Thought I heard somewhere on here that theyve been given a late licence.

 Well they just had their 1am license approved for Friday and Saturday nights and have a new landlord in place so I doubt it.

There is a 'pub to let' sign outside, so presumably it's a case of owner/landlord change rather than closing (unless no-one wants it of course! :hihi:).

In a way its sad the place is closing, for me at least because I have lots of good memories about that place when I used to go there in the 70s. It used to be a good boozer.

When i was 16/17 - six years ago now (im that old??!!!) it was really gud on a thursday and ,onday night, me and all my mates went in there but in recent years i wont go in there ever egain - its full of the absoloute chav tossers of hillsborough/stannington/parson x/wisewood etc im sure all you other young people of S6 agree about that - they give Hillsbro a bad name innit!!!!!

As I predicted last year, Weatherspoons V local pubs thread or whatever it was called, this is the first casualty of Weatherspoons in Hillsborough......this comes as no surprise, and I expect another one to follow suit which is not a 100 metres away....trade in this area has suffered very very badly due to the presence of Rawson Spring and its beer at least 70 pence a pint cheaper than anyone else.....and none of these pubs around it have anything much to offer that is different from any other......possible exception is the Shakespeare after its Greene King refurb, but even that is up against the discount beer king across the road.....

the comments above are right though, that place was/is the biggest den of chavs, morons and idiots I have ever had the dis-pleasure of visiting. Many of its patrons had barely learned to stop scraping their knuckles along the floor, or could put more than 3 words together in a sentence that did not contain at least 2 swear words. I have been to pubs in Manor Park that have better clientèle!!!!!!

Even the New Barrack is suffering, used to be rammed a year or two back now very quiet which is a shame.

God yeah! Remember Alana?
She pierced my ear with a dart in the car park, I still have the earring in now.
Bloody good days.

blueball definitly shutting and knocking down

And when was this announced? I find it odd seeing as they just got the extension to the license.

It is a shame if this shuts. I would hate to think that somewhere else will have to tolerate the idiots that go here.

I have to confess I used to go in there in the late 70's and used to love it and The Gate too :loopy:

I wouldn't be seen dead in either now I think they are doing Hillsborough a favour closing it but the "Chavs" will just go somewhere else as Goldenfleece has said.

The Old Blue Ball at Hillsborough have only recently applied for an extension of their licensing hours, which were partially granted.

I was a member of the Licensing Board which heard their application. I recall their legal representative referring to the long history of the pub - including the Great Flood (of 1864). Mention was also made of the new owners intention to seek a tenant to run the pub.

As Foxy said, they have just been granted their late license application so I think this is unlikely!

Although if they ever did knock down the Blue Ball, I hope they could see their way to providing HGV access to the Hillsborough Precinct goods area behind - that way massive lorries wouldn't keep getting stuck on Hawksley Avenue...

I would've thought Wetherspoons would be too high class for chavs, they'll stick to Legends or the Freemason's Arms methinks, perhaps they'll even Tram it up to the Malin.

I can't remember any good old days in the Ball. I think everyone who's gone in has experienced a black eye whether they asked for it or not. I went in with my Uncle and his mates from being 17, I can always remember it having a Chav/townie mentality in there. Just it was oversized shirts with big collars in those days rather than I've just got out of bed in my trackie dress sense we have now.
