View Full Version : Life without a car
I will lose my car next thursday, after having one for a lifetime!!! what am I going to do? how can I live without my car? town most days, Doctors, Dentist, Hospital, Visiting my crippled Sister, Trips into Derbyshire, Holidays in Norfolk, Bridlington, Touring Scotland, Cornwall.
Parked outside the door, it was my companion and my friend, now it is going and I will have to walk and stand waiting for buses in the cold, rain, wind, snow, slipping on the ice, wet leaves, I shall finish up in hospital with broken bones and I am crippled with Arthritis, sad but true, hope I win the lottery soon!!!

tinajones 14-09-2003, 17:56 you poor thing! you'll have to join the paupers on the buses and put up with the sounds of mobile phones, walkmans, uncouth children and sit next to smelly people, fat people and ill people.
on the plus side its more environmentally friendly, cheaper, sociable, relaxing and gives you time to read your book or the free metro paper.

WTF? Ali... you gone all right wing on us?
tinajones 14-09-2003, 18:18 trust me DB, i get the bus to work and people often (blokes especially) take 2/3 of the double seat so i end up perching on the corner. i think they forget that females have hips and thus need the full 1/2 of the seat that we paid for! so maybe that should be greedy people not fat!
ill people: when they have a cold and sit sniffing/coughing their way through the journey.
smelly people: their are a few that get on my bus. this also includes me when i have been to the gym and fancy a bath when i get home instead of a shower in the changing rooms. (sorry!)
alchresearch 15-09-2003, 11:53 The trouble is that there is no suitable middle ground. It's either a car or nothing and that is very sad.
I think they should offer an incentive for Smart Cars, perhaps zero VAT when purchasing them, no (or low) road tax, and cheap insurance.
Or, how about cheap road tax for pensioners? They get free TV licences over a certain age.
costessey 15-09-2003, 11:58 not a drink driving ban then!
i suffered 6 months without a car a couple of years ago...buses in sheffield not bad, but crossing the county border totally different.
I've often got to norfolk on the train without paying, so no problems there!!
just get taxis to the essential visits, probably cheaper than running a car
I'd give up the internet access before giving up the car.

You poor thing Tinajones,
Having to sit near ruffians, mobiles, ill people, old smelly people, it must be terrible for you, not having enough room on the seat for your bum, why? is it so BIG? and what a shame having to ride with the paupers who can't afford cars. Everyone say aaaaarrrr.

(That and the fact that we've eaten all the pies!) :P

a few little inches is not a good enough reason to sit with your legs in a wide 'V' shape.
today on the bus i politelly asked a man if he could move up and he just glared at me, i felt so imtimidated that i went and sat next to a big mouldy tramp. I AM NEVER GETTING THE BUS EVER AGAIN!!!
1Man&hisBMW 17-09-2003, 02:27 Without my car I would just be 1Man&His......
:)
tinajones - I'm fairly tall, and have rather long legs - for me, it's not only the afore reason mentioned by Tony Ruscoe, but also the fact that there is not enough leg room to close my legs on most busses (especially the Yorkshire Terrier busses).
Most of the time, my knees are in agony because I'm trying to take up as little room as possible, and they're crushed against the seat in front. I can see your point to a certain extent - many people are reluctant to let others sit next to them, but I always feel rather embarrassed because I know that's probably what others are thinking of me (that I just don't want someone sitting next to me, and therefore take up as much room as possible).
I can't really comment on how much I'd miss not having a car though, since I've never had one, never learned to drive one, and have no intention of driving. But I suppose that it'd be like most things - you get used to having something, miss it when it's gone, but eventually get used to not having it. Swings and roundabouts :)
