View Full Version : Pet dentistry..would you pay for your dog to have this done?
For my college course we are doing a group project and this is to do with pet dentistry mostly dogs and cats
would anyone on here actually pay to have their pets teeth fixed? this would include things like crowns, false teeth and braces
pet-walkiz 14-01-2008, 15:52 Ive Just paid 72.00 to have my dogs teeth scaled and polished...not as an urgent health problem but because, i want him to smell fresh and clean, as well as having continual healthy teeth and gums.
so yes im all for it , if it prevents decay, infections & illness
:O cheeky doing research for lesson on the forum!!
I would only put my dog under anesthetic if it was for health reasons, ie to scale and polish to prevent decay and infection as Pet walkies has said. If my dogs teeth were crooked and I wanted them to look nice, then no.
My eldest rescue came to me with crooked teeth on the bottom, due her persistant obsession with bricks and boulders, they didnt cause her any problems so they were left alone.
KATIEB_23 14-01-2008, 16:16 Cheeky or resourceful?! ;)
Personally I think False teeth/braces are a bit OTT but I would follow my dentists advice and if they were needed because my dog was in discomfort, then I would do so.
reason i asked on here is because i wanted a response off pet lovers :)
thanks for everyone who have replied
TattyBear 14-01-2008, 17:32 I think asking on here was a good idea ami_j.
I would only have my dogs teeth done if like everyone else, there was the need to for health reasons. Not cos I wanted them to have a Hollywood smile lol.
i clean my all my dogs teeth every couple of days and the vet checks them out every 6 months or so.
shihtzumad 14-01-2008, 18:11 like you have all have said, i would pay for there teeth to be scaled and polished, but defoo not for crowns, braces....omg false teeth lol.
I had holly's (dog) done a few months ago, went i got her she had/has bad gum disease and therfore needed teeth romoved and plaque removing....i luckiy got it on the insurance but i would pay for it if it made her feel better
Purely for health reasons, yes but not cosmetic. Never had much of a problem with dogs but cats seem to need dental work more frequently which I put down to processed foods and/or genetics
I would and have paid for dentistry for my cats in the past, but I would never put any of my animals through an operation purely to make them look better- health reasons only.
Eddy's due for a little mini op soon to remove a lump on his leg that he's chewing at... he's 13 on the 20th and it scares me silly putting him under GA... BUT if he's going under anyway, I'll have his teeth done because they were terrible when we got him and seem to have improved as far as they will without a scale and polish.
He absolutely stinks and I'm worried it'll cause more problems later if they're not done.
We get a lot of animals in the vets (particularly cats) that haven't had their teeth looked after and believe me, it's worth booking them in for a clean to prevent the problems these poor things go through. Many leave with barely any teeth at all :(
fairywings 01-02-2008, 10:28 We had our staffy dogs teeth cleaned also he had about 3 out which cost £175 but was worth it as he had very bad breath. We now put breath freshner in his water and hes been great. I would recommend anyone to look after their dogs teeth after all they feel pain just like us. As for braces ect i dont think id go that far,but you never know;)
angellic 01-02-2008, 11:35 I would only get it done for health reasons, my rottweiler has a chipped tooth at the bottom it doesn't bother her and it doesn't bother us and she still looks gorgeous
