Sooo I have an apple tree to plant soon, however there's a great debate as to whether to dig a round hole or a square hole for it. Apparently a round hole will just encourage the roots to run round and round... and a square hole will force the roots to go out at the corners...
So square or round?
My holes have always come out whatever they've wanted to come out as, which is invariably some form of abstract elliptical thing. Everything's always grown for me so I can't be that bad at it.
Hmm that's what I thought... so why are people so insistent on square ones... what am I missing?
having never thought about the shape to prepare when planting my apple trees in November and my plum tree in December, I seem to remember just 'digging a hole' which must have been roughly round shaped, but then again I dug it with my spade, so perhaps it was more square ... something else to fret about :hihi:
