View Full Version : Movie Groups in Sheffield?
Hi,
Not quite sure I'm posting at the right place. I apologize if I don't.
I'm 30 and quite a bit of a movie buff, and would like to get to share my passion with other people from Sheffield.
If you're interested and/or are member of any movie group I could be part of, please let me know! :)
la_que_sabé 14-01-2008, 13:41 Allo Totoro
I'm interested in joining a movie group too but haven't heard of any in existence. If you set something up or hear about one, please let me know too. I wouldn't exactly call myself a movie buff but have an eclectic taste so, so long as it's not hollywood blockbusters week in week out, I'd be interested.
:P
maverick 16-01-2008, 09:25 Hi,
I might also be interested, please let me know if you set something up.
Rachael
There are non-examination (ie for leisure and pleasure) film studies classes at the Showroom and I know that some people who attend those also organise informal film get togethers and the occasional party at a members house etc.
jenniker 23-01-2008, 09:05 Hi,
I would be interested as well! Why don't we all meet for a film then?
...but what kind of movies are you actually interested in?
Jen
I really like all kinds of films, really. Art house or mainstream.
I used to attend the film quiz at the Showroom with some colleagues. None English, but we managed to win it 3 times... :P
Yeap, we could all meet for a flick and chat over a drink, that'd be great.
maverick 23-01-2008, 14:43 I would be up for that! Not very keen on super long films or ones that have been dubbed (sub-titles are fine though) ;-)
OK, let's go for a double bill of Ben Hur + The Ten Commandments. :hihi:
Lord Bute 23-01-2008, 15:46 The film studies thing at the showroom is good.
The University Film Unit is also a good place to see films
http://www.filmunit.org.uk/about/
And you can organise your own screenings of old classics if you like (although you have to stump up the money first and try and claim it back by charging).
If you could get 30 or so people on here to agree to a film it might be a giggle.
dela_tom 25-01-2008, 10:54 Sounds an interesting idea, so would be interested in attending too! Prefer Art House movies, but also go to the occassional blockbuster.
Fave movies (all time) : Paris Texas, Shawshank, The Conversation, Fargo, Heimat, Jackie Brown, Annie Hall, Amelie and Wings of Desire
Fave Movies (last year) : This is England, Family Friend, Paris Je T'aime
Anything happened on this? How about a trip to "There Will Be Blood", which would appear to have quite a broad appeal? It opens at the Showroom on Feb 15.
Gosh, I've been dying to see this movie. I'm in. :)
Btw, I am suggesting the film, not particularly the date of the 15th. Sometime in the following week would be better for me, as I am already out on the 13th and 14th.
jenniker 07-02-2008, 11:38 Hi,
I would be interested as well and the week 18 - 24 Feb would suit me fine. Could do any day except Tuesday and Friday in that week.
Please let me know what suits you best.
Jen
jenniker 07-02-2008, 11:47 Sounds good to me!
Ah! Have just remembered I will be in Belfast on 23 Feb! Can we make it Thurs 21 Feb instead folks?
jenniker 07-02-2008, 11:56 No problem. 21st it is!
Anyone else out there who would like to join us?...a good movie (hopefully) followed by a drink and chat in the showroom bar...
jen
la_que_sabé 07-02-2008, 15:29 Hi, 21st sounds good to me too if it's cool to join! X How will we all spot each other? All wear red tops? (je te blague!) :P
dela_tom 08-02-2008, 17:14 Thurs 21st Feb good for me too!
Hi, I'd be up for seeing There Will Be Blood on Thursday 21st. You still up for more people coming along? Is it the 8pm showing you were thinking of?
Cheers
Owen
sixriver 13-02-2008, 20:58 I really enjoy the cinema, I would love to go next week but i'm working. If this becomes a regular thing Could we start a cinema group in the special interests section

