View Full Version : Autism care in Sheffield
Does anybody have any experience of companies in Sheffield offering care for autistic people? I understand there are a number of homes offering various degrees of support. Are there any that pople can recommend or advise to avoid?
puddinburner 15-01-2008, 12:09 Have you tried Sheffield social services? Mind you they were involved with my daughter from the age of fourteen or so. Tried everything in the book to get to the bottom of her probs but it was'nt until she'd left home and moved down to Reading that They're social services discovered she has Aspergers syndrome. Which is a form of autism.....too flaming late, cos she was over sixteen by then, so not illegible.
I can recommend Leonard Cheshire Home Care, they don't specialise in autism but they've been very good with me since I moved into the Flat nearly 18 months ago.
Also, Autism Plus aren't bad, their main problem is lack of staff really... They used to be based on the Vikinglea estate on the Manor but they moved just before Christmas last year to premises near the Don Valley Tram stop, have a look at their web site (http://www.autismplus.org) for more details, I was with them when they were called Thorne House Services for Autism, I only left cos I fell out with one of the staff, and there were also a few other issues which I can't go into for personal and legal reasons.
you need to get a list of all domicillary service providers from the local authority and then ring round a few and ask fi you can go and visit them for a chat about what service you need and if thats what they can provide. You need to think about if its 24hrs care or just a few hrs a week, also is it in the person's own home or do they want to live with other people.
i do work in this field for one of the countries largest service provider for people with learning difficulties and would be happy to help you find the right support. this does not mean that i am looking for more work for us, i just want to make sure you end up with the right advice.

Whoever told you she is ineligible for support because she's over 16 is clueless, and I would challenge the decision, I wasn't diagnosed with asperger's till I was 23 (I will be 32 in April this year) and got support and a named social worker with very few problems.
samstar999 06-02-2008, 13:19 I don't know about actual care facilities, but you might find this interesting:

Parents can use the SHARE group that they run to, er, share information etc
Autism Plus have recently opened a new Resource Centre in Sheffield and offer a range of services. We are rated as excellent by CSCI (Care standards commission)- you can read our inspection report on their website. You can also also check out our website for more info - www.autismplus.org
Yellowrose 09-03-2008, 17:18 Rich (and anyone else who wants to join in) I need your help. I have tried to PM rich but his box is full.
I have a 21 year old daughter who I suspect has Aspergers. We have had problems all the way through school but it has just occurred to me that this might be why she is the way she is. Could you give me any information on how to get a diagnosis please? I would also be grateful if you could help to start a discussion with her on the subject. She just shuts down. I think I will also have difficulty getting her to the doctors.
What I'd do is Google asperger's, print off everything you can on the subject, and take it to your Doctor explaining that you think this criteria fits your Daughter. If your Doc isn't a Quack, he should acknowledge it and recommend your Daughter for further tests to determine whether or not she has it, which will probably include an ECG/MRI (brain scan). Just try and avoid having to go to the Northern General for it if possible, because they did my scan, and then proceeded to lose the results! :loopy:
Good luck anyway.
And I have space for PMs if you want to message me.

What makes you think she may have Asperger's?
Yellowrose 09-03-2008, 19:48 Happy hippy: If you would like to PM me I can reply, I'd prefer not to display all her symptoms on a public forum.
Rich, thanks. I have googled it many times, and printed a few things off. I have PM'd you.

Yellowrose 10-03-2008, 10:12 If anyone can recommend a specific NHS consultant in Sheffield who works with people with Aspergers/Autistic Spectrum Disorder who would be good to see for a diagnosis, please let me know.
Also try Autism Plus (http://www.autismplus.org) they're always getting new clients and are good, but constantly short staffed.
If anyone can recommend a specific NHS consultant in Sheffield who works with people with Aspergers/Autistic Spectrum Disorder who would be good to see for a diagnosis, please let me know.
I'd recommend contacting St George's Hospital and see if you can see Prof Digby Tantum, he is an expert in the field of autism and has helped me and my family with loads of stuff.
Also, if your Daughter needs to see a Counsellor ever, Sue Prestwood, also at St George's is excellent, I've been seeing her for years.
As for the diagnosis, I was diagnosed in 1999 by Dr Jadresic at the Northern General, not sure if she's still there, might be worth asking.

Hi Yellowrose,
To the best of my knowledge there is only one place in sheffield that can diagnose Aspergers (in adults).
Here it is.

Hi Rich,
You will be pleased to hear that a scan is no longer required for an AS diagnoses. This certainly wasnt part of my daughters assessment (much to my relieve :) ) at Ryegate last year. Not 100% sure that its the same with adults, but i wouldnt imagine it to be much differant.

Yellowrose 10-03-2008, 20:12 Thanks once again to everyone else for all the information.
I have read it once, and need to read and digest again. Sometimes I read something and think, yes, she fits the criteria, then I will read another article and think, Im not so sure now. I have to be very careful how I handle it with her too.

I was diagnosed with asperger's when I was 23 (I'll be 32 3 weeks next Monday), I'd be happy to talk to you on the subject.
Send me a PM or my email address is in my profile.

espadrille 14-03-2008, 05:44 Hi
I have a diagnosis of atypical Aspergers and I have a son on the spectrum and have researched the condition extensively over the last 3 years. As I have so much knowledge and experience from a personal point of view, I have decided to start up my own business called the Aspergers Consultancy.I will be offering group presentations to professionals who either work with people with Aspergers Syndrome, or to groups of people who have been diagnosed with it.I have just had 2 queries from members of the forum wanting to know if I can give 1 to 1 support to get people in to work. This is something I did not think off as I had intended to make a charge that was appropriate for organisations such as the NHS and the department for work and pensions, who have an agenda to get people in to work and , people who have aspergers often find it hard to get in to work.Plese post a reply if you think you may be interested in the service. Thanks
Yellowrose 14-03-2008, 20:37 Hello again everyone, I just want to share some good news with you.
I have been to the doctors today and she agreed it was likely from chatting to us that our daughter has Asperger's. She has referred us on to a psychiatrist to ask for a tertiary referral to the Sheffield Aspergers Syndrome Service.
At the same time I had written to someone at Sheffield Hallam and asking for advice. He will actually come and see us and do the preliminary work and pass her on to a consultant directly who can diagnose Aspergers.
Thanks everyone for all your input. It feels like we have had a breakthrough. Just having the GP agree with me after talking to my daughter was a huge relief. She was actually annoyed it hadn't been picked up earlier.

