View Full Version : Springtime Seaside Trip
On last Sundays walk, a couple of the ladies suggested a trip to the coast one Sunday in the near future, and of course all present agreed that it was a good idea.
The idea mooted was to go by train, and originally Bridlington was mentioned. Following some debate, it was felt that Cleethorpes might be a better alternative, due to the train journey taking an hour less, and there being a suitable 5/6 mile walk directly from the station. Sooooo, with instructions to "get it sorted", I've made some enquiries into train times and costs, and am surprised to learn that the return fare to Cleethorpes is £17.40 each, which is about £7.40 more than I thought it would be!
Bearing this in mind, I wondered what people thought about pooling our cars to try and get 3/4 people in each one, sharing the fuel costs, and having a trip to Flamborough instead, where there is nicer scenery, and fuel-wise it would cost about £25-£30 a car?
Whatever date we choose won't suit everybody I'm sure, but I was thinking the Sunday before Easter, which I think is the 16th March, then if anybody is going away for Easter, it won't clash.
Can I have some opinions please so I can make it a definite arrangement a.s.a.p.
Cheers
Scoobz
rainbow sky 09-01-2008, 19:55 I would love to do this and would be happy to pay my share for petrol if someone could give us a lift, always up for trip to seaside, reminds me of "home".
parkwoman 09-01-2008, 20:25 If it's a weekend when Parkman is in Sheffield, then I think he'll be interested because of the birdwatching opportunities at Flamborough, but the last word will be up to him as it's his car. And I'm sure he'll take his opera glasses, Scoobz
Oh - thats a few days after my birthday - I suppose we could squeeze in a post birthday drink!
Mantaspook 09-01-2008, 22:28 That’s a brilliant walk. I know because I did it last year, walking from Bridlington to Scarborough over a few days.
Hi all
I have walked from Flamborough lighthouse to the RSPB site at Bempton and back on a couple of times and can recommend it to all especially if you have binocs, to view the bird life. I could take 3 people in the car with me so i will keep a look-out to see if this comes off.
Some of us had a weekend in Filey last year and walked along the cliffs at Flamborough, and thoroughly enjoyed the views (and the birdlife). Like anywhere though, you need the weather, which on the day we were there was outstanding.
busy lizzie 10-01-2008, 21:32 sounds good and I don't mind driving if I go
neoteric 10-01-2008, 22:40 Sounds a good idea - I do like to partake of a nice Fish and Chip lunch when I go to the seaside -any recommendations. I'm also OK for driving and giving a lift to 3 others.

Well thats offers for 5 cars, which is enough for 20 people, so from that we'll make it a definite :).
Neoteric must have read my mind too, and a post walk chippie meet was something I was going to suggest :D . A mooch round either Filey or Brid after the walk, and a round of fish and chips would round the day off nicely I think.
billysmum 11-01-2008, 07:26 Yipee off to the seaside.Really looking foreward to this, the views of the cliffs are amazing .Last time I went I saw more Pigeons living on them than Gulls .Wont be partaking in any fish and chips, but ice cream at the seaside is a must. It's the law don't you know.
Can i come please with me bucket and spade? :D
Can i come please with me bucket and spade? :D
Yeah, sure, a 6-8 mile walk carrying a bucket and spade :loopy:, what you going to use them for 400 foot up a cliff, any idea?
Nooka
you could always use the bucket to carry any crabs you catch with your long handle fishing net.
Sherwood1 12-01-2008, 19:54 I would like to come to the seaside too, I will make sandcastles with you Nooka!

At last someone who knows what to do with a bucket and spade! Some of the other members must have had very sad childhoods! ;)
canada_girl 13-01-2008, 18:29 I don't know how I missed this thread, so sorry for my late reply?? Flamborogh was fantastic when we walked along the coastal path in the fall - I'm definitely up for a trip up there again!
I can take two in my car; perhaps it makes most sense if Rainbow sky comes with me seeing as how we're neighbours?? (That is if she wants to :P ) Although I'm sure we can sort cars closer to the time when we know for sure who is coming.

