All I know is that it looks pretty on google earth (apart from the big factory near the train station) and its near barnsley.....
How long does it take to commute to sheffield in the morning too?

Depends on what you want, your decision sounds simliar to what Londoners face.
Small flat near work and no commute, or nice village/nice house but commute everyday.
I'd check out if there is a train into the city every morning. I personally wouldn't fancy the drive everyday at rush hour with the problems at Oughtibridge and near the Crown at Grenoside/High Green, which don't look like being sorted soon. So the train could sway your decision.
Or whether you want a family, or have one....

I live close to there and find it a really nice place, you could pick a worse area to live in.
Red Head 07-01-2008, 11:04 Hi
We moved out here from Hunters Bar when I was pregnant cause I didn't want to have a baby in the city.
We got a new house on one of the estates here and am very happy. :)The village is I think a typical one in that you will get to know a lot of people with little effort especially if you have kids. Its very friendly here and people will talk to you in the shops and parks etc. The train runs to barnsley, meadowhall, Sheffield and Huddersfield. Its about 40 minutes to Sheffield I think.
The countryside is lovely out here too - lots of local lovely walks especially round the reservoirs.
The village at the moment has a small co-op shop but controversially it is soon to have a large tescos. :suspect: Its also has a market on once a week which is great and a Farmers Market on once a month which is fab.
The reason we chose this village is that it has all the wee things you need within walking distance - library, train station, shops, market, post office, cafes etc.
Anything specific you need to know, just ask.
Cheers

Tesco will be the death of the local shops, what a shame.
thanks red_head and blueandwhite, just wondered what the commute to sheffield is like? I will have to drive it, but my hubby can use the train.
Also, what are the local schools/nurserys like?
do you think paying £250k for a new 4bed semi is over priced?
bigsteve 07-01-2008, 16:24 ive moved 3 couples there 2 lesbian couples and 1 gay.
not saying its a thriving gay hotspot but.............

how did you manage to move 3 gay couples to penistone? did you bundle them in a van and just drive them up there?:o
missdizzy 07-01-2008, 16:49 Penistone is lovely!! I love to go there when I can. Thinking of moving there myself, but am a bit worried about the commute too- they do have a train station though so that would be great! Great little cinema, which even has an interval!
Go and have a look!

No, it's not overpriced, seeing as a "3" bed (ahem, 2 and a half bed, actually) new build terrace, with just enough room for one car and not enough room to even keep your hoover or ironing board was retailing at £200k at Viewpoint up Myrtle Rd!
Isn't Penistone Grammar supposed to be really good? Or is it private?
You can catch a 38 bus to there too - they go every half an hour from the Interchange, but I don't know how long they take as they go through Fir Vale and so on first.
Conisbrough is also worth a look by the way.
Jabberwocky 07-01-2008, 19:32 I used to drive through Penistone almost daily and its a simple drive to and from Sheffield. We used to to go the summer fete there each year and shopping around the town each week and the people are fine, although I hear they can take a while to get used to new people joining their community, but thats the same all over the place isnt it?
Have a look here
http://www.penistone.uk.com/
might be some useful info.
Went to school there many years ago - in those days I'd have said a good place to establish a thriving thermal underwear business - but we don't get winters like we used to.

Been having a look at the website. I think it looks lovely. we're going on sunday to have a look at the new properties and we're having our flat valued tomorrow for a possible part exchange.
Do properties sell quite well up in penistone? Just wondered in case we decide to move again in 5 years or so?
Red Head 08-01-2008, 10:47 Houses sell really quickly round here......
the schools are supposed to be good - certainly the new Springvale Primary is fantastic, just build these last six months.
BasilRathbon 08-01-2008, 10:56 The only problem with the train service is the time it takes - it's about 40 minutes to Sheffield and as the line as far as Barnsley is single track, there's often delays if your train has to wait for a late one coming the other way.
If only the Woodhead line was still open, you'd be able to get by train from Penistone to Sheffield in 15 minutes, as you could nearly 40 years ago. (http://www.leytransport.i12.com/sheftt.htm) Still, that's progress........
hennypenny 08-01-2008, 11:00 Have you thought of renting there for 6 months before buying so that you can find out if the commute is viable and if you can settle?
I know someone who moved out there, but found the commute far too much so moved back within a few months.
stephenr 08-01-2008, 13:53 The 29 bus to Sheffield takes 44mins normally with it being an 1hr in the peak period to the interchange. Less if you live in the Spring Vale area and cheaper than the train.
The train has improved in recent years though.

well thats not an option i'm afraid, we need to sell our property to enable us to move, our mostgage is over £1000 a month so we culnd't afford to rent as well as keep our flat. and our flat just isn't selling in the current market, which is why we're consider this part exchange. I wouldnt really consider living in penistone if it wasn't for this.
also, doe anyone know where the enarest hospital is to penistone?
I'd guess its Barnsley Hospital. Pensitone will be about 7 - 8 miles from Barnsley town centre and come under Barnsley Council etc.
fox20thc 09-01-2008, 13:06 take a look here http://www.visitpenistone.co.uk/
well we went up today to have a look at the new housing estate.
I always swore blind that I'd never live in a boxy new build, but to be honest, you do get a LOT of property for your money and the layout is fantastic. The things which put us off though is that its a fair distance out, we're not familiar with penistone, there's a factory right next to the new estate and the new estate itself looks a bit like boxy dolls houses. But for the same money if we wanted to live in totley we'd get a tiny 3bed semi......
I still just cannot make up my mind......

me and my wife moved up here from Hillsbrough 3 years ago, at first we were concerned about the commute to work, im field based anyway so it doesn't matter were i live but my wife works on Bramhall Lane and commutes every day, when she leaves work, once she is of penistone road it only takes another 10-15 mins to get up here. Its a lovely place and you will get use to the commute