Hi Owen,
Sure, the more the merrier! 8pm it is.
I really enjoy the cinema, I would love to go next week but i'm working. If this becomes a regular thing Could we start a cinema group in the special interests section
Hi Sixriver, we will put another post on this thread to keep you updated.
Hi, 21st sounds good to me too if it's cool to join! X How will we all spot each other? All wear red tops? (je te blague!) :P
Good question. I have seen some threads where people tried to catch up in a place but managed to miss each other. How about if we meet in the foyer instead of the bar?
Complication is that There Will Be Blood is 2 hours and 38 minutes long. Given there may also be trailers and ads etc, the 8pm showing wouldn't be likely to end until nearly 11pm, not giving us any real time for discussion.
If it's still on, I'm coming (just checked my busy schedule...). If we don't have much time to discuss the film straight after, we could meet in person or online at a later date to talk about it..?
Thursday would be perfect to me. How many of us are coming in the end? :)
That'd be great to meet at a later date to discuss the film, or online!
The "official" film studies group at the Showroom operates on the basis of going to see the film one week and then meeting up again the next week to discuss it. Would seem to be the best option in this case, especially given that "There will be blood" is relatively long. How about pencilling in 28 Feb for discussion session?
alex3659 16-02-2008, 19:42 where is the showroom?
Very near the train station. www.showroom.org.uk
How about pencilling in 28 Feb for discussion session?
Sounds good.
jenniker 18-02-2008, 07:19 Great!
What time shall we meet this Thursday?
Jen
Shall we say 7.30-40 at the box office? :)
la_que_sabé 18-02-2008, 14:18 That sounds good. If you see a short curly haired woman walking up to groups of strangers asking if they're the Shef Forum film club come and grab me will you? ! See you all on Thursday. :-)
jenniker 19-02-2008, 07:36 That sounds good. If you see a short curly haired woman walking up to groups of strangers asking if they're the Shef Forum film club come and grab me will you? ! See you all on Thursday. :-)
I will! :D
If the weather is still as cold as it is at the moment you can recognise me by my bright red wholly hat...see you on Thursday.
Jen
I am coming straight from work so will be wearing a suit and a purple/violet shirt. I have "distinguished" looking hair (ie greying) and spectacles.
I'll be coming straight from work, too. I'm tall and slim, with short curly hair. I'll be standing in front of the posters. My name's Pierre. :)
Hi folks
I'm not going to make it tonight after all - I've got a cough that would make you all want to kill me if you sit near me in a cinema. I'll try and see the film sometime between now and next Thursday so I can come along for the discussion.
la_que_sabé 22-02-2008, 11:30 Hello everyone, just to say it was really nice meeting you all last night and did enjoy the film (despite the sound/visual interferences I was oblivious to)! It'd be great to meet up again. I'm free all evenings pretty much so if you decide a date I'll be happy to tag along.
:P
Same here. Really had a nice time.
Little trivia. This is an easy one. ;)
"Rick: Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship."
End of Casablanca.
Nice to meet you all last night.
Hi,
Apologies I didn't make it last night - I'm currently enjoying laryngitis and didn't think it would make a good impression to pass it onto you all! I hope to see There Will Be Blood on the weekend so are you meeting up to discuss it/watch another film - I'm still keen to be involved. Cheers
Owen
jenniker 23-02-2008, 12:38 Hey everyone - super. I enjoyed it, too.
Let's have another movie night then!
How about Thursday again? (it seems to have suited everyone)
The 13th March?
What movie?
Jen
ps:Owen, I hope you will have recovered by then...laryngitis sounds not that pleasant.
13th is fine for me.
The Showroom website doesn't have listings that far ahead though... anyone got a March Showroom programme yet?
And is the meet still on to discuss There Will Be Blood? If so I'll try and see it tomorrow afternoon.
jenniker 25-02-2008, 07:21 hi shlg,
sorry, this might be too late, but we did end up meeting for half a pint after the movie to chat about it - hence, we are not meeting on thursday....but tell us what you thought of it on the 13th!
jen
That's good actually - gives me more time to get round to seeing it. I didn't go yesterday because I've still got the lurgy....
Hi,
Feeling much better and sounding much less like Marlon Brando now. Definitely up for 13th March meet. Count me in.
Thanks
Owen
Hi there,
Had laryngitis a few years back - VERY unpleasant, less Marlon Brando, more Madge Bishop though.
I'll be up for this one with it being a Thursday, I'll keep an eye out for what you're watching if it's ok for a new lass to tag along?
As we have only had one meeting so far I would hardly think we are closed to newbies! :D
As we have only had one meeting so far I would hardly think we are closed to newbies! :D
Marvellous - look forward to seeing what film it is then and hopefully come along.
Ms Contrary 27-02-2008, 21:22 Hi Everyone,
Enjoyed meeting you all too. 13th March is good for me. Just have to wait and see what films come out now. Look forward to it.
Liz
Ah, are you the lurker? :) Anyhoo, you can see which films are on on the 13th at www.showroom.org.uk.
la_que_sabé 29-02-2008, 12:38 Hi, 13th March is cool with me too. :-)
maverick007 03-03-2008, 13:37 Hi,
Only just found this thread but would be interested in joining your film buff crew at some point - film on the 13th sounds good. I'll keep up to speed with the thread from now on
Pete
mrmonkah 03-03-2008, 19:26 Hi all, im a 23yr old physics student and im looking at making a low budget sci-fi film that will not demand high budget effects. Anyway, my point is that im looking for crew members to help realise this piece. If you could kindly direct me to a better spot, I will post a formal advertisment for people and more importantly their skills in numerous fields.
youwhatref 04-03-2008, 20:15 Could do with this moving to Nights Out etc as i miss it on here. I'm a possiblity but parking is a bit crappy down there. Will also try to create meets for Centretainment as I and one brave other (Edna) went a few days ago. There will be blood is a no for me as seen already but will monitor on here and lookout for future meets :)