Thanks Canada Girl for offer of lift, I would like to accept for me, and no doubt Callum will come along as well. Obviously I will help towards petrol expenses. Thanks again.
Neoteric and I had a chat today about times and meeting paces and so on, and have a couple of suggestions to make. Firstly, to make the most of the day we thought that an early start would be best, with a meeting time of no later than 9 o clock.
The next idea was regarding the meeting point. As quite a few people are coming from the South of Sheffield, we don't think there's any point meeting in the centre of town, but maybe we could meet on the Parkway either at the Travel Lodge on the Prince of Wales Road, or Big W further down.
Finally, fish and chips at Brid is apparently a must for some people, so Brid will be the after walk stop if thats ok. I'm sure no-one will object

Fabulous! That's my car full then.
Albert T Smith 15-01-2008, 19:10 Would it be better if someone in the group, or someone who holds a PSV license is persuaded to go and we hire a elderly bus or coach for the weekend.
Ladies up stairs, gents down stairs.
Uncle Albert could sit on the stairway making sure that no hanki panki goes on.
I can write a note for your mother, if need be. ( min't need a bribe!!)
I can locate a calor gas cooker and pans.
If Canada Girls hubby is coming. He can cook the food.
We could also obtain the telephone number of the Lighthouse Keeper at Flamborough Head, which is close to Bempton Cliffs?
Or we could hire a couple of 6 - 8 berth Caravans at Reigton Gap (If it still exist ) for the long weekend. (Thurs/ Friday to Mon/Tuesday ).
Reighton gap is just north of Bempton.
The best time to see the Sea Birds is in the breeding season. May.
They follow the fish shoals as they move northwards. That is why they choose Bempton to breed.
The Gannet, Puffin, Guillemot & Kittiwakes are present then. They may also be, Shearwater and/or Petrels, but they only make landfall at night.
In the early sixties Bempton was the farest north that Kittawakes bred. Can anyone confirm if this is true now? At that time also six pair of Gannets bred with other younger ones going through the imitation process. I believe that they are four/six year old before they can breed.
Thanks for the information regarding the birds Albert, I think you can add Cormorants to the list, but I'm not sure about Puffins, I thought Anglesey was the nearest point where these could be found,
Regarding your suggestions for the elderly bus and caravans at Reighton Gap, well, what can I say?......... I know..........aaaaaaaarrrrgggghhhhhh.
Theres your answer
Now why don't you put your name down and come and entertain us for the day on the 17th March :? It promises to be a really good day out, you'll enjoy it.

I'll come back on that. When I was last up on the cliffs in May, 1962. I don't think Comorants were up this far north.
I do know only six Gannets bred but things have change a lot over the years.
Hi scoobz
you can find Puffins at Bempton Cliffs but i'm not sure about Shearwaters, the last place I saw them was on the island of Canna off the west coast of Scotland. Also I photographed the Sea Eagles and Golden Eagles and have a great picture of a Golden Eagle.

When you say ' Sea Eagle ' do you mean the ' Osprey '?
Is Canna one of the Inner Hebrides?
With the climate change over the past fifty years or so I expect the food chain will determine where a lot a species now breed.
I wonder if records would show that the climate change which we read about as actually happened previously via the past breeding patterns.

I stand corrected, and look forward to hopefully seeing a whole bunch of them when we get there!
Hi Albert
the sea eagle is the largest UK bird it has white tail feathers which along with it's size differentiate it from the golden eagle. The osprey is a smaller bird and found mainly around the Loch Garten area to my knowledge. Yes Canna is one of the Inner Hebrides along with Rum and Muck, it is the least populated island with no shops only the tea shop which serves great food when open.
Albert
I forgot to mention the Isle of Eigg.

