My bold.

Get rid of them! I've been saying for years that AOL has probably the most clueless technical "support" team in the Industry! And the worst online service as well IMO.

They don't like you to use IE or any other browser besides their own piece of garbage, bloatware infested software!

The only way you can properly rid yourself of the problem is to refresh windows and cross your fingers and hope aol installs properly first time.i wouldnt have aol any where near my computer.Over the years ive seen many aol linked problems, although some swear by the crap, usually people who know nothing else.

I'm with rich on this one (although I don't share his views on pcworld :P -let's not start). I'd stay away from aol and get shut as soon as you can. Personally I've never had a problem with BT (apart from them being a bit expensive).

If he means what I think he means by 'refresh windows' then right click on your desktop and click refresh.

lol.

No format,or restore if its a branded pc.system restore might work, but usually with aol you need a big spade to dig it out.

A format will take an hour trying to fix the problem when he dosnt know what hes doing will be impossible, even someone who does it wouldnt be easy if system restore and a reinstall of aol dosnt work, which rarely does.
Hes open to other suggestions, mine is only that a suggestion, and its the action i would take, but then i havnt got all day or is it week.

Maybe I don't understand his problem fully then - just a disk reformat for a browser problem ,as I understand it, seems a bit extreme to me....

Use IE 7 or firefox etc. as a simple solution . Or reinstall the Aol browser component of the aol package I'd certainly try that before wiping my HDD.

Hes already wiped it,read the above posts,so doing it again which by his last post didnt go too well anyway, needs doing again.

Lets say for a minute,i was a computer engineer, employed to fix the problem and you were paying by the hour.
a windows refresh would take about an hour job done.
messing about trying to fix the problem could take hours.
installing another browser might sort it ,but id say i doubt it,and at best would leave the problem in place which will more likley cause other problems yet to be encountered.
Another point of view is this, the op sounds like hes dosnt have a mass amount of computer knowledge to me ,so the advice i gave was simpler, and is 95% likley to erradicate the problem, provided that some other software being installed isnt compounding the problem.

When did you install the aol stuff? As newvanandman pointed out you might want to retry restoring the system to an earlier date, it might not have worked.

If you have done a system restore and the problem is still there, then i personally would be backing up and getting the xp disc out.
i miss understood about the restore,is the pc a branded pc with a back up or a made system with a xp disc?

Sounds like you've been sold a Pup mate.

This is one the FEW times I'll agree with people who say PCW are clueless when it comes to PCs.

They'll sell you a PC, not necessarily the best PC for your needs, but whichever model is this week's best seller.

I'd still trust them over the small traders though.

Can you elaborate on "stuff"?
Alot of the pc world branded pc;s have the backup on a hidden partition on the hard drive and will either restore from there or you have to create discs from there to restore with.Is it that this didnt work?If so you need to obtain the discs from them, telling them that the backup is corrupt.
pc world used to have a 28 day rule allowing you to swop it should you have problems, you would need to dump it on the counter to get anywhere though,as they like to check it over the phone first to make sure your doing it right.
Its very difficult to get a real picture of whats going on with the little snippets of info so far.

ps,i dont have any direct knowledge on the brand you state.

newvanandman
14-01-2008, 21:17
one other thing,pc world are not responsible for lack of knowledge nor aol software corruption!

ring the help line number you have been given, and ask them to guide you through a full restore, tell them that you believe that the backup is corrupt, and dont acept any premium numbers they might fob you off with.
Dont mention aol!
My belief it is lack of knowledge not computer problems that are the main problem.
you should be able to restore it by one key on boot, have a read of your manuals,
If you take the pc anywhere else and they dont know what they are doing you could jepoadise your warranty.

Sorry new van and man didn't read the previous posts properly half asleep ! I could have a look at it for you if you like depending where you are if not I'd have words with pcworld see if you can convince their 'tech guys' (:hihi:) to come have a look at it as its a pc you bought from them which doesn't work as it should and see if they'll come out/have a look at it for you. If not I'd take it to a local company such as moonlight computers (never used them my self but from what I've gathered they're good)

pc world will not send anyone for software issues.they will go through the restore process though, on the phone,if the backup is found to be corrupt then they will send out the discs to do it.

Bryan, can you start over and tell us what the problem is?... this thread has turned into a PCW- and AOL-slagging fest. (Much as i'd like to join in, we're not really helping Bryan by doing so)

As i understand it, you're having a problem with the rendering of certain webpages with the AOL browser. Is that correct?

And from what i can make of all the above you've tried a System Restore. System Restore being the program in the Start Menu - not a System Recovery by booting from the manufacturer's CD (this would wipe the computer back to factory settings - and clear off everything, including AOL!).

How about trying a different web browser? You *can* use Internet Explorer or Firefox when using AOL as an ISP.

:D would seem so - never actually used you yet keep meaning to find an excuse to though. Used to use gemsoft but after their demise I'm out local sheffield shops. Been in excel computers but they weren't keen on helping me and the next time I went in the bloke from microsoft that was questioning them on the legitimacy of their software scared me off. (by the way they were using legitimate software)
