View Full Version : I need help setting up a home email server
mattfire 14-02-2005, 14:30 Hi,
I have a small home network. All the mail comes into my server. How do I read this mail from other computers on my network??
I have also heard that I can read mail from any computer with Internet access?
Me again,
I am running win XP. I get my mail through Ntlworld. The software I use to read mail on the main (server) computer is called (incredamail.) I call this computer the server because it has the Internet and network hub attached which feds a laptop and another computer. I have network points in every room so I can plug in the laptop anywhere. I would like to read my mail in the room that I plug the laptop into, so I don’t have to go to where the server is kept.
I was hoping that all I needed to do was point outlook on the laptop to the sever and share the files. I cannot find any way to do this.
I am only beginning to explore computers and would appreciate simple instruction.
Much more information needed....
What operating system is the server running?
What mail server are you using?
Does the server have an internet IP address or is it running on a private network address behind nat/proxy/etc? If its an internet IP address is it static? (Im assuming both the answers to this are yes and yes but some mail servers can pull mail from pop3 accounts so the fact you say the mail "comes into my server" doesnt clear it up one way or the other)
What operating system are the clients running and do they have a mail reader (ie: outlook, outlook express, etc) installed?
Do you have a domain and/or subdomain pointing at the aforementioned server? (ie: pop3.youdomainhere.com or mail.yourdomainhere.com)
Infact, from your post it isnt even clear if you ARE running a mail server??? Are you saying the mail gets delivered directly to a mail server on your network or are you saying you have a client running that downloads mail from another server?
Seconded.
More info deffinatley needed.
if you aren't sure what you're doing then you shouldn't be running a mail server.
Are you sure that it's secure and isn't currently offering people millions of pounds of money left behind by president mugabe in nigeria which can only be retrieved with your help in fearing of GOD i find you!

The only way I know of doing this is with Microsoft Exchange Server...
you are joking, that costs thousands.
Try mercury for a popular opensource option (or freeware for personal use anyway).
Or james if you fancy running a java implementation that you can modify as you like.
Exchange is out of the question anyway. It only runs on Win2K Adv Server/Datacenter or Win2k3 Servers and even then it needs to be a member of a domain (ie: it won't run on a standalone server) iirc.
Im not even sure you need an e-mail server. From what you describe you just want to download e-mails from NTLs mail server to your laptop? If so why don't you just stop downloading mail on your server and set up Outlook on the laptop to retrieve your mail. Job done.
If you are wanting copies of your mail on both computers you can usually set mail clients to leave a copy on the server for X days. The client will then only download mail which it doesnt have (ie: new mail) but will also leave copies of all the mail on the server for the other PC to pick up. I'd give you step by step instructions on how to set this up but I've never used Incredimail. Sorry. I would imagine it's possible though (it can be done using just outlook/express).
P.S Please don't alter your original post to reply to a follow up question. Just post a new reply. It makes the thread of conversation much easier to follow.
The easiest way is to use Outlook, although if you havent already got it then its not a cheap way. Then just change the data store on your second computer and laptop to be on the server. In the same place as your main account on the server. If required use different profiles. You can only access your mail from 1 PC at a time but its the simplest way of doing it.
That sounds confusing to me and I know what I am trying to say!!
There are some instructions on the web somewhere but I can find them at the minute.

You'll never be able to do what you're asking with incredimail (as it is a client, not a server).
On our Windows Lan we run 602LanSuite (http://software602.com/products/ls/) (which is free for up to 5 users) for an email/proxy/gateway and it integrates with AVG (paid and free versions).
It also has a built in web server (that can be bound to a specific - ie internal - IP address) which can be turned on or off.
Been using it for nearly 2 years now and it is very stable.
mattfire 14-02-2005, 20:02 Thanks to all of you for your advice,
The advice that seems most useful in from MARCH, It is a shame he has forgotten how to do it?
I have outlook on the laptop and all other computers, pointing outlook to files on the server seems impossible?
Thanks sccsux I have just been to their web site (looks good) but I bet I need to reset connections and passwords to NTL. The appeal of incredamail was that it transferred all my outlook files and accounts with one click.
matt, part of the problem here was the way you worded the question.
You aren't running a mail server it now seems.
You are running a mail client on your desktop pc (that you call your server).
You'd like to run a mail client on your laptop. I'm not sure whether that is to be in addition to the one on your desktop.
I presume you are using incredimail and not increamail. It looks attrocious going to it's website, and doesn't tell me if it's pop or imap based, but i'm going to assume pop.
The way pop works is that mail is downloaded from the server (the real one, run by NTL) by your client and stored on disk. With the default settings mail is deleted from the server when you download it.
If you install intellimail on your laptop and find the settings you can configure the desktop to
i) not delete downloaded mail
ii) mark mail as read when downloaded
iii) only download unread mail.
you can set the laptop to
i) download all mail (including read)
ii) delete mail when downloaded.
this will allow you to get the same mail on both machines.
As the laptop is acting as the master effectively, you have to ensure that you download often enough to stop your mailbox filling up (this is the mailbox hosted by NTL, it will have a size limit).
hope that helps.

this is exactly what I have been looking for.
Captain_Scarlet 15-02-2005, 10:03 If your client PC has the tinternet just fire up your mail program and it should work... If the soft is posh enough it should be able to connect through the server and retrieve the mail.
I have the exact same system, and I've had 0 settings to tinker as to mail :D

that would be imap or microsoft exchange at the back end then. The mail is actually stored on the server and only a copy is kept on any client pc that connects to it.
Most isps do not provide this functionality as they'd have to give people big inboxes.

You're welcome:)
The fact that it can integrate with AVG is an added bonus!
I forgot to mention, you have to register your FREE copy (though the process is free and simple) in order to receive an unlock key!

No, no, no, no, nooooo.....:D
You don't change anything with your ISP.
Go back to the 602Software website & have a read of/dl the manual, it is very simple to set up & use.
FTR ... My PC uses The Bat for emails, the GFs uses Thunderbird & the Kids uses the webmail facility of 602Lansuite - all mail is collected by LanSuite and forwarded to the relevant user (up to 5 free) when loggin in to webmail or via pop/imap client.
mattfire 15-02-2005, 17:55 Sorted it!! ish
In accounts in put in the pop and smtp my user name and password.
I do seem to get the same mail delivered to both computers but it is better than nothing.
I have been back to the 602LanSuite web site but could not find any information on how to setup the software to do what I wanted. I down loaded it and it looked complicated.

you do or don't get the same mail? If you do, surely that's what you wanted.
If you don't I already explained what options to change so that you do.
