View Full Version : Will my baby look daft?
gina2007 08-01-2008, 17:41 Okay. Random thing...
I've bidded on some little trainers on eBay for BabyCharlie. If I put them on him, will I look like a typical 'Chav teenage $!@g..' mother whos on benefits blah blah and the rest...?
Heres the link..

2 Pairs..I couldn't help myself, just so little and cute!
I've got this fear of being an easy target for oldies in co-op cafe :hihi:
x
*Peaches* 08-01-2008, 17:42 At least your putting shoes on your kid, some don't bother and it makes me really mad
I think they'll look pretty cute on you're baby!
gina2007 08-01-2008, 17:47 Thank you. I'm already an easy target for em in cafes as it is!! Especially those who queue from like 10am til 12 for hot dinners (Bless um!) they murmur things and you know full well they're talking about you cause they stare and talk and it's abit scary. But ahh atleast i'm not stuffing maccy d's down my pregnant self!
Being young and pregnant doesn't make you less of a person, dress your child how you please:) I do and I love the way my girls look - obviously it's to my taste but they seem to like most of it now they are big enough to express favourites etc.
Enjoy dressing your child, he won't let you one day .
I haven't looked the trainers - just remember they need soft shoes for good foot development until they start walking, only then do they need hard soles.
Raychul69 08-01-2008, 18:15 I love little trainers like this for babies regardless of make style etc.... When I found out I was having a boy I found the cutest pair of rockport sandals on e-bay. The hubby was saying I needed to get him some jewellery and a burberry shirt when I told him but when they arrived he soon shut up and agreed on how cute they were :)
babychickens 08-01-2008, 18:21 At least your putting shoes on your kid, some don't bother and it makes me really mad
I didn't put shoes on my baby until she was able to walk. Does that make you mad? Why does it bother you? Is it any of your business what other people's children are wearing as long as they're not too hot/cold/tight/loose? Babies don't need shoes, they're entirely cosmetic at best (bearing in mind that there are other ways of keeping a baby's feet warm), and at worst they can really damage development of the baby's feet. Since I have had hereditary bunions all my life I wouldn't wish malformed feet on anyone, let alone my own child. In addition, wearing shoes makes it harder for children to learn to use all the muscles in their ankles and feet whilst walking. However, I can't say it bothers me when I see anyone else putting trainers on their kid, because it isn't my business or my choice.
Gina - old ladies will talk about you whether you're Ms Perfect 2008 or not. If you want trainers for your baby and they fit properly, you go for it. At least you'll be young and lively still when your kids have left home...I'll be old and knackered in my 50s.

When I see babies in this weather with no blankets, shoes or socks on and the parents have thick coats on yes, it makes my blood boil
At least your putting shoes on your kid, some don't bother and it makes me really mad
Babies feet are very soft and they shouldn't really be put in shoes which may mould the foot in the wrong shape until they are walking and even then special shoes espescially for new walkers. I don't see how people like me who have done their research can make you mad??? Shoes like star child and robeez are great but i only use them to stop junior pulling his socks off and putting them in his mouth for the millionth time.
Gina i wouldn't worry about what people say to you its only very rude people who would dare comment to you about how you bring up your children. You sound to me like your doing a fab job already i hope all goes well for you with your labour i'm keeping my fingers crossed for you. Look forward to hearing all about it.

Plain Talker 08-01-2008, 18:32 They are incredibly "dinky", cute and Schweeeeet, those trainers!
Depending on how expensive they are, when bidding ends, you may end up "sick as a parrot" if baby bump decides to kick them off (As is their favourite game) and you lose one! that's the qualms I would have about dressing a baby in expensive designer-stuff.
the other thing I would say is, even though they have not been worn (As I understand it?) to take advice about
a) how they fit:- don't put too-small shoes on baby as you can damage their feet, and
b) are they hard-soled trainers that you have bought, for a pre-walking baby? you see, recieved wisdom is that you should not shoe a baby in hard-soled shoes until they are walking, as, again, the hard soles can damage baby's feet.
I'm not criticising, BTW, I'm just pointing this out, as I'm sure you want nothing but the healthiest and the best for your babe.
babychickens 08-01-2008, 18:32 When I see babies in this weather with no blankets, shoes or socks on and the parents have thick coats on yes, it makes my blood boil
It used to bother me, too, except that now I I have a wriggling and lively toddler I have the choice of either not going out ever, or wrapping babybaby up only for her to kick blankets off/take shoes/socks/hat/gloves (and coat) off given half a chance ad infinitum until I have no energy left to fight her into wearing more clothes anymore. No matter how hard you try sometimes the kid just won't have more clothes on and will get colder than the parent would like them to be.
Sorry to offend you with my chosen method of parenting.
*Peaches* 08-01-2008, 18:35 There's a difference in being able to see a child thats obviously taken its shoes/socks off, compared to the kids that haven't had any put on in the first place, you and I both know that

