfellas. The best ones being:
"funny how" (see earlier posts)
"now go home and get your f****n shine box" - Billy Batts
"the hoof, the hoof" - De Niro
But my favourite is De Niro stood smoking his fat cigar at the end of the bar pretending to be in conversation (though there's no speech just that brilliant music playing over the top - what is that?) but he keeps glancing at Morrie who he's going to kill simply for wanting his fair share of the heist money. De Niro's laughing but his eyes are deadly - classic De Niro!!
alchresearch 18-02-2005, 19:43 The Film: Shawshank Redemption
The scene: The moment the warden throws Dufrane's rocks around and one goes straight through the picture of Rita Hayworth!
The ones I can think of at the moment and in no particular order:
1- Saving Private Ryan- the D-day landings
2- Deer Hunter- Russian Roullette in the jungle
3- Goodfellas- "How the f*** do I amuse you?"
4- Platoon- The village scene where the old woman gets shot.
5- Life of Brian- the stoning scene: "right, who threw that?!"
crowefan 19-02-2005, 09:38 EASY EASY EASY

4 THE LAST SCENE IN CENTRAL STATION, WHERE THE OLD WOMAN SAYS GOODBYE TO THE BRAZILIAN ORPHAN
5 BETH (CLAIRE DANES) RECIEVING THE PIANO IN LITTLE WOMEN...SOB SOB
6 BETTE DAVIS BRANDISHING A CELERY STICK WHICH SHE BITES IN ALL ABOUT EVE.

15 THE FINAL SEQUENCE IN SHINDLER'S LIST, WHERE THE REAL SURVIVORS AND THEIR ACTOR COUNTERPARTS MEET.
16.A TINY SCENE WHERE LISA KUDROW LOOKS AT HER FRIEND AT THE END OF THE OPPOSITE OF SEX ( I CRY EVERYTIME, AS IT SUMMS UP LOSS AND PAIN OF THE ENTIRE FILM.
17.THE WOLF ATTACK IN BEAUTY AND THE BEAST
18.THE MUSICAL MAIN THEME OF THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN
19. AMILEE CRYING WHEN ALONE IN AMILEE
20. I AM SPARTACUS! IN SPARTICUS
I ENJOYED THAT!!!!
16.
Jack the Dog,
Glad you like Goodfellas. I also like the scene where a black guy about to be murdered by the shovel-wielding, gun-toting crew, asks "Did you bring coffee" [he is in a hotel room]. "What do you think I am, the f***ING CATERER!", replies Pesci's character...
PaulTansley 20-02-2005, 15:18 The final scene in Gladiator because Hans Zimmer's music does the business.
Also a film I watched the other day starring Clint Eastwood called Million dollar baby.

How was it ? it's up for oscar. hope it takes all, i like Hillary Plank
and the rest of that cast.
limpetboy 20-02-2005, 18:50 emm,
Andy Dufreyne (sp.?) standing in the sewer outlet in Shawshank Redemption
Goodfellas - The steadicam scence when they go through the restaurant to their tables - a lesson in how films should be made
Matrix - when Neo and Trinity go in to the building to get Morpheus back, and the bit before - we're gonna need guns, lots of guns.
Every last second of the Green Mile
Dogma - At the end when Alanis Morrisette has unleashed her voice and Jay stands up 'what the **** happened? who the *** is she' and etc. Laugh? I nearly die everytime.
The end of Usual Suspects, 'and like that, he's gone'
And probably more
American Beauty - bit at the end when Lester Burnhams life is flashing before him..
True Romance - Hopper Vs Walken in the caravan
The Beach - the first time they see the beach and when they set the lanterns off...
Human Traffic - the party conversation where they think they've discovered something momentus (been there myself many times)
Mulholland Drive - when it switches back to reality and you have to start piecing what you (think you) know together again!

Oh my god - I forgot about the Lobby scene!
"Could you please remove any metal items you're carrying - keys, loose change...
Holy ****"
The best action scene ever I reckon - like the most beautifully constructed dance sequence ever. But with copius amounts of bullets flying everywhere.
All to Propellerheads awesome 'Spybreak'! A visual treat if ever there was one!
Then the minigun in the helicopter and the helicopter crash - I sit there with a huge grin on my face for the entire 15 or so minutes of that little lot everytime I see that film! Gives me goosebumps!
jackthedog 21-02-2005, 08:10 As for comedy, I don't think you can beat Jay and Silent Bob in the Mooby's restaraunt replying to moviepoopshoot.com...
YOU ARE THE ONES WHO ARE THE B*** LICKERS...
Troy,
The music that accompanies De Niro's cigar-smoking scene, in which his sidelong glances at Morrie communicate a murderous desire [he is almost like a bird of prey here] is 'The Sunshine of your Love' by Cream. All the best.
Big Lebowski..One of the many bowling alley scenes
"Over the line. Mark it Zero!!"
"Smokey, this is not Nam, this is bowling. There are rules."
DanSumption 26-02-2005, 14:51 So many, but at the moment it's got to be the end of Fitzcarraldo: Klaus Kinski standing on top of the boat which is bashed to bits and listing badly, he's wearing his white suit and his wide-brimmed hat, standing smoking the biggest cigar in the world and smiling a smile that shows all the hardship he's been through, seeing his dream destroyed, but now he's managed to realise his dream albeit on a smaller scale. The pig in the velvet chair. The orchestra spilling from every part of the boat. The opera singers wailing from the fake tower on top of the boat. And all the crowds along the banks of the Amazon, cheering them on.
I used to hate opera until I saw that film. Now it moves me to tears.
The car chase at the end of the original gone in 60seconds...............awsome!!
I sadly don't have time to read all the posts but i agree with anyone who said The Usual Suspects (of coarse the ending!).
UnkleBob 27-02-2005, 20:29 In the Japanese film, Ring, when Sadako comes out of the telly all twisted and jerky...Made my skin crawl, have a look for this film if you like proper Horror!
rudedude1979 28-02-2005, 13:02 "Luke, I am your father!"
and the big shoot out at the end of scarface.
Almost every scene in the first two Godfather films (dont even mention the third one!)
One scene will forever be stuck inside my head. If you ever saw the movie "Ghost Ship" you will know what I mean. At the beginning of the movie, the way that the passengers and the crew members died! That would be one h*ll of a way to die!!! I shutter everytime I think of that!!