Thank you for pointing this out, should shut a few clueless Daily Mail readers up on here.
Yellowrose 15-03-2008, 08:13 I have seen your many posts on the subject of getting work, Rich. I know my daughter hasnt had the diagnosis yet, but I can see that it would be very difficult for someone like her to get work. Our doctor implied that given support she might be able to find somewhere she fitted and she would make a good employee if the type of work and the type of environment were right. I think the trouble is, most employers just cant be bothered. They think it will be extra work for them and they overlook it. They also assume, quite wrongly maybe, that if someone has any sort of diagnosis, they will take time off sick. I came upon this myself and my problems are of a physical nature.
I think you should be congratulated that you still keep trying to look for work because it must be very off putting for you.
espadrille 16-03-2008, 14:07 I know that it is hard to get work if you have a diagnosis of Aspergers, but i have 2 diiferent experiences of disclosing my disability to employers and also not disclosing it to employers and I now feel that there were advantages and disadvantages to both. Before I had the diagnosis, i worked for several employers, of which was the old NCB, then British Coal, and also Nat West Bank.I did have some problems with concentrating and found after I had had my son, that going to work seemed less of a priority and looking after my family became more important. However, in the last 2 jobs that I have had, both in the voluntary sector, the employers were both told about my difficulty and were very understanding about it, once they got to know more about it.I do feel that disclosing it at the end of the interview is the best time, after all, providing that you meet the selection criteria, the employer has to give you an interview if they have displayed the positive about disabled people ticks on the letters. So dont despair, there is hope.
blue-kat 16-03-2008, 14:23 have you heard of bridge employment ?
http://www.bridgeemployment.org.uk/index.html
Bridge Employment is a supported employment agency
which provides support for people with disabilities and mental health problems
in finding and keeping employment.
espadrille 16-03-2008, 14:40 Yes, they are really good at getting you some support. They are based in the Zest Centre at Upperthorpe
Yellowrose 16-03-2008, 17:27 At the moment, my daughter won't talk about getting a job. I get the impression she doesnt want to because she cant cope with being amongst other people. When the doctor said her future would be a whole lot brighter when she got support to help her find a career I saw her do her "switch off" thing. Very subtle, but Ive had years to spot it.
I hope that someone can help her self esteem and confidence so she actually wants to go out and get a job. I can understand now why she would be happier at home for the time being.
Yellowrose 17-03-2008, 10:19 Ive already asked blue-kat about this, but I thought I would ask all of you too.
Is it true that not all agencies accept a private diagnosis of AS, and if you have one you still have to go through the NHS diagnosis?
espadrille 17-03-2008, 10:34 I did get a NHS diagnosis for myself and I dont see whay you should have to pay for one when it should be available on the NHS.You have a right to get this done with Digby Tantem, the leading authority on diagnosis
blue-kat 17-03-2008, 11:15 you shouldn't have to go private, and in an ideal sitaution kids with possible ASDs would be assessed early, and there wouldn't be long and complicated referral processes.
My son's private diagnosis was accepted by official bodies. It was great to be able to access help ASAP. His fuller NHS diagnosis expanded on the initial private diagnosis a year later.
Yellowrose 17-03-2008, 11:18 I know we are entitled to an NHS diagnosis, but as I understand the process in Sheffield is very long winded and will involve my daughter seeing different people, the first referral being to one of the "team" psychiatrists who covers our sector of the city. You have to see them before you see Digby Tantam's team. The psychiatrist refers you to his team. I understand at the moment Digby Tantam is on a sabbatical though.
My post of 14-03-2008, 09:37 PM refers.
blue-kat 17-03-2008, 11:18 ... won't talk about getting a job. ... I saw her do her "switch off" thing.
I hope that someone can help her self esteem and confidence so she actually wants to go out and get a job. I can understand now why she would be happier at home for the time being.
is self employment an option?
or a job that involves working on your own for periods of time?
Yellowrose 17-03-2008, 11:21 is self employment an option?
or a job that involves working on your own for periods of time?
Yes. She has mentioned setting up her own business but lacks the organisational skills and of course the capital. She would like to make jewelry.
blue-kat, I have PM'd you about the diagnosis.
espadrille 17-03-2008, 11:31 How old is your daughter Yellow Rose?
Yellowrose 17-03-2008, 12:18 She is 21.
I could start my own IT Company, that's how Bill Gates started Microsoft, he has asperger's and his dominating interest was computers, it was this that drove him to start MS and until a couple of years ago he was the richest man in the known galaxy.
Yellowrose 17-03-2008, 16:44 I didn't know Bill Gates has Asperger's. Im sure there are lots of other famous people who do.
See list below:

Yellowrose 18-03-2008, 17:44 I apologise if you already know about this, but I have just discovered this forum:
http://www.asd-forum.org.uk
I thought I'd revive this old thread because I thought although the initial info is still good and valid, I might add a few more to the mix.
http://www.autisticnet.com/
A new site dedicated to people that suffer with autism, literally new (current population me (and whoever made the site).
It looks very promising.
http://blip.tv/file/2713809
After personal experiences with members of the DWP both in life, on the phone and in paperwork, I can honestly say that the Sheffield branch definitely needs more training on Autism Spectrum Disorder from management down.
I'm going to take up the campaign and write an email to my MP.