I knew it as the,' White Tailed Eagle '. The nearest place it bred years ago was Faroe or Iceland.
It did breed here in the 1800s but was shot to extinction.
I'm please to read that its back.
Scoobz. I doubt if any Puffins will be at Bempton in March because they would have to fly to the Bay of Biscay for there food!! Not only hungry when they got there, Hungry after flying all the way back!!
I think that we've had enough of `bird talk`, so lets maybe keep back on to the topic from now on of a Spring Day Out if we can :suspect: So if anyone has anything constructive to say on the subject...........please carry on :)

But no details except going to Flamborough exist.
Are we going to walk along the Cliff tops to Rieghton or Bridlington?
Having a round walk or build Sand Castle's whilst I sing to Scoobz. ' As the Tide Rushes In ? '.

There is no plan Albert. Just a suggestion was made to have a day out at the coast and it's gone on from there.
To be honest, all the people who have said they want to go aren't too bothered at this stage about an itinerary, or where the walk will take them. I think a Group decision will be taken a lot nearer to the day, or even on the day itself as to where we walk, and for how far. I suppose the weather will also determine what we do as well.
Having said all that, I would imagine that we will probably walk from Flamborough towards Bempton, and then at some point take the same route back. Unless someone knows a round route that doesn't involve walking on water or getting wet of course!

It just a good lazy day out where I will be able to bring my bucket and spade to biuld castles. I'm going to try to make this bbecause its a long time since I was up at Flamborough.
Do we have the light house keepers phone number?

No Albert we do not have the lighthouse keepers number. In fact I would imagine it's an automated lighthouse the same as most lighthouses around the country are these days. (I suppose you're going to tell me different though :))
Why would we need it anyway, are you going to bring a rubber dinghy or something?
Further to previous post.................there has been no lighthouse keepers at Flamborough since 1996! Sorry Albert, hope this doesn't spoil your day.
Just found this site for more info on Flamborough. www.manorhouse.clara.net/main/lighthouse.htm

We'll need it to ask him,' if its raining!! '.

That would be a nice place to stay for a weekend.
Whilst looking at the birds nesting during May early June.
Could hire, or join a boating party going close up to the cliffs
( I note no beer )
I've bumped this thread back up a bit cos it's only 4 weeks away now and we need to be sorting lifts out soon. Before that though, can everybody confirm that they're coming, and any new people stick their hands up too please?
As it stands at the minute, Sherwood and Billysmum are with me, so that leaves room for one more in my car, which might be Nooka (if she wants to!). Canada Girl and Cookman are taking Rainbow Sky and Callum, so thats their car full. This leaves Alligin, Neoteric, Hemlock and Alberto, Busy Lizzie and Albert to sort out who's going with who, if everybody is still going that is.
Also, can I ask much-loved regulars (creep!) Linchpinlulu, Fuzzle, Neily and Louise, Mardy and T, Dougie3, Parkwoman and anybody else that I might have forgotten, to tell me whether they are thinking about coming please.
I suppose Vicar of Dibley types aren't allowed Sundays off, which is a shame cos it would be nice if you could get for this one Inkie :).
neoteric 18-02-2008, 20:46 This leaves Alligin, Neoteric, Hemlock and Alberto, Busy Lizzie and Albert to sort out who's going with who, if everybody is still going that is.
I am offering to drive and can take 3 others - will be leaving out from the Norfolk Park area but can organise pick ups to suit.

:( Sorry, I can't come this weekend, unfortunately. However, I will be being entertained beautifully by my daughter and the rest of her orchestral chums the evening before, so will have a lovely weekend anyway :). Oh and Saul will be here too, that weekend, so he can't come either!
Hope you all have a great day out. :D
LinchpinLulu 19-02-2008, 08:07 Might well be there, but can't offer a lift, nor do I need one! :suspect:
parkwoman 19-02-2008, 12:08 I'd like to come but I'd need a lift, please, 'cos I don't think Rob will be here that weekend (Arsenal are at home).

To be fair to anyone in need of a lift, can you let us know whether you're coming or not when you know yourself Lizzie. Cheers.
rainbow sky 02-03-2008, 16:13 Callum and I are no longer coming on this one.
Just to re-count; looks like 4 people in my car, 4 in Neoterics, 2 in Canada Girl/Cookmans, Busy Lizzie not sure, Linchpinlulu not sure, Alligin not sure, Neily................sulking over the loss of his stick?
Have I missed anybody out, or is there anybody else thinking of coming?

