View Full Version : Cheapest way to get train tickets from Sheffield Station.
troubledjoe 07-01-2008, 11:44 Hello all
I wondered if anybody can help me. Im travelling to london at the end of the month and staying over 1 night. I've been told that if i get tickets now it will be far cheaper than if i get them on the day of travel.
All i wanted to know is do i physically go to the station, or will i be able to ring them. Do they have some form of offer on if you attend in person???
I know this may sound daft, but i never travel by train and dont really know the besy way to get cheap travel.
Cheers

troubledjoe 07-01-2008, 11:46 thanks for that
BasilRathbon 07-01-2008, 11:53 If cost is the overriding factor, try Megatrain's website. So long as you don;t mind when you travel you can get a £5 ticket each way.

troubledjoe 07-01-2008, 11:54 it's quoting 114 quid for 3 people.... is that reasonable??
troubledjoe 07-01-2008, 11:55 cheers Basil, but went on the coach a couple of years back, was'nt comfy to say the least.
sheff_minx 07-01-2008, 11:56 Sounds expensive... Have you tried getting 2 singles instead of returns? I booked tickets on Friday to go to London on the weekend of 19th and it's costing £22 return because I bought 2 singles. Did it through www.thetrainline.com
BasilRathbon 07-01-2008, 11:57 cheers Basil, but went on the coach a couple of years back, was'nt comfy to say the least.
Ah, but they do train tickets as well now. As far as I can tell, the company that runs Sheffield - London trains is now part of the Stagecoach empire, and Megatrain/ Megabus is Stagecoach's way of filling up the empty seats on their off peak trains and coaches.

just sent you a pm- the minimum fare is £7 one way, but it really depends on what time and day you want to travel on as well as how far in advance you book.
the east midland route stright to st pancras is the easiest, quickect and normally the cheapest route.

East Midlands Trains operate the service - www.eastmidlandstrains.co.uk or 08457 125678. Advance purchase deals are cheapest booked as single leg journeys for specific times, price varies according to demand (cheapest single £7, most expensive £81 in Standard class, First class options also available. Cheapest fares are at the quietest times like lunchtime or late evening.
Also some of the quiet trains have a carriage given over to Megatrain, Stagecoach's budget service, book those tickets at www.megatrain.com (note this also sells Megabus tickets too so be careful!)

114 quid each, or £114 in total?
if it's 114 total, that's only about £35 apiece! not too bad, really.
lyndsayx 07-01-2008, 12:25 have a look at single fares, me and my other half went to london for new years eve and it cost us £28 each (there and back) for first class! we booked about three weeks in advance using www.thetrainline.com, and that was full fare! :)

It makes no difference. You can ring up, call in, or use the internet to book; whatever cheap ticket is available, will be available from any of them. I use the net; my dad either rings up, or goes to the station to book his.
troubledjoe 07-01-2008, 14:31 thanks for everybodys response! i managed to get 3 return tix for 75 quid, in total! (thanks to Sophie).

troubledjoe 07-01-2008, 14:46 haha indeed x
happylady 07-01-2008, 17:03 Rather than booking a return ticket I've found it cheaper to book two singles.

Sheff_Jeff 08-01-2008, 10:17 Just had a look at that Megatrain thing. Just booked 2 tickets (St Pancras and back) for a total price of 6 quid plus booking fee. Which quite frankly is a steal.
kieran_grund 08-01-2008, 10:20 Don't go into the station:
Had a look on the net at work yesterday:
Burton- Northampton open return with Young Persons Discount = £13.25
Station price:
Burton- Northampton open return with Young Persons Discount = £21.75

Is the mega train website up?

Its all on the same megabus site. You can choose between bus or train or select both to compare.

The only downside is that the Megatrain carriage on the train is sealed off from all the others, you don't have access to refreshments or toilets and you usually have to sit next to a big guy from Parson Cross with body odour and flaky skin. Still, you pays your money and you takes your choice, eh?

I think you are lying to me Basil. I mean how could anyone from the cross....
a) afford the £6 fare and
b) be allowed through parson cross border control to get to the station?

Robbing Barstools:rant: I missed my coach back from Victoria Coach station catch a train from ST pancras thanks to the the Inept staff who couldn't speak a word off english i tried to find an english speaking worker there butthere wasn't one i couldn't find the platform i needed and it didn't help that it is the biggest coach station in the country by the time i did get there the Coach had Just set off Needless to say i was not amused i went Beserk to say the Least at the staff there they were useless.
Needless to say after all the messing about of trying to find my way around the London Underground i finally got to St Pancras only to be told it would cost me £50 i was livid What a bleeding rip off that was yet can get tickets for that price it's a bloody disgrace i was Robbed.
Paolo Coopio 16-01-2008, 23:48 Went to London on the train last week.
They sit all the cheap fare people in one carriage so it seems. We sat the entire journey on a packed carriage with a suitcase on my lap due to the amount of baggage in one carriage.
On the way home we realised that all the other carriages on the train were deserted and the one carriage we were in was rammed again.
