They have always been a bloody rip off. The meters are not that much cheaper though, all part of the council's forcing people out of their cars policy and onto the even more expensive and useless bus service. ...... Well, forcing them to go to Meadowhall in cars! nuts77 07-01-2008, 15:26 you are quite right. from where i live would cost me £3-4 return to town and i would freeze to death in the process as they are so unreliable! cgksheff 07-01-2008, 15:27 Use the new Q-Park multistory on Broad Street, buy something from Castle Market and get over 2 hours for £2! hutch 07-01-2008, 15:27 The NCP off the Moor has the tariff at the top of the ramp in very small letters so that you are commited to going in. If the wife is not with me i park up London rd and walk in. Planner1 07-01-2008, 16:33 Lesson is don't use NCP car parks! They have always been a bloody rip off. Well, forcing them to go to Meadowhall in cars! Meters not much cheaper? One hour stay £1.45/hour, 2 hour stay £1.60 or £2 for 2 hours. Where is that "not much cheaper" than £6.70 for 2.5 hours???????? Sheffield on-street parking charges don't seem unreasonable compared to other similar sized cities. mr_busdriver 07-01-2008, 16:41 Meters not much cheaper? In my opinion, parking should be free. 00Soul 07-01-2008, 16:51 In my opinion, parking should be free. Too right. Absolute racket. And why do you have to put your reg in these days? If you were leaving a space which you'd paid for before the allotted time, you used to be able to pass on your ticket to someone else who may want to park to 'run out' the time. There is no justification whatsoever for expecting 'rent' x 2 for one parking space when it's already been paid for. Ncp, scc, whoever 'own' these car parks are robbers. End of story. smileyjiver 07-01-2008, 17:00 It's because they can get away with it and they know people will pay no matter what. The only way that car parking charges will go down if people didn't park in them but that isn't going to happen so NCP or whoever can charge whatever they like and people will still use them. Jabberwocky 07-01-2008, 17:06 I used to work for NCP and in recent years different companies have taken over the firm, sold off assets, made men redundant, upped the prices then buggered off to be replaced by yet another fly-by company who bleed it a little more. Once upon a time, the only people allowed to work there were ex forces personnel but they recently dropped that in favour of letting any cretin work there, the owners who originally invented NCP sold the lot off and then the fly by nights moved in. In short, you think its bad now...? Give it a couple of years and itll collapse entirely and the car parks will be sold off, demolished, and turned into bowling alleys or rough little patches of waste land with blokes charging a tenner an hour for the provelage of parking on flattened bricks and chunks of concrete. Heyesey 07-01-2008, 17:29 If you were leaving a space which you'd paid for before the allotted time, you used to be able to pass on your ticket to someone else who may want to park to 'run out' the time. Whch was illegal. Hence the introduction of reg entering, to prevent people from doing it. The only way that car parking charges will go down if people didn't park in them but that isn't going to happen so NCP or whoever can charge whatever they like and people will still use them. Exactly; it's simple economics. If people stopped using NCP's car parks they would face the choice of reducing their prices or going out of business. If people pay rip-off prices why should the company concerned reduce them? Would you? smileyjiver 07-01-2008, 17:47 In short, you think its bad now...? Or demolished to be turned into apartments - isn't that what is happening with any spare land in Sheffield and elsewhere these days? Buildings are being demolished so that either studen accommodation or luxury apartments can be built? Jabberwocky 07-01-2008, 17:57 Another thing they seem to think works is, the raise the prices so less people use the car parks, so to make up the money they lost, they raise the prices which makes less people use the car parks so to make up for the money they lost they raise the pric--- you get my drift here, Im sure. smileyjiver 07-01-2008, 18:06 Another thing they seem to think works is, the raise the prices so less people use the car parks, so to make up the money they lost, they raise the prices which makes less people use the car parks so to make up for the money they lost they raise the pric--- you get my drift here, Im sure. A bit like bus fares eh? Ravenger 07-01-2008, 18:15 I used to park in the council pay and display car park at the bottom of the Moor. Then that was sold off for re-development. I started parking in another nearby pay and display car park, then that one was also sold off for development. I now shop at Meadowhall where I can get free parking, and it doesn't cost me over a tenner just to take my family shopping. Mathom 07-01-2008, 19:18 Can anyone with a blue badge tell me where you can park?! I was with me dad just after Christmas and I had to tell him I wasn't sure if there were any council car parks left at all (he used to use the one at Moorfoot or the one by Ponds Forge), and the meter parking was all chocka - so we went on a multistorey and I paid for his fee (ruddy almost £4 for 2 hours!). Can blue badge holders park free on NCPs? Some say yes but I can't see how as you wouldn't be able to get out of the unmanned barrier? Where are there any surface car parks left? And if it's all NCP isn't that a bit selfish on badge holders? Not all of them like parking on double yellows and so on. Stormy 07-01-2008, 19:19 If you can be arsed to walk a bit, the multi storey serving Riverside and Irvin Mitchell on Millsands (jsut down from Castle Markets area and the Crown Court) is good value, beast paying the NCP. John Lewis used to be cheap n' all not parked there in a while though Mathom 07-01-2008, 19:29 If you can be arsed to walk a bit, the multi storey serving Riverside and Irvin Mitchell on Millsands (jsut down from Castle Markets area and the Crown Court) is good value, beast paying the NCP. John Lewis used to be cheap n' all not parked there in a while though John Lewis? You'll wait an hour to even get into the thing. And then the spaces are so small you'll lose your mirrors when the next person