It was incorrectly reported by a local news paper that this establishment had closed. The old landlord has moved on to another pub and a NEW landlord has taken over.

If there are regulars that are mourning the death of a good pub then mourn no more an get back in there.

Its still the same old pub, just a new fella thats running it, there should be fodder on the go in the next couple of weeks when kitchen gets fitted out.

Those that are fans of Shezoke will be happy to learn that she has taken her spot on a thursday and satarday (altho its sat evening now from 8pm)

Look forward to seeing you folks down there again.

:)

I'm a sort-of regular in there, used to go for lunch so it's nice to see the kitchen opening again. Good last pub before Casbah!

Can't say I rated either Ian or Neil it was much better in years gone by had a better atmosphere.

Hope the new Landlord can bring something back to the pub I like the idea of a disco on sat evening might liven the place up a bit;)

Is the sportsman succumbing to the NRQ once they begin work?

Yes I think so I dont know how long it has left though, as they seem to keep putting the dates back for this developement.

He served me many a time, but then again I lived in there for about six years :hihi: ...... he was a better manager than many realise.

I think it is getting closed isn't it? The woman behind the bar told me they were knocking the building down and keeping the facade or something like that. This was only about two or so weeks ago after work one night.

Also said something about the new landlords only being temporary or summat.

At least that's something, if there is any truth in it. I thought it was going to get flattened.

I think it will do, but of course the phasing of the NRQ means that street won't see any demolition for about 2-4 years. I think.

The frontage is Grade 3 listed, I believe.

Ah. After the last NRQ thread, looking at the pictures, I assumed all of Cambridge St was under the hammer.

All good then, just a couple of buildings next to it then and the pepperpot next need a lil help.:)

It is a few years since I went in the Sportsman, so I couldn't call myself a reg of any sorts:suspect:, but a few mates go there. Hope it does well.

possibly the worst evening spent in the sportsman in all my years going in - football fans singing at the tops of their voices. whilst i dont mind football or their fans having a drink, these were clearly looking for trouble and goading the other customers, including our group - it was horrible. the lager was flat, they had hardly any spirits, and the coke was warm and flat too!! we left quickly and went to the dove - it was so much better. we will give the sporty another chance but i think its died a horrible death - r.i.p......

When did you go in? We went in Saturday night and didnt see any football fans singing. Although I admit there is always a strange mixture of punters in the pub but has been for a long time.