hm...I guess you might be better to start a threat in the "activities" or even "employment" section. We are just some people that enjoy watching a movie from time to time.
Good luck!:)
Any thoughts about what we'll be seeing on Thursday, folks?
I wondered about 'Margot at the Wedding'....
Ms Contrary 09-03-2008, 18:35 I'm happy with that. Only thing is it starts quite early so people might not be able to make it from work. I should be ok though, but happy to go with the majority.
la_que_sabé 09-03-2008, 20:59 Well the only other option would be Garage which has a later showing at 6.30pm and 8.40pm (There will be blood also has a later showing but I have already seen this and I don't think my nerves have recovered from the first viewing yet so a second is out of the question for at least another years I reckons)! I would like to see Garage but I can also make the 6pm showing of Margot so just keep us updated on plans.
:D
jenniker 10-03-2008, 07:13 hiya,
I might not be able to make it after all...but will join in for the next time again!
jen
I would be very happy with Garage too! Does anyone else have an opinion?
youwhatref 10-03-2008, 19:40 Is this at the showroom? If so, any parking down there or just usual NCP car parks etc?
Ms Contrary 10-03-2008, 20:54 So what's the general consensus for Thursday? I've no particular preference and can do early or late. Who's going to be decisive?

You've just volunteered yourself MsContrary! :)
Is this at the showroom? If so, any parking down there or just usual NCP car parks etc?
Yes, the showroom. There's a little bit of on-street parking on Paternoster Row, but it gets full up and then you have to resort to the NCP round the corner.

