I've been plugging away on a PS2 RPG by the Name of Disgaea for the past six month and am thinking of moving on to something new. The sequel to the aforementioned game, Phantom Brave, is on the shelves as I write this and I was wondering if anyone out there has played it or has another title that might peak my interest?
I'm a little cold towards games like Final Fantasy at the moment as I don't like the techno/fantasy angle they follow...anyone able to help?
i didn't think you could get really decent RPG's on a PS2?

Depends on how you define a decent RPG.
If you were into things like Shining Force on the Mega Drive or you've played and enjoyed Final Fantasy Tactics on the GBA, then Disgaea's a damn good choice...rather than a pile of cutscenes and silly outfits like most of the FF outings on the PS2 of late.

Now there's a game with a rubbish PS2 version.
I just started FF X-2 last weekend but so far there are only 3 girls in it :(. What happened to all the good characters? and what happened to Yuna's ability to summon?.

Phantom Brave is a pretty good game. You can find a review of it here -

If you have a chipped or NTSC PS2 you might also want to pick up Front Mission 4.

Also, in the same vein as Front Mission 4 (giant mechs) there is also Ring of Red, which tries to make the combat side of things a bit more dynamic and interactive. Quite an interesting slant on the theme too - kind of a WW2 setting with giant mechs.

Phantom Brave is actually the sequel to Disgaea, and it was at the top of my list...but there are changes in the system that make me ponder the purchase.

Yes, I personally wouldn't be put off by it though. The combat rules operate quite differently but this is what differentiates it from Disgaea. Although it looks very similar, new rules lead to new tactics and strategies, and thus a new way of playing the game. Maybe you'll like it more, maybe less, than Disgaea, but you'll never know unless you play through it.

That's true...but the main thing putting me off is the fact that in Disgaea the characters you create can be saved and carried over to a new game once you've completed the thing once. This makes for a great deal of replay value and means you can explore anything you missed first time round. Phantom Brave lacks that feature.

There is a Lord of the rings game that has the same way of playing as final fantasy but without the happy happy story line. Also me and all my friends have just passed an Ominusha craze, playing the 2nd and the 3rd in a week. It is strangly addictive and highly recommended.
