View Full Version : Have you been to Prague? LuckyR 16-02-2005, 20:36 anyone know anywhere worth visiting in prague? im off there tommorrow, anyone want to tell me of those places they found tucked away which are worth a trip PENGUIN 16-02-2005, 20:43 A tip for you, make sure you are well covered, I heard its been -7 recently. LordChaverly 16-02-2005, 20:58 The museum of Communism is well worth a visit. Its in the city centre, above MacDonalds and next to the casino. If you like classical music you will be in your element. There are probably more musical events events in prague than any where else. The castle area is a must also. You will have a good time though just wandering around. Food and drinks are still very cheap (hence its growing reputation as the stag party capital of Europe). Watch out for the pickpockets though. And ignore anyone on the street offering to give you a good deal on changing money. Internetowl 16-02-2005, 21:46 also watch out for taxi drivers ripping you off....they are known for it - public transport is fine and cheap.. Ems30 16-02-2005, 21:58 I've just come back from Prague actually, we went for this school thing. Came back on Monday, it was pretty cold but there was some good stuff there, loads of McDonalds though! The castle area was nice, and if your looking for somewhere to eat theres a very nice pizza place in the town centre, I can't remember what its called but its on the main street with the statue of the horse. Hope that helps anyway... mega_monty 16-02-2005, 22:01 Originally posted by LordChaverly hence its growing reputation as the stag party capital of Europe Been invited to a stag party there later on this year and wondered what its like :D stryker 16-02-2005, 22:28 mates been if you are big on drinking its cheap drink and food.... LuckyR 16-02-2005, 22:33 going there for a 21st so im sure il enjoy the nightlife but il certainly be exploring the cities attractions during the day venger 17-02-2005, 02:25 Also massive jazz scene. Why not get a travel guide from the central library, very useful indeed. harrietgirl 17-02-2005, 08:36 Hey, I went to Prague last year, it's a beautiful city. My tip would be to go see the Astronomical Clock in the old town square, and St Charles Bridge. Petrin Hill is quite nice if a mini eiffel tower and mirror maze is your thing! Also try the beer as it is so unbelievable cheap! Apparently the Czech Republic is the biggest beer drinking population in the world! When I went in september they had paddle boats you could hire on the river for a few quid, I don't know if they run in the winter months though. Have a great time! It's a bit of an anti climax, is the astronomical clock, so I wouldn't spend too long in the cold waiting for it to do its thing! Watch out on the Charles Bridge for any pickpockets... Not sure how busy it is at this time of year, but in the summer months its chocca and a haven for theives... So watch your purse! Also, beware the smooth talking waiters! With a main course, sometimes you only get the meat, and extra veggies and side dishes can be extra. However, when the charming waiter or waitress is taking your order, they prompt you for the extras but don't tell you it will cost more! The best food I had there was at Hacienda Mexicana... Its a bit off the neaten track, it's near the Florence tube station. It you like steak its to die for and their cocktails are brilliant. One things for sure, even if the weather is cold, you should never be too chilly... The food is really hearty and guarranteed to keep you warm inside all day! If you get chance, a bus ride of about two hours will take you to a little town called Cesky Krumlov... It's really pretty, with a river meandering through the middle of it that you can raft down in the summer, complete with flumes! Have a fabulous holiday... Like all cities there are risks, but if you're sensible then there's no reason for you not to have a brilliant time! Have a great time! Did you see the swan boat that looked like it had escaped from Alton Towers??!! When we went, that was the boat all the Brits wanted to go in! chalicefc3 18-02-2005, 00:18 Prague, or Praha as is known by locals is well worthy of a visit. Im not all that clued up on my history so forgive my lack of knowledge, but despite its split from Slovakia - in my opinion, i think that it still retains a lot of communist values.....a little creepy compared to the safety blanket lifestyle that we are all used to (you'll know what i mean if you've been) When i went there were soldiers with guns stood by tanks, just below the national museum. Oh yeah, there were the taxi drivers in Praha 3 that tried to rip us off with a trip to Praha 2 district. That said, the rest of it was fantastic. I went during October 2002, when halloween was on over here. Unfortunately, they don't celebrate halloween in Prague but they do try and make an effort with the visitors (pumpkins etc). Well worthy of a visit to the Old Town, where you will find the Astronomical clock (bit boring but its something