I have been using this new organic friut & veg delivery service for about 4 months, I have a small veg box £6.50 ( mushrooms, potatos, brocolli, onions and two of the biggest carrots on earth) contents vary every week but I specify what I would like. The taste and colour of the veg is so different to what I used to buy and the kids love collecting the box (from outside in a hut) examining the contents and deciding what to eat first. A friend recommended Giant Peach to me and I now order from them every week (I used to buy regular veg) I thought I would share them with all you out there. The Giant Peach Halfway 0114 2476903

Do you know if you can get boxes without potatoes? (I'm not being picky, honest! Some box-schemes let you opt-out of spuds)

Yes you can pick what you like or dislike. They pack your box to suit.

How varied are the contents? is it generally just basic fare, or do you get some odd balls thrown in too?

I'm looking for a scheme like this and thier prices seem very reasonable, and of the quantities are like they show on the website then it looks like it could be what I am looking for. However, it would be nice to have a good variety of veg and fruit.

I used to have an Abel and Cole delivery and then I found out what a big company they are and where the food comes from.

So to reduce my food miles further I now use a Sheffield based company who source from more local farms instead - http://www.wildstarfood.com/

So far they have been great and I love the fact that our eggs now come from Whirlow Hall farm, a local farm where i used to go for visits as a kid.

Have to agree that abel and co are very good, however I did find on quite a few occasions that they kept substituting items for things that I had requested not to have.

The products are exactly as they look on the website. One week i had to phone them to comment on the brocolli/cauliflower it was like art work - a pointed cauliflower green because of the lack of chemicals added!! Their products are fantastic and are sourced locally so green all round. They offer a very wide range of fruit and veg. At christmas i had an amazing hamper from them with cheese ,jams, dates etc it was excellent value for money as always.

Just looked at the Wildstar site. It has such local products as olive oil, pomegranate juice and chocolates. Where in the locality do we grow cocoa, pomegranates, or olives?

The problem with companies like Abel & Cole is that all they do is organic, usually from the UK for the veg. But it can come from anywhere in the UK. They have distribution centres like supermarkets so food is travelling all over the country before getting to you.

I have just started up with a new box scheme in the Sheffield area, we buy as much local food as possible, and when it's not local we ensure it is from as close as possible. All our fruit is from Europe. None of our produce is air freighted!

The company is White Rose Produce (www.whiteroseproduce.co.uk)

I think that if you tried to live off local food, i.e) food from Great Britian then you would have a very limited diet - of vegtables, bread and meat.

This country has been trading around the world for hundreds of years and i think that as long as the produce is sourced ethically and environmental issues are a major concern of the producer then its ok.

I do think if we can buy a product from this country then we should as the taste of the product should be better as it will not have travelled for many miles, (well at least in theory)

Anyone use these still? I used them a year or so ago, but would like to use them again if they're still the same quality/service!

Hi, i was just wondering if your pointy broccoli/cauliflower that was green was actually a romanesco. This is an old species of cauliflower that is always green with or without chemicals.

This is just a variety of cauli you can get not due to lack of chemicals, the same way you can get purple carrots etc.

I do like these scemes but its very expensive, regarding fruit and veg I grow alot myself and this year we are trying to go half of the year without having to buy.

We will have enough onions and spuds for a full year though (as long as the crops dont get hit by a disease.)

Much tastier to grow your own if you have the space, and its a great hobby.
