I belive it to be the horse and rider who have right of way on a bridlepath, for instance a horse and rider are within thier rights to have a brisk trott/ canter down a path. other partys concerned should be aware of this when using a bridlepath for any other reason than riding, cos an oss is big and they hurt

Have you tried a search engine? There must be some kind of local group that provides such information.

Hi, you want to get yourself a copy of the Ordnance Survey Outdoor Explorer 1 - Dark Peak. This covers Rivelin, Stannington, Mayfield Valley and Lodge Moor in 1:25000 scale.

I bought mine from here Aqua3 (http://www.aqua3.com/mappages/mapdet.asp?getmap=EX001&series=EX&gomap.x=18&gomap.y=20&gomap=submit&bysheet=EX001). Its the cheapest place around I think.

Cheers,

Pete

The best way for you to identify local Bridleways is to get a 1:25,000 scale Ordnance Survey map. All Public Footpaths and Bridleways (and "permissive" paths & bridleways) are clearly marked.
You can look at Ordnance Survey (OS) maps online at http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/getamap/
but they are usually at a scale and resolution that makes it hard to see the detail that you would want.

Walkers and Horseriders are permitted on bridleways. Cyclists are allowed to use them with the provision that they give way to other users. (http://www.iprow.co.uk/index.cfm?do=faqs&CFID=682196&CFTOKEN=25471347 )
It is a difficult area of law and enforcement, but essentially everyone must use these routes in a way that will not disturb/endanger other users.
The National Cycling Strategy website states:
"1. Cyclists may cycle on bridleways as of right but must give way to “pedestrians and persons on horseback” - Countryside Act 1968 s.30 (1)"

Sheffield City Council does have a dedicated Roghts-of-Way Officer and you can get hold of him through the usual switchboard (273 4567)

Honey planet is wrong, those on foot have the right of way on a bridlepath. You should only trot & canter when you can see that it is safe to do so. as for location of bridle paths then the suggestion for an OS map is good.

Remeber there are quite a few bridle paths criss-crossing Wadsley Common and these probably give the best opportunity for a nice long canter.

To the best of my knowledge...

Footpaths: Walkers only
Bridleways: Walkers, Horses and Cyclists, Cyclists giving way to all other trail users
By-ways: Walkers, Horses, Cyclists, Motorised traffic.

So don't be suprised if you encounter 4x4s, motorcycles and quad bikes etc on By-ways!

The only By-ways around here that I can think of are over Houndkirk Moor from Ringinglow, one in Mayfield Valley and the one up over Stanage from Redmires Resevoir.
I believe Wyming Brook is still classed as a By-way, but barriers at the top and bottom should stop cars and motorbikes using it.