to say you've seen), lots of Parisian-style cafés etc. Also worth a look is the house of horrors, and i think there is a 'deadly creatures' museum just next door if i remember rightly. I would suggest organising a ghost trip around the old town, which adds to the whole mystique of the place - especially with the gothic spires!! Definitely the choice place to eat or drink in my opinion. If you can summon the energy - take a hike to the Castle. From here you can see all over Prague, and if you make out a funky skyscraper with a silver orb near to the top (i've been informed it used to act as blocker against western radio signals being received in the communist east) New Town is more like western europe with its high street of shops like C&A, H&M, and even Tesco's! Wenseslas Square is the place to explore - which becomes lively at night, usually the stag do's and drunk brits. Loads of tourists here, and with tourists you'll get the drug dealers, prostitutes and thieves so be really careful. Charles Bridge is the symbol of the city, really bustling with artists in daytime. Locals touch a plaque with their finger as they cross the bridge, which is supposed to bring luck!! I really recommend Prague to anyone-its an affordable break away. noseyrosie 18-02-2005, 21:43 Originally posted by LordChaverly The museum of Communism is well worth a visit. Quote of the month - gets my vote :D:hihi: My mum's been in Prague all week, it's been snowing and stuff. Lots of beer though, obviously. muddycoffee 07-03-2005, 13:15 I am visiting Prague, and other areas in a couple of weeks and wondered how much spending money to take, as I read in "Rough Guide" that the average monthly wage of a Czech is only £300 and someone told me last week that a litre of strong lager was about 18pence, when he went last year. And the bus ride from the airport is 27pence. Does anyone have any idea how much to take from their experience. I think the prices in the touristy areas of Prague are a little more than that these days, but the more off the beaten track you go the cheaper it is. If you would usually need say £50 a day in Paris I'd say probably £20 a day would be the prague equivalent. (but its a good 3 years since I was last there) muddycoffee 07-03-2005, 13:41 Originally posted by Yodameister If you would usually need say £50 a day in Paris I'd say probably £20 a day would be the prague equivalent. But that place has become extremely expensive over the last couple of years. A pint of guinness was £3 ! which sounds worse than London prices to me... My record is £4.50 for a pint in an Irish bar in Helsinki (I know Irish Bars are cultural vandalism but I needed some proper beer!!) Classic Rock 07-03-2005, 15:14 I used to live there in 1992, I was there when the first McDonalds opened! I imagine it'll have changed a lot since then - lets just say that the Western world hadn't really discovered the country then. MeGe 07-03-2005, 15:30 I'm also going to Prague in a few weeks, does anybody know if I'm going to need any mains plug adaptor ? muddycoffee 07-03-2005, 15:41 According to the guide book, the usual europe type adaptor works, voltage and frequency is the same muddycoffee 07-03-2005, 15:43 Originally posted by Classic Rock I used to live there in 1992, I was there when the first McDonalds opened! All the other european cities have them, and it's nice to walk in and feel right at home with your own people. Even if the beer has strange label or name...! Madrid is incredible, more rock bars than anywhere! susan76 17-06-2006, 10:12 There is so much to see ... trust me a few days is not enough. We went there last month. We arranged everything before we went. First we book a transfer prague-airport-transfers.co.uk then we stayed at KK Hotel Fenix. I would recommend visit Prague Castle, Charles Bridge and a lot good restaurants around lesser town. Also check out some clubs like PARADISE or CLUB LAVKA ... One of them (near the Charles bridge) claims to be the biggest club in Europe, although I can't vouch for this as I have never been to it. Jimbob1989 17-06-2006, 10:34 I want to go to prague, but the parents are more in favour of somewhere with a bit more sun :( muddycoffee 17-06-2006, 11:24 I want to go to prague, but the parents are more in favour of somewhere with a bit more sun :( Then you should all go to budapest. Similar to prague but very warm, it is only 1000 miles north of corfu! Since going to prague I have been to Krakow in poland and Budapest in Hungary, and they are all superb places to visit and have many similarities being former communist east european cities. I would say that Prague can be a little overrated and expensive these days however. As it is a little too popular. angle20 17-06-2006, 14:47 We've had threads on Prague before (which you might find in search). The architecture is superb and the beer is cheap. Well worth a visit. royjames 17-06-2006, 14:53 I will also be going to Prague in the next couple of months,I have been told its a beautifull city and very cheap, cant wait. |
