View Full Version : Sony Ericsson P910i - what's it like?
fnkysknky 16-02-2005, 07:34 I'm after a new phone and looking at getting a P910i. Anyone got one, if so what are the PDA features like? I'll be using it for work - mainly as a diary and possibly to keep track of expenses. Got a K700i at the moment that I can do the above on but it's too small and fiddly to be of any real use so I don't bother. Is it worth getting it then or would it be better going with a seperate PDA or even laptop?
i have a p900, which is very similar.
i've found that most of the features are quite useable, the best ability is it syncronising with outlook.
I've also found that despite the features being useable, i don't use them as much as i expected. I'll be changing back to something smaller for my next phone as it's quite brick like. No way it's comfortable slipped into a pocket.
Take a look at something like the Orange SPV C500. It runs a Microsoft OS and so with ActiveSync on your PC you have pretty tight integration with Outlook/Exchange. Plus it's smaller than the SE by quite a way.
bigflesh 17-02-2005, 18:33 I have a P910i. Its a really good phone. If you want it for expenses, it has a built in spreadsheet (which is compatible with Excel) and works great for keeping lists/calculating costs etc. A word processing application which again, enables you to draft letters, keep lists etc. Both applications are fully compatible with Microsoft Office so if you have a computer, you can copy them over for final edit/records sake. Stacks of onboard memepry and a 64mb card for additional storage of pretty much anything (documents, mp3's, ringtones, pictures, screensavers and additional applications). There are loads of 3rd party apps designed to work with the phone too. Just do a search on Google.
bigflesh 17-02-2005, 18:34 oh...and.... Between the phone and laptop/pda. A PDA is OK, but you will always need a phone 2 so essentially, thats 2 bits of kit for 2 different jobs. The P910i does both. As for a laptop, its not really on tap. 1st it takes 2 to 4 minutes to boot up, is big and a bit clunky. The P910i is a smart phone, a handy, slimline little gadget which brings the powers and business applications of a PDA/Laptop into a converged email/sms/gsm(e.g phone) easy to use and lightweight bit of machinery. Other than having a keyboard stitched into your arm, I don't think its beatable at the moment.
fnkysknky 18-02-2005, 07:17 Yeah well I don't really know why I asked about a PDA as it's either the P910i or nothing I think. As long as the spreadsheet and word pro are usable then I'm happy - as I say with the K700i the apps are more of a novelty then any use.
With regards to a laptop, I do actually need it for CAD design of kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms etc. and it would be useful if I could knock a quick plan up in a customers house. It's a pain in the arse if I have to go home everytime the customer wants to change something to get an updated plan and 3D impression :)
bigflesh 18-02-2005, 16:57 fnky,
cheers for the gmail btw! i must admit that the stylus (pen thing) and screen take a bit of getting used 2. there is a jotter program which enables you to draw, but it has its limitations as the screen is smal. the text imput feature with the stylus on the screen is hot and miss 2 as the p910i does not always interpret your handwriting and assigns the wrong letter. However, the qwerty keyboard makes up 4 that so long as u have nimble fingers! Best thing 2 do is use the excel type spreadsheet feature 2 record room measurements. and save it as a file. then when u return home, u can feed the data into CAD programme, failing this, use the good old fashioned pen and paper.
fnkysknky 18-02-2005, 17:29 I always take a pad and draw the room(s) up anyway, it's just nice to be able to knock a quick 3D image together to give the customer an idea on what it's going to look like there and then instead of having to go back - some people seem to have problems visualising stuff. Looks like it will be be P910i and a laptop then.
Really I'm just trying to find an excuse to get another phone :D