I have to agree with babychickens i doubt their is many parents who actually take their children out without their socks on but unfortunately they do either drop off or are pulled off, is that really the worst crime a parent can commit? ha if so you best never come to my house as on most days my toddler has removed most of the clothes on her bottom half and they baby rarely has his feet covered, shock horror.
*Peaches* 08-01-2008, 18:42 Why are you shooting me down in flames for having an opinion? Its only the same as you having one. Granted my kids don't always wear shoes indoors, but I'd not take them out in public without them, and especially not in this weather

I can endorse these comments as my wife used to work in the kids department of a Clarks store, they shouldn’t be wearing shoes until they are walking.
Even tight socks or baby grows can deform very small feet hence the reason you will see babies with bare feet.
Walking and first shoes
“A baby who's just started walking takes 176 steps a minute!
Experts say that the longer a child is allowed to walk without shoes, the better as this will allow their feet to develop naturally. Certainly when your toddler starts learning to walk indoors, let her walk barefoot as long as the floor is clean and safe, as this allows the feet to develop and strengthen without restriction”

I don't believe i am shooting you down but you did say people who don't put shoes on their babies ie me ,make you mad. I believe you may be misguided as i am actually following expert advice. If what you mean is babies with out shoes or socks are being neglected that is a different matter, but i think you'll find the majority of people do not let it intentionally happen, your post is a little inflammatory i think you'll find.
*Peaches* 08-01-2008, 18:57 I wasn't directing the post soley at you. I am only going on my beliefs and the fact that somethings I have seen recently make me despise the attitudes of some people towards thier kids and thier welfare

sorry peaches, Im with babychick on this one ... no ones trying to shoot you down, just offer a logical and sensible explanation for what youve seen ... and they (as am i) are guided by experience. I wish i had a penny for every odd sock Ive come home with
gina2007 08-01-2008, 19:38 One of the pairs is deff, soft soles but the other i'm not sure on. I know about the hard soles..damage feet etc. So if they are i'll not put them on him. I've not bidded loads, £3 on one pair £5 on another. Hopefully they're both soft. He's mainly just got socks so I thought a nice pair of trainers :hihi: i'll most likely be outbidded at 15seconds left (Just like the other day..GRR) thank you for your comments and opinions :)
Gina, you do what you like and don't worry about the old trouts who will tut at you. The amount of questions you've put on here tell me you'll be one of the best mums going, you're thinking about everything, and I feel ashamed not to be doing the same! :(
Shoes are OK so long as they're not worn all the time and they fit. There's no need for them in the house or if a kid's in a snowsuit. Ours doesn't have any because I think he's too young and the way I dress him to go out he doesn't need them. I often keep him in a simple vest and bodysuit because it's so much easier to whip on and off. He does have a couple of 'proper' outfits like trousers and tops but I find them impractical. I have to laugh at the clinic when mums are struggling with the fancy clothes and they galre at me for our lad, dressed in hia jim-jams, but it's so easy ;)

By the way, you can get soft baby shoes in Mothercare if you like the look of shoes - ours has some cutesy traditional bootees but you can get them that look almost exactly like shoes but are completely soft.
He also has a flat cap which he's not quite big enough for yet. I thought he ought to have one, being a mini-Yorkshireman :D
gina2007 08-01-2008, 19:55 :hihi: My sister used to just put my niece in a vest and bodysuit. I must admit. I've got LOADS of clothes. Dungaree's, trousers, tee's, jackets, coats, booties, socks, mittens, hats, you name it..and i've probs got it. Or considered buying it on numerous occasions. See, now my OH is getting mad. He's stopped me from going out as often. As he doesn't want me in the middle of town with broken waters too ashamed to do anything :hihi: so he's told me to only go out when/if I need too..So now I spend my days on eBay, SF, Bebo etc.. And I make bids, in his username which are attached to his bank details. So every few days when his statement shows "06750-*Insert random area* £10.47" He goes ape at me but i'm sure the last few i'm bidding on. ARE going to be the last. Hopefully.. the post man is getting pretty narked at having to bang on the door each morning :D

gina2007 08-01-2008, 20:09 :D I went through all his stuff and there's tons of the stuff. All my clothes are currently in a box under the bed (No storage and temp home) But I have 1 box, OH has 2. Charlie however has a small suitcase, with just bibs/hats/mittens in. Has a large suitcase of vests and bodysuits and a medium suitcase of tops/trou etc. Oh and another small suitcase of 'extras' those sale items "6-9mnths summer coat" 99p i HAD to buy it..cause he'll be around 7-8months when its summer :hihi: I'm glad im not the only one..BUT I am the owner of the first pair of trainers! I got outbid at 1min8secs so was like hmm ahh stuff it.. £4 BID! :D £3.40 plus £2.25 postage..not bad me thinks for brand new trainers :hihi:
littleblue 08-01-2008, 20:16 Can you hurry up and have this baby please?? The blanket is nearly knitted!
gina2007 08-01-2008, 20:22 :hihi: I don't think he wants to come out! Ooh Thank you littleblue :D

