We're just starting to put together our first fishtank, and while we've found a couple of places which sell fish (Pets at home, the little fish-shop in Heeley, the big reptile/fish place over towards Chesterfield), it'd be nice to have more of a choice!

Where else would people recommend - there's the place in Hillsborough on Langley Rd, which we'll try and visit: is there anywhere else worth trying?

If you ever venture that far South of Yorkshire, try Shirley Aquatics, just off the M42 about an hour south of you. Very, very large shop that sell everything you could ever imagine (kit, tanks, accessories, fish and other marine life!). Useful when your'e trying to get an isea of what works/what can be achieved, even in a small tank.

Yeah there is a new place up Handsworth which is spot on, its called 'Fish Inc' turn off the parkway at the asda, past the asda with the asda on your right, then turn left down the side of the first pub, then your second right then as you go along this little road there are some units on your right, just turn into them and you cant miss it. They dont sell much equipment but the fish are 100% some are even wild caught and a hell of alot cheaper than pets at home and the other places. The guy and his wife there are really helpful they will stand and chat to you all you want. I think the name of the road is Finchwell close. Also if you have lots of babies they will buy them from you. I have travelled most of south yorkshire and derbyshire but will prolly use them now unless I am looking for something they dont have.

Theres a pet shop in Chapeltown that has a lot of fish tanks, fish and so on. Can't remember the name of it. It's on the road that leads down to the roundabout from Hesley Wood.

Sorry, not much help really is it!

Hi if you look on www.svas.co.uk (Sheaf valley Aquarist Society) there is loads of info about all aspects of fish keeping, including shops and their stock, there is also a for sale and wanted section. Pop along and have a look. I would personally advise against Viscum as their standards leave a lot to be desired.

I would reccomend that you steer clear of Middletons at the bottom of the moor, we would often go to have a look in there and be put off by the amount of dead fish in the tanks, if you ever see a dead fish in a tank, dont get any of the fish from that tank, on the few occasions we have bought fish from there they have been dead within a few days...

My Dad uses a few places. SAS (http://www.sheffield-aquatic-supplies.co.uk/) at Heeley.

Wharf Aquatics (http://www.wharfaquatics.co.uk/) at Pinxton.

Two garden centre's round Matlock, which I don't know what they are called or where they are. One is a run down looking place on the main road from Matlock running towards Rowsley.

I recommend Pastures Farm at Coal Aston. Top quality fish and top quality service. Very knowledgeable help too. You're much less likely to see a sick fish there, and they won't sell any they suspect are not 100% fit.

Keep small children away from the killer whales (they call them koi carp, but I know a whale when I see one!) and do make time for the sturgeon - I love those! :)

I go to Aqua Hobby just up from the Sheaf View pub in Heeley...they're very friendly, very, very helpful, and willing to spend as much time as it takes talking to you and explaining things.
My son calls it the Shark Shop, and begs to go look at the sharks, lol.

The best place in sheffield by far is fish inc,the owners lyndsey and hazel are really friendly willing to spend time with you and lyndsey's knowledge of fish is far superior to anybodys i have ever spoke to in any aquatic shop, elm lane is also good so is the mill and derwent koi and tropicals in bamford. I would also recommend that anyone who keeps fish in the local area visit svas.co.uk where you will find lots of help and advice also check out freewebs.com/sazquatics

Thanks to all who posted the great comments about our tanks:)

ps please dont buy your fish from viscum the quality is terrible (only my opinion )

I must say I am quite excited about this Fish Inc shop - have never heard of it before, but have struggled to find somewhere to get decent fish from. The chaps at Sheffield Aquatics are nice enough but never have any interesting fish, and quality is a bit hit an miss in my experience.

Viscum was ok, but I wouldn't rave about it.

I have visited the Mill and was really impressed, they were quite pricey I thought but tanks were spotless and really good displays and range of fish. Most of the time its just a long way to drive though!