LinchpinLulu 07-03-2008, 16:42 Mr L and I are hoping to make a weekend of this. :) Work commitments mean we can't be definite yet, but will be able to contact you by phone to see where you all are. Do you have any more details yet , Oh mighty leaders??
Mr L and I are hoping to make a weekend of this. :) Work commitments mean we can't be definite yet, but will be able to contact you by phone to see where you all are. Do you have any more details yet , Oh mighty leaders??
 sarcasm gets you everywhere!
Yes, the leaders have conflabbed and a plan is in place.
The Plan is to meet at the car park next to the lighthouse at 11 a.m. The lighthouse can you believe is on Lighthouse Road which is a continuation of Flamborough Road to the North of Bridlington.
We're going to take the coast path which goes towards Reighton Gap for a couple of miles, and then if its windy and cold maybe head off on a walk which carries on inland to get back to the starting point. Or if the weather's not too bad, we'll carry on to Bempton Cliffs, and return along the same route. All told the walk will be either 7 or 8 miles, depending on the route.
We've decide that it will be a steady stroll as the views are so good, which will mean there will be lots of stops for the photograhers/birdwatchers/scenery taker inners :)
I think we're going to round the day off in Brid for some fish and chips. This has been especially requested by the greedy leaders.
busy lizzie 15-03-2008, 16:22 sadly I can't join you for this tomorrow as I am not feeling very well. Have a great day and see you next Week
Sorry to hear that lizzie, hope you're soon feeling better and spare a thought for us brave souls who look like we're going to get soaked tomorrow, and may just end up joining you on your sick-bed!
LinchpinLulu 15-03-2008, 17:37 We didn't feel inspired to venture up there this morning-thick fog and drizzle here all day, so we won't be there tomorrow either.
Wrap up warm!
Weather looking good according to BBC, sarnies packed and in the fridge, boots all cleaned, clothes all ready, early night and then off we go at an unearthly Sunday morning time for hopefully a fun-packed day on the bracing east coast!
Will I need my factor 15?
Well what a fantastic day trip to the seaside!!:D I thought it was just Skegness that was supposed to be so bracing! We had fantastic views of the cliffs & sea along the coast. We crossed the odd ravine or two - (only to find we shouldn't have done - but I blame the younger element for leading us oldies astray:hihi:)
We had wind, wind, & just for a change, a bit more wind - but no rain:clap:
We didn't get 'lost' as such, but SOME people of higher rank than others chose to ignore signposts to lighthouses, insisting there are 2, so that must be the wrong way.:hihi: But it was deliberate of course,;) so we could have a pint before getting back to the car. We then went in convoy to Brid where we had a brisk walk along the front & had fish & chips - some had a lot more fish than others:o
Then, some were not satisfied & had an ice cream  whilst freezing on the way back to the cars!
Roll call was Neoteric, Scoobz, Billysmum, Hemlock, Mr Hemlock, Park Woman, Alligin, Canada Girl, Cookman, Nooka & Sherwood1.
Thanks to neo for the lift - the heated seats were much appreciated on the way back. Sorry we were not much company on the journey back - so much fresh air made us rather tired.
Next time we must build sandcastles on the beach!!
canada_girl 16-03-2008, 19:01 Fantastic day out and despite being a bit windy no one toppled over the side into the sea and rain held off just in time for us to pop back in to the car for the ride home.
How you all manage to eat ice cream in anything less than 5 degrees will remain a mystery to me!!
And for those that followed us down into the ravine. . .. if we jumped off a bridge would you lot!! Apparently so!
What a brill day out! Loved every minute of it. I think bracing is definatley the word of the day! Thanks to Cookman for the lift and to everyone else for being such good company. I have put my photos up here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/cazmellars), not very good quality from my phone but they capture the mood of the day I think. :D
billysmum 16-03-2008, 19:30 Wow what a fantastic day at the seaside. Thankyou to Alligin for the lift and the offer of his Mars bar:D
Hope Nooka is ok after her tumble, at least twice I thought it was going to be me, that ravine was horrible.
Ice cream is allowed at anytime and apparently so are donuts:hihi:
Thankyou to everyone who made this day so special.
See you all after Easter, try not to eat too many eggs:gag:

OMG, the ice creams look amazing let alone the views:hihi:
We did NOT get lost, and the wrong turning was in fact a deliberate action, as the sign saying "Lighthouse this way" was in fact a red herring which would have taken us to the haunted lighthouse that no-one ever talks about :o , and not to the lighthouse that we needed to get back to. So there, thats the real reason for the route that took us to the pub :hihi: Well, that and the need for some people to have a comfort break.
Anyway, as everybody else has said, that was a lovely day out we enjoyed today in the company of some great friends who it is a pleasure to be with. It was exactly the type of day that I hoped it would be, with some challenging walking conditions, great views and a cracking spirit amongst the people who were there. Everybody helping and encouraging each other through the tricky bits, and all agreeing exactly when to turn back, where and when to stop and eat, and when to have a few minutes break to take in the sights.
Glad everybody seemed to enjoy it, perhaps we can do it again some time and starting at Thornwick Bay walk up to Bempton next time?
Finally, boy was that a portion and half of fish and chips at the Dolphin Restaurant in Brid or what :o. How anybody could manage a bag of donuts after that amazes me!
neoteric 16-03-2008, 20:46 Just going to add to the WHAT A FANTASTIC DAY AT THE SEASIDE postings. A great walk the cliff tops with fantastic views -some great photos there Nooka - especially the one of me avoiding camera shake on the cliff top - but unfortunately I managed to get lots of salt spray onto my lens so had to bin a lot of my pics..
Then into Bridlington for Jumbo fish and chips followed by an ice cream - a nice little snack but I'm beginning to feel peckish again:)
I noticed when I was going through my pics that the one I took of the cliffs after the first helicopter picture you can see a man perched on the edge of the cliff - so it may heve been a real rescue after all? and we all thought that they had been sent out to look for Neilys stick:hihi:
I've put my pics up here (http://picasaweb.google.com/neotericwalks/FlamboroughHead16March2008) - some are a bit splodgy because of the salt spray - also note the unusual scarecrows they have around there:hihi:

parkwoman 16-03-2008, 22:15 What can I possibly add to what's already been said. It was a great day. An exhilarating walk, great company as usual and delicious fish & chips at the Dolphin Restaurant to round it off. My photos here (http://picasaweb.google.com/parkwoman/SFFlamborough16Mar08).
Some smashing pics from everybody, especially like the ones of the birds (inc the scarecow woman) and of the surf/rocks/cliffs. Captures the day perfectly.
Incidentally, I saw the guy on the edge of the cliff through my binoculars while we were there, and he was actuaaly fishing. Now whether he got in to trouble after that, I don't know.
Like the new hat Scoobz, big improvement on the last one:hihi:
The hat is a stop-gap until the original turns up, don't kid yourself that the old one's not going to resurface at some point!
Thanks all for a good day out.
Great photos Park Woman, Nooka & Neoteric! I think we all managed to get fantastic results despite the strong winds which made focussing really difficult. Nooka - even camera phones produce good pics - it's not the equipment, but what you do with it that counts!
I think between us we really captured the cliffs & the weather!
The contrast with the photos from everyone at Brid are great! Perhaps the 'gluttony' aspect of the walk should be played down a bit - we don't want folk to think we enjoy our food do we:hihi:
billysmum 17-03-2008, 19:20 The photos are great, well done. Hemlock what do you mean " it must be love" I was actually slapping the back of his hand:hihi:
Does anyone know how far we walked?

Sorry abot the delay - my GPS makes that 6.6 miles for the main walk. Probably comes in about 7.5 miles if we add the stroll along the seafront at Bridlington and around 10 mile if we add the accumulated length of the chip shop fish we ate together:hihi:
Have a great time in the West country - did anyone mention snow:huh:
