i've moved into a new place - my housemate already has a broadband connection and i want to get broadband on my PC also, so essentially it will be two PC's using the same braodband - how do i set this up? i assume we can both run off the same line i think all we need is a router or is there more to it?

he has a 2mb feed, with me using the same line will this have much effect - i.e using it at the same time will mean we both only get a 1mb feed?

thanks in advance

you need a router, a network card in each PC, and a load of cat5 cable. Or you could do it wirelessly, but itll cost more

You don't even need a router. Just a pair of network cards and a crossover ethernet cable.

You are probably better of going wireless though. Pair of USB wireless adapters is all you need (run them in ad-hoc mode. see other threads for details its been covered before).

The Network work card and crossover cable option requires your housemates computer to be switched on to use the internet

ok first, the wireless connection - he's in the attic i'm on the ground floor, so i'm not sure that that's an option? but am i right in saying that the wireless option means that his pc does not have to be turned on in order for me to connect but going down the router route (ha) plus network cards means that his PC needs to be turned on?

and also, how does running two PC's (both accessing broadband at the same time)effect the download/upload/browsing speed?

lastly, do i need to install his sofware (i.e telewest CD etc) to set an account up on my PC?

If you use a router his computer does not have to be turned on, both computers are fed the internet from the router. A wireless router for home use is unlikely to stretch up to the attic from the ground floor.

You could half and half it, however, having the wireless router on the 1st floor and a wireless receiver on the ground floor and in the attic (that could work).