We go through three bibs a day with 'possets' and spits and things like that. If he has any accidents then there's been four clothes changes in one day, too! Including for his parents when they've been sicked/weed/pooed on!
Adams has some real bargains right now - but the top tip is Primark for really thick, decent quality vests and sleepsuits, plus some very durable double sided bibs.
babychickens 08-01-2008, 21:07 I'm not sure you can have too many clothes for a baby, to be honest. OK, so some aren't even going to have the tags removed, but I was working on the thought that after babybaby had finished with them, I'd just give all the clothes to the next close friend having a baby with the instruction taht they could use them all, even the really nice expensive stuff, on the condition that they added their own baby clothes to the collection before they gave them back, and got rid of anything that wasn't usable anymore. The clothes are now all with the second close friend...I'll just have to demand them back when babybaby2 needs them (in about 3 years! I doubt I'll recognise any of the clothes by then!)
I'm seeing it as a recycling scheme ;).
gina2007 08-01-2008, 21:27 Well, i've had pass downs from OH friend. My friends sister. Plus, my sisters friend. So, majority of them are second hand. I also bought loads from the charity shop I volunteered at. Little luxuries like a new pair of shoes, a nice big thick coat etc I think that's most i've bought, that cost abit. Infact.. The dearest thing i've bought is a dressing gown (:hihi:) £9 from mothercare! apart from that... the rest is like.. £1! After that, i'm either going to give them to a friend who's having a baby OR give them away on here. If still no-one takes them... charity shop they go :D Just to let you all know.. 4 contractions today. One this morning 9.30am, one at 3.45pm, one at 7.15pm then one at 10pm!!! :D:D
BobbyBunny 09-01-2008, 16:39 I agree with the others Gina, whatever the grumpy old people say, just let it go straight over you head :) You obviously really care about your baby, you are making an effort by even asking whether or not to get those shoes.. I think they are lovely :) and as long as your baby is healthy its all good in my eyes :D
At least your putting shoes on your kid, some don't bother and it makes me really mad
You are joking arn't you? Babies shouldn't wear any shoes until they are walking, it can damage their little, soft feet.
gina2007 09-01-2008, 18:25 The shoes i've got are soft soles. Thankyou for the comment Bobbybunny, trying to let everyones comments go over my head, but sometimes it gets too much! :)
BobbyBunny 09-01-2008, 18:30 I can understand where you're coming from, I get quite a few negative comments aswell but I've had so many now that I just ignore them. Say something good or keep your mouth shut is my opinion - there is no room in my brain anymore for criticism :)
9 days Gina? I bet you can't wait :D
rubydazzler 09-01-2008, 18:39 Gina, speaking as an old trout (but not one that tuts at people, well not often anyway ;) ) I have to say you seem like one of the nicest and most sensible people I've ever read ... you certainly seem to have your head on straight about most things anyway.
Your baby is going to be one very lucky child, especially if his/her dad is like you, too.
In the winter, many moons again, those bag things that attach to the buggy and you put their legs into were great for keeping feet and legs warm, cos it is almost impossible to keep babies shoes and socks on. Can you still get them, trying to remember what they were called. Cosy Toes?
ps edit to say, the shoes were very cute so no wonder you wanted them!
babychickens 09-01-2008, 18:43 yep, cosytoes indeed. Invaluable for keeping Miss Fidgetchickens vaguely warm in freezing weather, and a useful place to stash everything that I don't have enough hands to carry. Strongly recommend them. Babybabychickens is now 18 months old and still using the same one that we got when she was born, and there's still plenty of space left in there.
I didn't buy any shoes for my lad when he was born, his feet were so small it would have been a waste of time, but its entirely up to you, its your child and I think its marvelous that your planning in advance.
Just on a side note, gina, I've got a carrier bag of baby boys clothes ages 3-6mths if you want them, i've listed them for sale for a fiver, but you can have them if you're able to meet up or pop round to collect.
we got a foot muff with our pram from mothercare and this has been perfect for keeping his tootsys warm. my lad still doesn;t wear shoes everyday, well only if we're going on an outing and he wants to look smart ;)
gina2007 09-01-2008, 18:48 Yeah, cosytoes, pram liners, footmuffs <--Diff names, same job :D I've got a footmuff, came with the pram.
Yeah 9 days Bobbybunny! Getting close now.. Scared too though.
Whats everyones thoughts on the age a child should fly? Thinking of going to menorca or spain mainland. Sept time. My sister took my niece to australia when she was 10months and came back when she was 11 months, but is it too young? Should we wait til he's older or leave him with family for a week?
gina2007 09-01-2008, 18:51 Jen13kd- Thank you for the offer. Where abouts are you, i'll pay for them if you want. I feel rather silly when getting free items! He'll probs never wear the trainers, it's just the fact I can show people and say "Like his trainers?" :hihi:
i haven't flown yet, I flew to cuba for my wedding when I was 7wks preggers (it was fun puking for 9hours in the tiny loo) I'd guess you should be ok to fly once the baby is in a fairly good routine, usually this is at about 3months. I'd happily fly with my son now, not too sure if I'd want to do a long haul flight though as I dont think you get a seat for an infant. Might be worth checking the airlines policy