Thanks shlg, Centretainment is better for me then, but will see the time & film tbc :)
la_que_sabé 10-03-2008, 22:39 Garage? 6.30 showing?
:D
Garage? 6.30 showing?
:D
That suits me.
Ms Contrary 11-03-2008, 19:19 Garage, 6.30pm showing suits me too. Meet around the ticket office bit again?
Garage at 6.30pm is more doable for me than Margot at the Wedding at 6pm. Garage is quite short, so should give us plenty of time for discussion. Interestingly, the director (on Radio 4 Film programme) was saying that the orginal cut was 150mins, but he then took away everything that wasn't absolutely essential to pare it down to 80m.
Oops, now I can't go. Next time though!
la_que_sabé 13-03-2008, 07:36 Oh dear, something last minute has come up so unfortunately I'm unable to attend tonight's screening. Should be able to attend the next one though. :P
Ms Contrary 13-03-2008, 14:37 I can still make it so will be around the ticket office shortly after 6pm. Hope to see some others there!
I went to the film but didn't arrive until 6.20. Couldn't find you Ms Contrary, or anyone else! The film was rather more bleak than I had thought.
Ms Contrary 13-03-2008, 21:32 Ah, must just have missed you. I hung around until around that time and then bumped into someone I knew who was going to Nick Clegg's talk so decided to go to that instead. Shall we fix up another date soon?
Although I am not generally keen on "worthy" documentaries, I am rather keen to see the film "We Are Together" about a choir of South African AIDS orphans. Heard clips of their music on Radio 4 and it sounded pretty incredible.
I am rather keen to see the film "We Are Together" about a choir of South African AIDS orphans.
I'd be happy to see that: looks good from the trailers. I could go on Sunday or Thursday.
(off-topic.... there's an African accapella choir that practices on Monday evenings at the Quaker meeting house: I'm often in quiet meetings in the room above, and it's lovely to have these delicious sounds seeping through the floorboards!)
Ms Contrary 15-03-2008, 13:48 I'd like to see that too but can only do Monday and Wednesday next week!
I'd like to see that too but can only do Monday and Wednesday next week!
Looks like it finishes on Thursday, so we might have to go to this one separately...
Hi everybody,
Sorry I was away on long holiday in France, couldn't attend our last session. I'm back now. Have you got any film in mind for our next meeting? :)
Ms Contrary 16-04-2008, 20:43 Shall we try and resurrect this? How about in a couple of weeks, either Tuesday 29th or Wednesday 30th April?
I'd be up for it. The Wednesday would be better for me.
Fine by me, do we know what's on?
From the Showroom website:
Wednesday 30 April
persepolis (12a) - 8.50
The oxford murders (15) - 8.40
Essentials:dreams (15) - 7.30
the book of the dead (12a) - 6.30
happy-go-lucky (15) - times tbc
MY BROTHER IS AN ONLY CHILD (15) -TIMES TBC
PLUS FILMS TBC
I would be happy to see any of them ('Plus films TBC' is supposed to be good! :) ).
Edited to say: the 'Film information' bit also lists:
My Beautiful Laundrette 15
Wednesday 30 April 6.45pm
...although it doesn't appear in the listing times so we'd have to check if we wanted to see it. I've seen it before but only on video, so I'd be happy to see it on the big screen if others wanted to.
I'd posted a needless panic so now I've removed it. Ignore me.
Persepolis looks good, there was an interview with the author/director in the Metro today.
Unfortunately, the start time of 8.50 makes it a bit difficult to have a discussion afterwards.
Wouldn't mind seeing Happy-go-Lucky myself.
Wouldn't mind seeing Happy-go-Lucky myself.
Fine by me. Anyone else? Totoro? Ms Contrary? Anyone? :)
Ms Contrary 26-04-2008, 09:12 Happy go lucky sounds good to me. This Wednesday, right? Anyone know what time it starts? Will check Showroom website now and see if times have been updated.
Ms Contrary 26-04-2008, 09:14 There's a 6.20pm showing and then a later one around 8.45pm. Assume we'll be going for the earlier one?
Earlier one would be better for discussion etc. Can shlg make it from Leeds in time?
Can shlg make it from Leeds in time?
Yes, she can. Especially as she may well be working at home on Wednesday.
:)
MrAndrew 27-04-2008, 12:40 This sounds like a great idea! Mind if I tag along?
30/04 6:20 showing of Happy-go-Lucky at the Showroom then? How will I know who you are?
How will I know who you are?
We will hang around near the box office at 6.10pm. I have short curly hair and glasses; ms contrary is quite tall with dark hair; code13 has dark hair (with 'distinguished bits' - I think that's how he chooses to describe it) and glasses. I don't know what anyone else looks like.
I'd be interested in coming to the next one. :)
I'd be interested in coming to the next one. :)
You'd be very welcome to come this evening if you're free.
We were so organised last night that we arranged the next meeting of the movie group:
Caramel, at the Showroom, Wednesday 28th May, time to be confirmed.
MrAndrew 01-05-2008, 10:45 it was a pleasure to meet you all last night, i had a really good time. I'll definately be along on the 28th.
Good to see that a few of you are ale drinkers, I won't make the mistake of driving in next time, then I can join you.
You'd be very welcome to come this evening if you're free.
Ahh, I was busy I'm afraid. Is the next film this?

Yep, that's the one, but your link was a bit broken so here it is again:

Hey guys, this thread is going out of control. Can someone summarise what kind of club this is, how many members and what sort of movies? Is it from whatever is showing at cinema or some sort of art movies?
I'm interested but I don't seem to follow what is going on. Do you have a facebook group or website or list of events??

There are about 6 people who've been involved at all so far, but new 'members' are welcome (there is no 'membership', you just come along if you like the sound of the film we're going to see.
The way it works is that we go to see a film together (at the Showroom: http://www.showroom.org.uk so often the films are a bit 'alternative'), and then we adjourn to the bar or pub to discuss the film.
We don't have any communication apart from this thread, and the fact that we see each other for the film and discussion. It's all very ad hoc.
The next meeting is on 28th May (we're aiming for once a month). You'd be welcome to join us.
We're going to see Caramel, at the Showroom, Wednesday 28th May, time to be confirmed.
There's a potential issue with Caramel, folks: the only evening showing next Weds is at 8.40, therefore finishing at (quick mental arithmetic) 10.16. Do we think this gives us enough discussion time or should we go for a different film?
Other options include XXY at 6.20 (I wouldn't mind seeing this one); Honeydripper at 6pm, or Yasmin at 6.45.
Details at http://www.showroom.org.uk/cinema/filminformation.html
Opinions?
I'm definitely in for Caramel! :)
MrAndrew 21-05-2008, 12:49 I do agree that we'll need to be going to a showing between 6 and 7.
XXY and Yasmin both sound good. I especially like what I've heard about Yasmin.
I'm fine with Yasmin at 6.45. And it gives us plenty of time for a movie chat afterwards. :)
Ms Contrary 22-05-2008, 22:17 Fine by me too.
Aww, that looks really good. But I have made plans to watch Sex and the City on that date. Can you let me know if it's any good? and I will try to watch it another time.
Also, can you please put the date of the next film and I will try to attend.
Thanks.
Naz.

