Very quick to dish out the cane, and I've never met another games teacher who hated football as much as he did. It was ALWAYS cricket. Even in the winter in the gym it was "Forward Defensive Stroke" over and over again. Also he wouldn't allow us to wear pants under our shorts, the perv. When I left in 1968 some of the lads gave him a leaving present, they managed to accidently push him, fully clothed, into the swimming pool which had just been finished but was not officially open yet. I thought, thank God I won't be seeing him anymore.....WRONG I joined BT in 1968 (GPO Telephones as it was then) and they sent the apprentices to Granville College on a Block Release course (its like school, you go every day). Guess who we had for games ??? Yes, the perv himself. Fifty percent of our class were BT and the other fifty percent from British Steel. There were some big lads amongst them but I warned them about Bill. I told them what he had done to me and others at Hurlfield, they said WE will sort him out. The college had its playing fields up near Long Line at Dore and we used to be bussed up, while perv went in his car. He would send us cross- country running, all the way up Long Line, then right along the top road and down through the woods. He would sit on his ass, then meet us near where the path ran at the side of the lake, saying "Come on hurry up" etc. when we were knackered and it really got up people's noses. The Steel lads came up with a plan to sort him once and for all. Six of them used to run together in 2 banks of 3. When they got near the lake it had to be 3 banks of 2 'cos there wasn't much room on the path or someone might slip down the bank and into the lake. They talked Bill into running with them this particular day, and got him nicely positioned on the outside just before the swing left towards the lake....... Guess who ran out of room, down the bank and into the lake ???? Have you ever seen such a sight when a totally unfit games teacher in one of those tracksuits that absorb persperation (and awfully lots of water if you get them wet) staggers up the bankside and tries to make it back to his car looking like he's pooed himself and everybody is creased up laughing at him. When we got back to college, Bill tried to get those involved suspended, but as they pointed out no-one had pushed him, it was his own fault that he fell in the lake. He shouted out, "I'll get you, you Bs", and was heard by the Principle. HE got suspended and later left in a huff. So it is true that good things come to those who wait. PhilipB 11-08-2005, 20:56 Was at Hurlfield from 61 to 66. Teachers? Physics Chemistry, Pete Jennings Maths , Jack Crawshaw Geography, Stuart Greenhough Scripture, Taffy Morgan English, Peter Davies (think) Tech Drawing, Brian Big Arse Standing PE, Bill Machin Woodwork, Cliff Thornton Head was Len Egerton, great guy Deputy used to be a guy called Lipton, about 7 foot tall, he left and replaced by Houdmont. Agree with davep about Bill Machin. He was so unfit he couldn't even walk fast, totally addicted to making your life miserable. Well remember the Forward Defensive crap, that and a loudly shouting, "Change Offffffffff" Who else was in your class Alan 52? davep 11-08-2005, 21:12 Do any of you remember Paul Worrall. He was in my class and became Head Boy. It wasn't surprising as his father was Alderman Worrall, the Lord Mayor at the time. Now I'm not saying that there was favouritism, but......... Remember the name but can't put a face to it but do recall a lot being made of his dad being Lord Mayor. davep 11-08-2005, 22:11 When I was there it was a boys only school, and we were not allowed to fratenize with the girls under pain of death. There were a couple of girls who used to come over and hang about outside the chippy, but with 2 girls and 600 boys all trying to get off with them it was absolute chaos at lunchtime. How I envied my mates at home who nearly all went to the mixed Gleadless Valley. Why my parents opted for Hurlfield I'll never know. Girls were just things you ogled at from afar, like the fence at the far end of the playing fields. davep 12-08-2005, 10:34 Doesn't time fly. My granson has just left the school, now called Myrtle Springs, this summer. I passed it the other day and it still looks surprisingly familiar. The older part still looks like a large ocean-going ship. I would imagine most if not all of the teachers we had will have passed away by now, shame really as they were a good bunch, with one glaring exception already mentioned. Once they had knocked the raw edged egos of the latest intake from Arbourthorne Central, they managed to teach us a lot in a short time. Wouldn't have missed it for the world. PS Have edited this with the correct name of Myrtle Springs. How I came up with the name Ashleigh I'll never know. PhilipB 13-08-2005, 14:06 Left Sheffield many years ago and was driving past on a visit. There was a jumble sale on so thought "what the hell", went inside and the current Head was there. Forget his name but a really pleasant guy and he showed me and wife round, literally brought a lump to my throat. Was more than a bit run down. He reckoned it would probably be demolished in about 5 years. Some things obviously hadn't changed, gym still smelt the same!! The hall for assembly, Bill Machin ALWAYS stood in the left hand corner and wouldn't sing a word of any hymn. Presume he a Catholic or something. The office block where Lenny Egerton had his office just looked like a bombsite. Remember the secretary in the 60's? Old girl with her hair in a bun, we used to call her Ellie May from the Beverly Hillbillies! Anyone remember her name? davep 16-08-2005, 19:50 Don't think Bill Machin was a catholic, more likely a warlock ! Alan52 17-08-2005, 11:40 Originally posted by PhilipB Was at Hurlfield from 61 to 66. Remember Gordon Elliot, he had an older brither and think they lived on Skye Edge Ave also recall David Briggs. Mr Holding, think he did tech drawing before Brian Standing. Remember the first coloured boy. Don't recall his name but he was universally called No.1. Did anyone else do the cigarette run for Mr Egerton? He used to give you the money for 20 Embassy and then tell you to keep the change, all 2d of it. Cob and chips. Does that ring any bells? davep 18-08-2005, 21:33 DING !!!! 