Flying Duck 08-01-2008, 18:51 There's one in Castleton. Can't remember what it's called, but it's on the main street. fyy123 08-01-2008, 19:00 There's one in Castleton. Can't remember what it's called, but it's on the main street. I often go in there to see if there's anything new that interests me, it's only down the road and here's the link http://www.hawkridge.co.uk/index.php Eater Sundae 08-01-2008, 20:45 Porter Books on Sharrow Vale road buys, I think, but the shop is not all that big and you'd have to have pretty good stuff to attract his attention Is this the one near to the Hunters Bar end, close to the school? I used to go there. Then I read it was shutting, so I've never been back. I assumed it wasn't there any more. OP, Have you tried Rare & Racy, near the top of Division Street/Devonshire Street - Assuming they're still there, I've not been there for a while. They used to have a branch on South Road - again, I don't know if it's still there. Mathom 08-01-2008, 20:49 Anyone recommend a good second hand book store that also buys? I'd recommend looking up their worth on there, too. Eater Sundae 08-01-2008, 20:52 Isn't there a reputable second-hand bookshop at the corner of Whitham Road/Moor Oaks Road, Broomhill? Its Richer Sounds there now, and has been for years, I'd say 10, probably 15 years at least, maybe even longer. CHAIRBOY 08-01-2008, 20:55 Its Richer Sounds there now, and has been for years, I'd say 10, probably 15 years at least, maybe even longer. Sorry, I'll go back to the Ark! christait 08-01-2008, 22:40 Thanks for the recommendations. They are not the sort of books that would go on ebay. Found one place but a treck to newcastle involved. Rare and Racy and Ports sound good bets for a starting point. Thanks all! metalman 09-01-2008, 09:02 If you're thinking of going that far, Barter Books at Alnwick would also be a good bet. What sort of things are we talking about - if we knew that we might have a better chance of pointing you in the right direction. christait 09-01-2008, 09:20 Yep been to Barter books too and what an excellent book store that is! Best use of a train station if you ask me. Some are 1st editions of Kipling which could go on ebay but had a few bad experiances with ebay. The others are 16th / 17th century historical texts that need to go to specialists. These wont hit the second hand book stores but need a more specialist shop. I dont mind travelling for the rare book stores but also being a lover of books myself wondered if there is anything decent close by. nick2 09-01-2008, 09:54 There is a good second hand book shop at the top of Devonshire Green, they sell some good paintings/prints etc. too. metalman 09-01-2008, 11:04 Yep been to Barter books too and what an excellent book store that is! Other places you might think about are a couple in Holmfirth (I think it's Toll House books and Daisy Lane books), Scarthin Books at Cromford near Matlock, and one at Buxton whose name temporarily escapes me. Edit: Scrivener's books, that's it. metalman 09-01-2008, 11:09 Isn't there a reputable second-hand bookshop at the corner of Whitham Road/Moor Oaks Road, Broomhill? That used to be Alan Hill books. He went to Chesterfield for a while, then that shop closed down and he was supposed to have come back to somewhere on an industrial estate near Meersbrook, but I never managed to find out where. Anybody know? Shazine 09-01-2008, 11:13 Might be worthwhile contacting one of the auction houses for a valuation and they would possibly be able to sell them on a specialist sale. Try the one on Shalesmoor, sorry, can't remember the name. Mathom 09-01-2008, 11:26 In a word, no. Not really. Edit: Scrivener's books, that's it. The guy in Buxton - if it's the same one, a jampacked bookshop on a corner, several floors? - sells first editions of all kinds of stuff. He'd certainly sell Kipling and specialist historical texts - he had a first edition CS Lewis in last time I was there. Or if you fancy a trip to Oxford, Blackwells have a rare books section - with eye-watering prices... Also, Daerons books (who are really nice people) deal in Kipling: http://www.daerons.co.uk/ metalman 09-01-2008, 13:56 The guy in Buxton - if it's the same one, a jampacked bookshop on a corner, several floors? - sells first editions of all kinds of stuff. Lots of different people to talk to now and I'll just end up spending the money on more books. |
