Does anybody know what all the noise coming from the West One Development is about this morning? It's been going on for over 2 hours now, and really starting to do my head in!

Pile driving?

What sort of noise?

No offence, but it sounds like the old "I like living in the city centre but I don't like the inevitable inconveniences involved" story.

I was just going to say "It's the vibrant heartbeat of the city".

Yes maybe we should form a group of vigilantes and go round telling builders to work quietly in case someone is trying to get some beauty sleep....

That's the plan then. Unless, someone did know what the noise is, and could just tell the person that asked.

Hmmm. Plan A would probably be easier to organise... :D

Well, and I know its a bit radical and daring, maybe the person who raised the issue (bearing in mind they are probably not that far from the emanation of said noise) maybe they are in a better position to find out the answer than us internet geeky types who could be anywhere.

I propose we go and investigate, there are bound to be builders involved :)

Thank you all so much for your (not very helpful) replies. No, I do not live in the city centre, but I do work here. I asked as I thought that somebody that lives in or works near the complex might know what was going on. I won't trouble you next time!

My guess would be something happening on the new Sinclairs site. Not sure you'd be able to spot the Village People though!

You still haven't told us what kind of noise it was. We could be more helpful with more information.

There is a renovation type thing going on in the main 'courtyard' where revolution and east one are.

Hope this helps!

Did it sound like someone gasping "How much!, for one bedroom!" followed by the sound of someone hitting laminate flooring ?

I'll ask Poppins. She may be able to help, if you're too far away to look yourself :D

Did you also let him know that reports have shown that the pope is suspected of being catholic and some very early reports of a bear having been seen defacating near a wooded area have come in?

Well, thank goodness is all I can say. There simply aren't enough city centre apartments around. :(

absolutely, the dearth of city centre apartments is what's killing Sheffield at the moment, they are the way forward and the future....

The problem with flats is that they are designed for privacy. This allows people to ignore their neighbours. As they don't know their neighbours, they feel no obligation to consider them when eg choosing a volume setting on the stereo, parking their car, clattering down the corridor.

The ideal of apartment living descends into a cloud of intolerance and people begin to move out, and possibly rent out. The tennants have an even lesser sense of responsibility towards their neighbours and the spiral has begun.

Property prices drop. More units are rented out awaiting market recovery.

Until flats are designed for more social living, there will always be a cycle they go through.

Not according to my mate who can hear everything his neighbour does 'cause the walls are so thin.

Think you have missed the point Nick. What strix is saying is that because you can't see the neighbours and dont have any interaction with them some people don't respect them.

When I was a student in Manchester I lived in a student flat in a university-owned flats complex. These flats reputedly only had brieze blocks between the individual flats, never mind the individual rooms.

Privacy, what privacy?

On her first day living there, a flatmate of mine sneezed in her room, and was horrified when a bloke's voice from the next-door flat said 'Bless you!' :o

It always amuses me when i see references to 'luxury apartment-living' - I wouldn't consider it luxury unless they have EXCELLENT sound-proofing!!
