I understand his contract was terminated, resulting in him slashing his wrists - so sad

Yes it is. What I also find very sad, is the way this has been dealt with. In such cases, the individual deserves privacy and respect. I am ashamed for the media of this country. BBC and ITV had no business making this the news story it became. The only people that come out of this looking good, are the least paid, least well looked-after, as usual - the emergency services. When they were hounded by press instead of being left to get on with their valuable work, they refused to give any information. It's a pity the overpaid big wigs at the beeb and itv aren't so conscientious.

To be fair on the BBC, when the story broke they didn't mention any "wrist slashing" like Sky and The Mirror did.

I hadn't heard this, and I don't actually watch the Bill anymore as I don't get to watch that much TV at all - but when I did, he was amongst my favourite characters. Have they waid why?

I heard the first report on Wednesday about 1pm on Radio2. It just said that there had been an incident in the dressing room of a Bill actor.

When he was sacked his agent told him to try and get in Casualty - he obviously took it the wrong way!

Jeff Stewart has released a statement (http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/tv_and_radio/article3172658.ece) and it sounds like he'll be OK.

"I want to reassure and thank everyone for all their support and good wishes.

"The last few days have been very difficult for me, but I am receiving the right care and help, and am surrounded by family and friends.”

He denied newspaper reports suggesting gambling debts had driven him to harm himself: "I want to confirm that I do not have any financial concerns, or indeed any other problems, as has been reported.

"I love being an actor. My work as an actor is very important to me - it's my life, and the thought of this suddenly changing had an extremely serious effect on me.

"I am feeling much better now, and am progressively improving.

"I have very much appreciated the kind messages of support from members of the public and other people in the business.

"I'd really appreciate if my privacy could be respected by the media at this time."