2 of you would get one, get it cut in half. Then eat the bread out of the middle, and get it filled with chips. The chip shop is still there in the same position. Bet they don't do them these days. patchalan 19-08-2005, 20:10 HI ALAN 52 You know me better as Patch or Alan Nelson, i lived on Fellbrigg Road, just up the road from Malcolm Stevens.Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but your friend and mine Cliff Poxon died earlier this year, i hear it was asbestos related, he was a big softy at heart. we had some good times when we were younger. At one time he worked for Trev Whisker, who lived just up the road from you ,on the otherside. I mainly knocked about with John Hodson, Gordon Campbell, kieth Wales, Trev Clements, Mick Donohoe, and Cliff. you were a year younger if i remember rightly. We all went to Arbourthorne C . Before moving up to Hurlfield, how things have changed, i was proud to go to that school, i dont think there was a sporting trophy that was not won by one team or another, the cabinet in the foyer was always full. Even Wednesday had a good team then. Alan52 20-08-2005, 11:45 G.DAY ALAN JUST A FEW MOOR NAMES FOR YOU TO SEE IF YOU REMEMBER THEM IF YOU LIVED ON FELLBRIGG RD YOU MUST KNOW PETER ACASTER,PETER HORTON AND TOMMY DISKIN.DO YOU ALSO REMEMBER A BOY CALLED WIGFALL FIRST NAME FAILS ME BUT HE WAS GOOD AT ALL SPORTS AND HERE IS ANOTHER ONE JIMMY GUMMIMG.WHERE IN THE WORLD ARE YOU NOW AND WHAT ARE YOU DOING FOR A LIVING .I ALSO KEEP AN EYE ON THE FOOTBALL UNITED AND WEDNESDAY.THANKS FOR THE LOOK IN ALAN davep 20-08-2005, 17:28 Alan52 For your information its another Sheffield double on the footy. Owls lose 2-1 at Ipswich, Blades win 2-1 v Preston. So you see, nothing ever changes!!!!! PhilipB 21-08-2005, 18:53 davep, here's another one for you. Remember the ice cream van that used to be at the gates during dinner times? Old bloke always wore a brown overall. He used to sell a blackcurrant flavoured lollipop, remember what we used to call it? davep 21-08-2005, 22:35 Will have to pass on that one, don't remember an ice cream van for some reason. I do remember the 101/102/105 buses passed the school, occasionally I caught one down to Daresbury Road but usually I walked it, 'cos, living on the Valley, I would go down as far as Arbourthorne Road, then head leftish towards a block of maisonettes that overlooked the whole of Gleadless Valley, and down through the woods at the side. Nowadays, when you see all these kids being taken to school in the 4 by 4 , it's no wonder they get obiese . God, I used to walk it there and back (and sometimes go home for dinner). They don't know they're born these days !!! Anyone being brought in a car in my day would have been bullied unmercifully as being a mamby-pamby. How times change. PhilipB 22-08-2005, 21:57 Totally agree davep, only once did my dad have to give me a lift to school and then I made sure he dropped me off way down East Bank Road. Used to live on Duke St, get the bus to Manor Top then walk it from there. Plenty of smoke a couple of fags, Woodbines of course, Players if you were flush. You ever go in the snooker hall underneath the picture house? By the way, the old fella used to call his ice lollies "belly button shifters" probably a bit of a perve. davep 23-08-2005, 20:30 Didn't go to that one, but did sometimes go to one down Heeley bottom somewhere with my cousin who lived up towards Woodseats. Sandy_L 02-09-2005, 01:39 I went to Hurlfied 1971 - 1976 wasn't all boys then (cos I wouldn't have been able to go lol) but greenhough was there then. Keanaz 20-09-2005, 19:06 Cor reading that lot bought some memories back we were bussed up from Darnall to Hurlfied and used to fight the boys fm Ashleigh and shag the girls (oops) I remember hougmont and Meg Jepson, creeber rings a bell as well (I was there 71 - 77) going down for a cob and chips at lunch, had my first pint in a pub just off the back of them shops, T'Rex - Marc Bolan visited there and he threw a scarf and I caught it and gave to a blond girl Kay ....... The youth club was the best part of the school apart from the creep that ran it. Had plenty of stand ups round the back! When it rained we used to sneak into Jepsons drama room and chase 2 girls with big tits She caught us once and was furios, got the cane of MRs Henderson. I also remember an art teacher who smashed a brick over a kid for talking in his lesson, we tried to strike and got the cane again. Oh what memories davep 20-09-2005, 20:56 The pub you mentioned, was that a Radio Hallam outside broadcast from the roof ? I remember them doing several from there in the 70's. I think they stopped them when somebody either fell or nearly fell off the roof. Keanaz 21-09-2005, 10:16 I dont recall the name of the pub, but I got my first pint at about 13 or 14 in half a school uniform, it was binned because the older ones protested so much. Another pub I got served in was the Fellbrig just off the norfolk park estate. which was amazing coz I was quite small compared to all my mates I knocked around with, 1 of them still lives in Sheffield and visits me on a regular basis (down south). Sandy_L 07-10-2005, 20:17 The Pub where Marc Bolan was on the roof was the Arbourthorne. I was there too from Hurlfield School. 1971 - 1976 Keanaz 08-10-2005, 09:56 So Sandy youve said a lot of things about Darnall and Hurlfield you must know me or my brothers or sisters? check out some of the other topics fm my sis Exhatter or my bro Singledad1 ? bluevan 12-11-2009, 22:51 Hi just found this thread by chance, My dad was Clifford poxon, unfortunately he did pass away in 2004, he was just 53, after 2 yrs battling cancer, he was a big man and brave to the end , he never moaned or complained he just got on with it, I was wondering if anyone remembered him from school and had any stories they would share , I would love to hear what he was like when he was little, ( was he ever little?) lol Thanks Kathy RIP Clifford Poxon 6/7/04 |