I love the scene around the family dinner table in Part 2 where Don Vito is on his way while the others sit around arguing. It's fantastic.
Apparently they were supposed to get Brando back but he pulled out at the last minute, so he never got to be in the scene.
Instead, they cut just as he would have entered the scene. The great thing is, you feel his presence - He's not even arrived, but the anticipation of seeing him again is so strong. The fact that you don't stay long enough to see him walk through the door doesn't matter.
Such a powerful character, he didn't even need to show to do his job! Wonderful!
The scene in Seven where they find that guy tied to the bed, then they realise he has been there for a year, and they find all the photos. That film was disturbing, but great to watch.
fleecemeece 01-03-2005, 14:43 Once Upon A Time In The West- the opening scene and the showdown between Henry Fonda and Charles Bronson- classic cinema history.
crowefan 02-03-2005, 18:43 hummmmmmmmmmmmm
another thought
the opening scene of the magnificent seven.oh what music
fleecemeece 03-03-2005, 08:57 I haven't seen that one yet, I hope to rent it soon, I like a good western :)
I'd agree with any scene from Pulp Fiction (cos it's my favourite film) or the lobby scene in the Matrix and the "Freeway" chase scene in Matrix Reloaded.
But one scene that I found absolutely hilarious was in Austin Powers when he's trying to turn the yellow buggy thing around in the narrow corridor.. For some reason that scene just made me laugh until I cried! It's just so silly! I wouldn't say it's the greatest ever film scene but it definately sticks in my mind cos I found it so funny.
I dont know if anyones mentioned it but what about the scene in Alien - when the baby alien pops out of the guy's stomach! :gag:
All this talk of Ghostbusters 3 has reminded me of the first ghost scene in Ghostbusters 1 - in the library vault under the building.
I remember watching it in the cinema as a youngster and being petrified of the old ghost woman who reading a book and then blasts out into a horrible skeleton-type-thing!!:o :D
JFKvsNixon 30-07-2005, 04:34 I agree with most of the above, i have to admit that the Austin powers scene does make me laugh as well.
One of my favourite scenes is the Colonel Kilgore scene from apocalypse now
"I love the smell of napalm in the morning" and "charly can't surf"

Ah! I loved the first Ghostbusters movie!
When Peter Venkman (Bill Murray) asks the old ghost woman, "where are you from?" "Originally".
The Big Lebowski, when the two thugs realize they've broken into the house of the wrong Jeffrey Lebowski.
First thug looks around at the squalid mess and cramped apartment, and asks, "Hey Wu?'" "Isn't this guy supposed to be a millionaire?"
:) Sierra
andy1702 30-07-2005, 15:39 It just has to be the Deli scene from When Harry Met Sally with the classic "I'll have what she's having!" line. It creases me up every time.
If you've been asleep for the last 20 years or so and don't know what I'm talking about, go get the video now. You won't regret it!
Also.....
The scene with the female session singer in Swingshift. Hang on, haven't I seen her somewhere before?;)

What about the plane diving towards earth in 'Castaway'. That bit always makes me feel ill.
More of a sequence than a scene, but my vote is for the awesome battle at Minas Tirith in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of The King. There's so many points that stand out - Merry & Eowyn's encounter with the Lord of the Nazgul, Aragorn leaping out of the Corsairs' ship with his ghost army, Legolas bringing down the Oliphaunt, Gandalf fending off the Nagul with the light of his staff - loads n loads of inspired brilliance.
BrainThrust 30-07-2005, 22:56 another reccomendation for the opening sequnce to 'Once upon a time in the west'
Sheer cinematic pefection, edited perfectly to pace the suspense, doesn't give much away plotwise but it gives detailed non verbal information about the hitmen.
Plus it ends with a gun fight, uses a harmonica, and has some of the most terse but quotable lines
"We're one horse short"
"No... you brought two too many"
Genius
Wilf
The greatest film scene for me as to be the end credits of castaway..what a boring film that was.