has to squeeze into their car, thus it's not so much of a saving! ;) JayneRay 07-01-2008, 19:32 I believe if the car parks and on road parking is owned by the council it is free most places have a sign telling you whether it is or not. molar 07-01-2008, 19:37 I believe if the car parks and on road parking is owned by the council it is not free most places have a sign telling you whether it is or not. So 'renting' a car parking space and passing on your ticket was illegal. I'd love to know how many were prosecuted for this heinus crime. This just serves to highlight what a penny pinching racket this was/is. :suspect: Paulmat 07-01-2008, 19:48 Just catch the bus. It's much cheaper and easier. £6 quid for 3 peoples all day ticket. No time limit to 2 hours or whatever and no having to find a car park/parking space etc. JayneRay 07-01-2008, 19:54 I think you missed a 'not' out. :) Or am I missing something? There are places in Sheffield where a blue badge holder is exempt from parking. mrsmills 07-01-2008, 20:44 So 'renting' a car parking space and passing on your ticket was illegal. I'd love to know how many were prosecuted for this heinus crime. This just serves to highlight what a penny pinching racket this was/is. :suspect: It is not criminal, it is a civil matter. When you pay to park on street you enter into a contract with the council to park your car. In consideration of you paying your money you have a licence to park YOUR car for the amount of time you have paid. It would be an implied term of this contract that you cannot assign the benefit of the contract to someone else, i.e. pass the ticket on. If you did so that would be a breach of contract and they could, in principle, sue you for the value of the ticket the next person would have purchased. cgksheff 07-01-2008, 20:47 There are places in Sheffield where a blue badge holder is exempt from parking. I don't think so. They seem to manage to get just about everywhere (whether legal or not)! honeyb35 07-01-2008, 20:52 I nearly died the other day after coming out of the panto which I took my daughter to see -£7.10 for about 3 hours parking!! AND the stupid layout meant I came out, got completely lost and was forced to play 'avoid the bus lane' for about 20 minutes grr. I don't drive into town if I can help it, I used to park in the little car park across from where the Travel Lodge is as it was free for blue badges, no idea where is convinient to park now, I hate parking on double yellow's in case I block someone, or get it wrong and get clamped argh. 00Soul 07-01-2008, 21:41 It is not criminal, it is a civil matter. So if I don't use my allotted time am I entitled to a rebate for paying for something I haven't used? If I buy a sandwich and decide to give it to a friend, does the sandwich shop ask me to throw it away and make my friend buy their own? I accept your explanation but however its worded the 'contract' is still an unjustified penny pinching racket. ragtag 07-01-2008, 21:49 Too right. Absolute racket. This is one of the slyest money making rackets I have ever seen and the council gets away with it by playing around with words and calling your ticket a licence. It makes my blood boil. tommo 07-01-2008, 21:59 The NCP carpark under the Park Inn ex Hotel Bristol is good value £1.70 for two hours and you can choose where to park. Since the IRR opened no one can find a way to get to it. Any advice please. barmyowls 07-01-2008, 23:44 i know a nice place in town where i park for free all day , but im not going to tell you lol *_ash_* 08-01-2008, 00:39 went into town the other day (don't usually go-usually go to meadowhall) parked in car park on campo lane (NCP) was there about 2 hours 30 minutes. cost £6.70!! in what world is that reasonable? I haven't read the rest of the thread fully, but this car park is (or was a hidden gem, depending on your outlook) If town is not busy, parking here is silly. If town is packed at the weekend/Christmas or whatever, this place is the nuts. In my experience, I've seen people queuing for ages to get in Coles Car Pk etc and all the cheaper ones. I have never ever seen this car park full. If like me, you dislike going to town and/or hate queuing or driving around looking for spaces. (and not really bothered about a few quid) go to this place. ;):) harris 09-01-2008, 13:07 For list of all car parks and on street parking and charges in the city centre this page on the council site is really useful http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/roads-and-transport/parking Classic Rock 09-01-2008, 13:13 Get an LPG dual fuel vehicle, get a parking permit from the council for a tenner a year and all your parking in Council car parks is free. I've saved a small fortune. MichaelJP 09-01-2008, 13:16 What annoys me is the way NCP charges a full hour for a part hour i.e. 61 minutes costs the same as 120 minutes. In my view that's unfair and should be illegal for all pay-on-exit car parks. Heyesey 09-01-2008, 13:21 What annoys me is the way NCP charges a full hour for a part hour i.e. 61 minutes costs the same as 120 minutes. In my view that's unfair Don't park there then. No time limit to 2 hours or whatever and no having to find a car park/parking space etc. hmm do they do this service from teversal to mansfield to sheffield? as 6 quid would save me £4 in petrol and £3.80 per day parking, although i would always end up next to the loon with the tick and the drool or the one that goes to sleep on ya.... plus i would miss out in the comfy leather seats and the real wood dash. the_rage 09-01-2008, 16:17 Have a nice wander in2 town......I park just out side take 5 mins 2 walk in and the cost.............FREE HotPhil 09-01-2008, 17:39 Have a nice wander in2 town......I park just out side take 5 mins 2 walk in and the cost.............FREE Not going to last long though - when the PPZ is finished you'll be stuck again. It does also have to be said that I can only think or perhaps two coucil run car parks in the city centre these days. I understand they had the use of various development sites, but they've all gone and no replacement. Any large development in the centre should be made to provide some public parking, but that'll never happen. As said earlier, the only way to stop these rip-offs is to not pay them. I rarely visit the city centre now as getting to/from it is such a nightmare. |
