Does anybody know anywhere, preferably near the Banner Cross area, that sells locally grown and produced food. My girlfriend has expressed an interest in supporting local farmers and wants to start buying goods such as eggs, vegetables etc... which are only produced within the vicinity of Sheffield.

If anybody knows of any shops specialising in this, I would be grateful if you could let me know.

Thanks.

Several farm shops on the side roads on the way out towards Fox House where you can buy veg, eggs and possibly also meat/chicken. Also for meat/chicken & eggs there's Roney's on Sharrowvale Road. If you fancy a supermarket, Waitrose also sell local produce.

I get fresh fruit and veg delivered from Wild Star food. Here is a link to their site and list of the farms that they source from in Yorkshire: http://www.wildstarfood.com/suppliers.html
Some of it is from Whirlow Hall Farm and you can choose to have exclusively UK or Local food.

Whirlow Farm is great and they have farmers markets there sometimes too. Beware of some farm shops they sometimes import.

No they deliver all day, there is an option to leave the delivery somewhere safe if you are not going to be in. If you have any queries give them a ring or email them, they have excellent customer service.:)

I've just posted a message on the thread about getting fruit and veg from markets. It might be worth checking out the Sheffield Farmers Market every fourth sunday of the month in barkers pool (sometimes at the top of Fargate). It's all local (or fairly local) and you're buying direct from the farmer which is nice! There's more interesting stuff than normal supermarkets, apple juice that tastes of apples and not just weird sugar, venison meat, buffalo meat, really nice smoked goods. It's not ideal for everyday shopping but for a treat and some good freezable supplies it makes for a nice sunday morning out.

Just stumbled across this old thread and thought it could do with bringing back to life. There is a new website which is a great place to keep up to date with local food activities (and loads of other stuff Sheffield based). There is an event diary that lists the farmers markets and some great advice about locally sourced food. Take a look:

http://sheffieldismyplanet.co.uk/advice/lifestyle/buy-food-in-season

If you're feeling like a star why not register your promise to buy local and seasonal food as well, this will show you how much this reduces your carbon footprint as well:

Just looked at the wildstar website, it looks good and I may order a box to see. But if its local why do they sell Olive Oil from Greece!! Surely they should be selling local Rape seed oil , which is better for you and you can use it in exactly the same way.

Good suggestion, why not get in touch with wild star, you can find them on twitter if you tweet.

Do you mean finding local food grown in parson cross? I'm sure there are plenty of people growing their own around there, but if you're interested in buying local food you might need to cast your net a little wider! It would be interesting to see how well you could get on if you only bought food sourced within a set distance - may be 150 miles (so you could eat seafood!)

I produce veg, salads and fruit at home and at my allotment at Millhouses, I sell the surplus quite reasonable. I will have rhubarb in two weeks. Email higgo333@hotmail.co.uk.

Fab, I might just be in touch. Have you forced your rhubarb? I only ask because mine is barely breaking the surface at the moment.

Yes to the Whirlow Hall Farm Shop. They sell very high quality stuff and their bacon and eggs come straight from the farm and can't be beaten for quality.

There's also:

The Bridge Farm Shop butchers at the Carterknowle Road shops - good quality.

The veg shop at the Carterknowle Road shops - top quality.

The fresh fish shop at the Ecclesall Shops - top quality.

The Silverhill Larder at the Ecclesall Shops - top quality cheeses and some delicatessen stuff.

The Chocolate Box at the Ecclesall Shops - top quality Belgian chocs alongside all your childhood favourite sweets sold by the quarter

It's not ever so close to Banner Cross, but the Liberty Foods Farm Shop on Abbeydale Road South sells good quality stuff from their own farm.

If you want stuff from further afield Abbeydale Road Tesco sell asparagus from Peru and green beans from Kenya.
