View Full Version : Making a web page/site help
louisbourg 08-01-2008, 20:04 all i want to do , is get a website address , that i can do for my brother , he is opening a shop , and really what i have in mind is just putting a few pics on there and some information about what he will be selling , then be able to update it on a weekly basis
its not going to be online ordering or anything like that
can anyone give me a easy bit of advice :help:
i have had a look on 123 something site that i just read about on another thread , i did look for the name i wanted and it is available , and says it will cost £2.99 ...2 years , but then i got a bit scared , is that an easy site to use ??
or any other help is appreciated
thank you very much sharon
Yep, that's a really simple and straightforward option to get started. Once you want to do something more than a front page, then ask again.
If you or your bro' have some webspace provided by your ISP, you can direct your domain name towards that, rather than using what 123 (http://www.123-reg.co.uk/) provide.

You need to own the domain name to be able to point it somewhere which is what the £2.99 is for.
Yes it is a good site for purchasing your domain name.

i have put in the name i want and it is available £6.something for 2 years ??(then what happens after 2 years ?? do i just buy the name again
it says i get a free header page ........ i think that that will be great to start with :), as i just want to get a www address , and put some info on and maybe some pics as i said before
if i do this , will it be able to be found on google ?????? or it that like a different thing all together ??
i did kind of make a blog, but when i looked for it on google , it didn't come up with anything , so i think i might delete that

After 2 years you get the choice of renewing (known as first dibs/bagsying/any better Sheff expressions?). If you decide not to renew, it goes back into the public pot for someone else to take.
My advice is buy the name you want from 123 for two years - that way it's yours. If you think of a better name later, then buy that from 123 too. If you decide that the first name you chose was rubbish, you've only wasted the price of a pint a year!
louisbourg 09-01-2008, 09:09 that sounds like good advice maggi , i got exactly the name i wanted
so thanks very much

sallonoroff 09-01-2008, 09:33 You just need a webpage to put up at that address now... :)
.

You need to tell google it is there. Think of it logically, say if you had a guest visiting you, you can't expect them to be psychic and know your address without you telling them.
There is a link on google somewhere for it, if you can't find it put "add domain name google" in the search box and it should come up. You'll need to do the same with yahoo and msn too. The way to feature highly on the search page helps if you specialise in something, but also if you are linked from lots of other sites too.
louisbourg 09-01-2008, 16:05 well , thanks very much for the great help ,
so far .......i have been on 123-reg
it has got the exact name that we want ... for 2 years

i have been reading and reading on the site , so i hope this is going to be what i think i want :)
as you have said on here , i can always ask at a later date
so i thik i am going to go ahead and see what i get and hopefully it will be straight forward enough
