Be aware that Skype is "port agile," meaning that if a firewall port is blocked, Skype will seek other open ports to establish a connection.

As a result, Skype could provide a back door into otherwise secure networks for Trojans, worms, viruses etc.

Personally, I'll stick to my free evening and weekend call package thanks :)

there are alternatives, I think most instant chat programs have got voice capabilities built into them these day, and if they aint good enough then there is always, vent, teamspeak, steam, firefox etc.
Where you have more control.

been using it a few years now, my phones not working anymore though so I'm thinking of getting one of those phillips ones that you don't need the pc on to use it.

My boyfriend has just gone onto 3 mobile and we use skype all the time now, which has lowered both our mobile bills. It is good when it's working and fab if you know someone who is abroad in one of the 'sister' countries but it cannot be used worldwide.

I'd say that so far we have found skype to be working well about 70% of the time, the other 30% we just use our free minutes.

skype is good because you can use it as a PAYT landline, and you can route multiple landline numbers to your computer. you can also send sms from skype, and obviously use it as in IM client too, as well as plugging in all sorts of stuff like call recording, voice stress analysis, desktop sharing etc. Also all communication on the skype network is encrypted, so companies like it.

We use it to talk to family in the US...tonight we are going to open late Christmas pressies using the video call so my dad can see his grandson open the pressies he sent him. Free.

I think things like this are great for keeping in touch with friends and family. My dad was so excited that he was nearly in tears when he asked me to get Skype so he could see his grandson in real time. Otherwise, it's years between visits and he has to make do with photos and toddler shyness on the phone.
And I found Skype has been a bit less intrusive than yahoo messenger, which we used before - big bonus.

When it comes to the video stuff, tho...not so keen on having to tidy the house, brush your hair and throw on decent clothes before answering the phone, lol. They never had to do that on The Jetsons!