Oh I'm sure he will wear them, he'll look gorgeous!:)
honestly, you dont need to pay for them, I'll be more glad of getting the storage space back. I live near Kelham island, but could meet in town if thats easier
gina2007 09-01-2008, 19:00 I know that with the seat thing, was a nightmare with my niece! We had the 15hr first flight, then a 5hr second flight. Then had to drive for around 3 hrs. My sister was disgusted with the airline, we had to pay £200 for my niece and she didn't even get a seat nor was she allocated 'meals' even though she was mainly just on breastmilk and baby rice! My niece was passed up and down the plane through the 6 of us,but it'd just be me and OH with baby. Think we'll consider it, but if we get the offer from in-laws/parents might have to take that up :hihi: I've pm'd you jen! x
gina2007 09-01-2008, 19:15 Jen your inbox is full! Can't reply til you empty it! :D

Ha ha, i opened my cosy toes the other day to find a nest of about eight pairs of socks, 3 spoons, given to baby to chew on in various coffee shops and lots of half chewed biscuits! Yuk
gina2007 09-01-2008, 19:24 Bless! My nieces footmuff gets like that. Sausage rolls, straws, bus tickets..the lot! :D
At least your putting shoes on your kid, some don't bother and it makes me really mad
SOrry - disagree.. But agree with Baby Chicken ( which is getting to be a habit) that there is no need for babies to wear shoes.
Obviously they should be wrapped up cosy and warm but shoes on little feet are not necessary until they are walking. Could harm development if worn frequently. Though we did have some beautiful soft Daisy Root shoes for special occasions.
monstermummy 09-01-2008, 19:36 Ds had lovely Inch Blue shoes, very soft leather, not restricting the feet at all.
Jen your inbox is full! Can't reply til you empty it! :D
you should be able to pm me now:)
gina2007 09-01-2008, 19:43 He'll not be wearing the shoes hardly. Just to show people really :hihi: Bit like the "I'm a boy" bodysuit i've bought..because it'll look cute! And the teletubbies vest :hihi:
Sent you a PM jen :)

littleblue 09-01-2008, 20:06 I saw a baby in town today with a little ski suit on and no socks or shoes - it was a tiny little baby and its mother had gloves and all sorts on. Poor little mite :(
Anyhow, I when I saw it I thought of you lot. I think this is one situation where socks might have been a good start (The romper suit had elasticated cuffs so I would have imagined that socks would have stayed on..)
Hi,
Don't worry about what other people think if you like them. As long as they are soft & suitable for a newborn. DD1 never wore pram shoes but for some reason dd2 always used to lose her socks so wore them from an early age.
It is fun dressing your l/o's in lovely outfits. Even now I love buying my older girls clothes.
gina2007 09-01-2008, 20:28 Jen could you PM me your number again..just deleted my PM's like an idiot without taking note of it!!
I think, little feet should be kept warm. Not with shoes all the time, just every now and again :)
Skippy06 09-01-2008, 22:27 Okay. Random thing...
I've bidded on some little trainers on eBay for BabyCharlie. If I put them on him, will I look like a typical 'Chav teenage $!@g..' mother whos on benefits blah blah and the rest...?

Emma had 3 pairs of trainer from day 1. Sod what anyone else thinks I think the very nice and will keep lo feet nice and warm.
gina2007 09-01-2008, 22:41 Thanks skippy. I really want him to have a range of shoes..whilst they're still £3 a go and not £90 :hihi: That way he can find the best suitable to him for the next however many years, wether it be trainers, shoes, sandles etc and I can just buy him them ones instead of many pairs at £90 a go :hihi: <---I'm tierd and rambling now!!!