Fine by me too.
winterof78 23-05-2008, 16:47 I've just started going to the Showroom more (esp since i get student discount on Wednesdays! :) Can I come along on the 28th? Not seen Yasmin, but I enjoy alternative films and world cinema.
How will I know who you are?
Simon
I'd like to come along on the 28th too if it's all right with you - Yasmin sounds interesting and I like the Showroom.
MrAndrew 25-05-2008, 16:05 How will I know who you are?
Simon
Ah yes, the identification problem, shall I make a sign to hold up or something, or we could all wear a certain colour item?
You could always make a sign (shlg has said she will hold it up) but make sure you put "unofficial" on it somewhere!
I am happy to hold up a sign, and have also helpfully re-henna'd my hair so you can look out for the VERY ginger person holding up a sign. :)
We're still ok for tonight? I'll be sitting in front of the cash desk, under the movie posters, round 6.30. Im tall, slim with short black hair. My name's Pierre. :)
Yes, still on for tonight. If anyone gets there early, some of us will be killing time in the bar from 6ish. Assuming we get a table, I'll put a sign on the table saying who we are.
Looking forward to it. :)
winterof78 28-05-2008, 13:30 I'll be there around 6:30 too, in the foyer. I'm simon. Blue scarf, looking lost.
edited to remove irrelevant twaddle.
Thanks, all, for a good evening yesterday.
Simon, hope you didn't make it, as the alternative is that you were unable to find us.
We decided last night on the next movie group outing:
In Search Of A Midnight Kiss on Monday 16th June, 6.30pm at the Showroom.
See y'all then.
Hi all, just wanted to say thanks, I had a very nice evening yesterday. See you on the 16th! :)
tommytwotone 01-06-2008, 16:31 Hi all, I'm pretty new to Sheff and saw this, sounds like a great idea! If I fancy coming down do I just need to turn up on 16th?
Cheers,
Tom
Hi Tom
Yes, just turn up. I'll try and remember to have a sign again, so you can identify us.
Yup, the sign worked well last week. :)
la_que_sabé 03-06-2008, 20:54 Halloooo! After our first 'There will be blood meet' I fell out of the loop long time due to uni committments but it sounds like you've gotten all organised with signs and things! Anyways, if there's no objections, now uni has finished, I'd really like to start back with this group.
Francesca :P
I can't imagine that there could be any objections. Welcome back. :)
la_que_sabé 04-06-2008, 07:47 Yay! See you on 16th! ;)
moodibloos 08-06-2008, 22:06 I would like to join too on the 16th June (In Search of Midnight) if I can please.
This will probably sound silly - Im quite shy so this is a BIG thing for me to do as Im not very good with conversation... but I like to watch films at the Showroom and it would be good to meet likewise new people at the same time - so I'm gonna be brave. :)
Do you all just meet up bang on 6.30pm in the foyer (near where you buy tickets) or earlier in the bar area? What colour is this sign as the bar is usually full?
Can I ask, is this just a group for young film students or anyone who likes to watch film generally as I'm... ahem ..at the age when "life begins"? :D
P.S. how big is the group now?

We are not scary! (not at the cinema, anyway :))

We arrive gradually depending on what times we finish work, so there are likely to be a few of us in the bar earlier; otherwise we meet by the box-office tills 10 minutes before the film starts.
The sign last time was just a sheet of A4 white paper, but I might try to do something more noticeable for next time, if I get organised.
Can I ask, is this just a group for young film students or anyone who likes to watch film generally as I'm... ahem ..at the age when "life begins"? :D
Based on the ages of people whose ages I actually know, the age range is early-twenties to mid-forties, so far: but anyone of any age is welcome, as long as they're old enough to see the film we pick.
P.S. how big is the group now?
There were six of us last time - I think that was the biggest group so far.
Do come along!
moodibloos 09-06-2008, 16:37 Thanks shlg,
I will see you all on the 16th!.. hope I manage to find you all on the night :)
In case anyone's interested, there's an interview of the director of In Search of a Midnight Kiss in this week's Guardian film weekly podcast - I'm too new on this forum to able to post a link but if you go to the culture section, you should be able to find it.
I am not too new to post a link!
